Cascio* Executive Overview Wal-Mart’s emphasis on “Always low prices. Always” has made it the largest retail operation in history. However, this unrelenting mission has also created a way of doing business that draws substantial criticism regarding the company’s employment practices, relationships with suppliers, and the company’s impact on local economies. This paper focuses on a company that delivers low prices to consumers, but in a fundamentally different way than its competitor, Wal-Mart. That company is warehouse-retailer Costco. In the following sections we will begin by providing some background on the company, including its history, its business model, its ethical principles, core beliefs, and values. Walmart Targets Midpoint of Ethnicity Scale By Don Longo Walmart's Supercenter edged out Houston-based Fiesta Mart as the store where the highest percentage of Dallas-area Latinos buy most of their groceries. According to new research, the "Dallas/Fort Worth Latino Trendline Study, 2010," by Rincon & Associates, 25.4 percent of Dallas Latinos purchased most of their groceries from the Walmart Supercenter compared to 24.9 percent of metro area Hispanics that bought from Fiesta Mart, which operates 50 stores in the Dallas, Austin and Houston markets. An analysis of the results based on country of origin, though, shows that Walmart Supercenter (33.1 percent) and Walmart Neighborhood Market (14.5 percent) were more successful at attracting the U.S.-born Hispanic shopper, while Fiesta Mart was more successful with the foreign-born Latino shopper. "Walmart appears to have made a deliberate decision to be somewhere on the midpoint of the ethnicity scale," said Ed Rincon, president of the Dallas-based research and consulting firm. "They don't overdo it. [Its] Supercenter in Garland [Dallas suburb] attracts a good mix of African-American and White customers as well as Latinos." In the past two years, both Fiesta Mart and Walmart have expanded their stores in Latino neighborhoods. Fiesta Mart purchased existing Carnivals (Latino-themed stores formerly operated by locally based Minyards) and re-branded them as Fiesta Mart to reach into Latino neighborhoods. Walmart, on the other hand, added a new store with a Latino theme to appeal to Hispanic shoppers, according to the report. "The struggling economy has driven more people to price-conscious stores and Walmart's major advantage is pricing," said Rincon in an interview with Hispanic Retail 360 magazine. -

It's crunch time for gift buyers, the week when stores and websites see a surge in sales, and with it comes more potential for problems and frustrations. The multitude of ways to do holiday shopping—in stores, online, from a smartphone—poses new challenges for shoppers and stores. Whether it's faulty merchandise, the wrong price or shipping that is too slow, time-starved customers want a resolution and they want it fast. Luxury and mid-price department stores increasingly see customer service as their main attraction and the best way to draw in shoppers from discount stores and online sellers. "We spend a lot of time, money and energy attracting new customers," says Richard Baker, chief executive of Hudson's Bay Co. HBC.T - 1.60% , owner of Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor. "The last thing we want to do is, after all that work, lose a customer over a bad experience." That is why Andrea Robins spent several hours on a recent weekday hunting for a handbag. Ms. Robins is Saks's senior director of customer service, who solves problems that escalate from any of the retailer's 113 full-price stores and outlets. A customer at a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Florida had bought a $1,850 Gucci bag to be shipped to her daughter in Washington state.
