WEEKLY WORD No. 5

18.05.20 Dear Parents/Carers and Students We love hearing how our students are doing, please keep sending in your updates to Miss Halliday by email to [email protected]. Stay home and stay safe.

FROM MRS LORD Hi everyone! I hope you are all staying safe and well, and coping with lockdown as best you can. I’m very lucky to have had lots of contact with people through my role, but I am still missing ‘normal’ school life and I can’t wait to be able to see everyone properly again. Although I’ve been busy working, I have been trying to keep myself mentally and physically on form. I’ve been on lots of dog walks (sometimes the cat comes too, which is very amusing), taken part in some charity events and have discovered I’m quite good at virtual quizzes. I hope you are looking after yourselves and your families. Don’t forget that you are all part of the family and we’re only an email or a phone call away if you need us. Keep sending us photos, videos and messages, they cheer all us teachers up! Take care, bye for now Mrs Lord [email protected]

FROM MRS BUTLER Hello 11A (A for Awesome) I hope you're all staying home, staying safe and in good health! I've been using the last few weeks of my maternity leave to spend quality time with my boys. We've done lots of crafting, baking (and eating) and walking in this lovely sunshine we've been having - I hope you've all managed to get outside too. I'm so sorry that I never managed to come in to say goodbye. I was so looking forward to spending a few mornings with my school babies before you went on exam leave. How things have changed. I wish you so much love and luck for the future. When I last saw you in Year 10, I was so proud of how hard you were all working on your GCSEs and what fantastic individuals you had all become. Keep on being your wonderful selves. Best wishes, Mrs Butler (and Arthur and Jonah too!) [email protected] FROM MISS HANSOM To all our students. A huge well done for how you have been getting on working from home! You are superstars. Keep going, the work you are submitting on Doddle is showing us how well you are understanding each assignment and what we can work on when we return to school. We know that learning from home can be a challenge so every time you log on to Doddle or open an exercise book, you are showing incredible resilience. We are SO PROUD OF YOU! All of the work you are doing is being checked by your teachers and I can now tell you that, since we launched Doddle, 33000 individual student assignments have been submitted! That is incredible! Year 10 currently have the most students logging in and completing assignments, so if you have not logged in, do it now or get in touch if you need some help. To our parents and carers. Thank you for your support during these difficult times. Nearly 400 of you have created parent accounts on Doddle to check in on the work that is being set and completed. If you would like guidance on how to do this please read the information here https://www.doddlelearn.co.uk/support/parent/ and contact us if you do not have your unique parent key. This is not how I expected to spend my first year at Honley High School, but I’m so grateful to be part of our school community at this time. Stay safe and keep in touch. Miss Hansom [email protected]

YEAR 11 FROM MR CLARKE Good morning everyone - I hope that you are all keeping safe and well. Welcome to what would have been your last proper day at Honley before starting your GCSE exams next week. I feel heartbroken for you that your time at school got curtailed in the abrupt way that it did and that you will not get the chance to show us in your exams just how good you really are. It has been my pleasure working with your year group for the last two years and I have loved watching you all grow as people despite all the tears and tantrums. I have spent the last 7 weeks spending time with my dog Sherlock and growing a big bushy beard. Alongside that, I have been working hard with your teachers and the heads of department to try and ensure that you are awarded the grades you deserve this summer. This has been a long and very difficult process - probably the hardest thing I’ve had to do in 20 years of being a teacher. If it was up to me it would be top grades for everyone but sadly that isn’t allowed. GCSE results day is still scheduled for Thursday 20 August and when we know more about social distancing we will let you know how the day will run. We are still committed to hosting a prom for you all although it is looking very unlikely this will happen as planned in June. When we have more details we will be in touch. Try to make the most of the time you have now to prepare for whatever it is you are going to be doing in September. Look after yourselves and if there is anything you need from myself, Mr Meads or your Form Tutors, we are only an email away. Take care Mr Clarke x [email protected]

***AMAZING STUDENTS*** Our students haven’t stopped surprising us with their many, skills, talents, interests and enthusiasm. Keep sending in updates to Miss Halliday by email to [email protected] or via our Facebook page.

MRS ACKROYD’S LOCKDOWN RECOMMENDED READS The Dog Who saved the World by Ross Welford #thedogwhosavedtheworld #HHSRecommendedRead A chance meeting with a retired scientist leads best friends Georgie and Ramzy to the chance of a life time - being the first people to time travel into the future! Then when a deadly virus infects all the dogs in the world and threatens all of humanity the ability to time travel becomes more than just a game. This book has it all: time travel, high tech virtual reality gaming, science, blended families, friendship and a race against time to save humanity (and dogs), all wrapped up in this heart- warming intelligent adventure story. https://www.rosswelford.com/books/dog-saved-world/

Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy #Skulduggerypleasant #HHSRecommendedRead This is the thirteenth title in the Skulduggery Pleasant series and it doesn’t disappoint. There’s a lot going on in this book with a war, a heist, a zombie apocalypse and a Presidential election taking place you don’t have much time to catch your breath. But it’s all delivered in the usual Skulduggery style with plenty of action and humour. Don’t get me wrong, Seasons of War is also dark, gritty and at times terrifying, but it is immensely enjoyable. It’s a great read full of wit, magic, adventure and sarcasm. https://www.skulduggerypleasant.co.uk/book/seasons-of-war/

As seen on Netflix: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han #Jennyhan #Toalltheboysivelovedbefore #HHSRecommendedRead Lara Jean has never openly admitted the crushes she’s had. Instead she wrote each one a letter, pouring out her heart and soul, detailing all the things that made her fall out of love with them, knowing they would never be read. Then one day they are gone, her secret letters aren’t so secret anymore... Lara Jean finds herself in a position she never dreamed of; having to face her fears and express how she really feels. A lot of drama but girly goodness with an interesting take on the usual teen romances. https://www.jennyhan.com/books

The Alchemyst – The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott @flamelauthor #thealchemyst #HHSRecommendedRead Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on 28 September 1330. Nearly seven hundred years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life. The records show that he died in 1418. But his tomb is empty and Nicholas Flamel lives. If you enjoy fantasy and magical stories you will enjoy this. The action starts on the first page and rattles along at a good pace throughout. There’s plenty of history and mythology blended into the story and enough plot twists to keep you guessing to the end. https://www.dillonscott.com/the-flamel-series.html

Eve of Man by Giovanna & Tom Fletcher #Eveofman #HHSRecommendedRead The story is told by Eve, the first girl to have been born in 50 years and Bram, one of the boys who “pilot” Holly, Eve’s hologram best friend. Being raised alone with just the “Mothers” and Holly for company Eve’s carefully constructed world is turned upside down when she meets Bram. Eve starts to question everything she has been taught to believe. Is her perfect home really her prison? Alternating between Eve and Bram’s point of view, this dystopian thriller (with a hint of romance) carries us on apace as Eve and Bram discover life isn’t what they thought it was. Teen 14+ https://www.giovannafletcher.com/books/eve-of-man FANTASTIC STAFF ALERT Our staff have loved seeing on the wonderful, creative and imaginative activities our students have been doing during this time. We thought you might like to see what some of them have also been up to. Mrs Green: ‘On an evening, I’ve been binge watching lots of Spanish series on Netflix and during the day my family and I have been loving nature! We bought some binoculars, a wild flower book, a nature book and some magnifying glasses. So far, we have discovered flowers we never knew the name of and some sort of pupae which we think will turn into a moth! I’ve also started baking (although I’ve been told this is not my forte  ) Missing you all and looking forward to seeing you all again  Mrs Baston: ‘I've become a tadpole owner! As part of the kids learning we have collected frogspawn so they can watch them develop! We now have about 1,000,000 tadpoles!’
