The sets were excellent, almost identical. I thought the cast was well matched to the originals the Very Best Episodes: Volume 1 obviously they can't replace them. I was pleasantly surprised to find that each episode was very watchable and although it sometimes felt a bit rushed I did enjoy the episodes. So moving I also love the quietly strong way Mainwaring tells the U-Boat commander 'You can't win this war. My own favourite is 'Getting the Bird',because of the simply wonderful appearance of Wilson's daughter, and, most of all, because of the beautiful scene between him and Fraser, when Fraser promises to keep Wilson's secret. I live in America, where Dad's Army is sadly unknown, so I'm a brand new convert. I've been watching the series on DVD, starting from the beginning. Am about half-way through and enjoying it immensely! So far my favorite episode is Battle Dads Army the Giants probably because, being a Christmas special, it's 3 times as long as a regular episode. Also, any episode where Arthur Lowe or Clive Dunn Dads Army drunk is an instant favorite! Earlier this week, on the 27 th of Septembera tragedy hit us. David Croft, a Dads Army loved British comedy writer, died at the age of Yeatman Edward Sinclair and Mrs. Pike Janet Davies. This show is absolutely fantastic, it is pure perfection. Everyone is brilliant in their roles, the effects were great for the time, the stories were always fantastic, Hell, the make-up was awesome too! Well Clive Dunn was 33 when he was cast as Corporal Jones, who is All this time I thought he was the same age, I had always thought he was at least sixty. It was only a couple of years back that I realised that Dunn was actually one of the youngest actors there! Heck, if I could I would do a top 77 episodes the total number of episodes, minus the three missing episodesbut it would take too long. Knights of Madness. To celebrate St. It is decided that they will both share it, with the Home Guard performing first, then followed by the Wardens. The Wardens decide to show up the Home Guard by performing the fight between St. George and the dragon, but are mortified when the Home Guard do the exact same thing. With Mainwaring and Hodges playing the two St. Georges and the Home Guard and Warden dragons headed by Jones and the Vicar respectively, no-one expected that the two St. Georges would then fight each other! Not only that, but the two dragons also come to blows. That is the main aspect of this episode, the twist on the St. George and the dragon legend. It was very well done the whole fair scene was performed brilliantly by all members of cast, main or supporting. Of course the clash of the two groups overshadows the whole episode, that and Pike trying the Very Best Episodes: Volume 1 hide his embarrassment in his costume. Ring Dem Bells. Now this was a classic. This episode is great simply because of the platoon dressed in Nazi uniforms, especially when the public see them, thinking that they have been invaded! The initial feelings the platoon the Very Best Episodes: Volume 1 when they first put on the uniform was just faultless. However upon entering the room, they see that the three men literally jumped, and were now hanging on for dear life near the top of the tower. His role as Pike truly grew to great heights in this episode, showing the viewers how flexible and talented he can be. This episode is definitely one of the best. Put That Light Out! Fearing the Nazis will send spies across the channel, Mainwaring sends Jones, Godfrey, Pike and Frazer to man a lighthouse. Simple right? Of course not! They Dads Army turn the lighthouse on! They attempt to stop it and And now all of Walmington has been lit up like a Christmas tree. How can it get any worse? A German air raid of course! The episode is extremely tense; the Home Guard and the Wardens have to figure out how to turn off the lighthouse before the Luftwaffe arrive. It even shows how far Mainwaring will go before resorting to firing the Lewis gun at the lighthouse, something he had wanted to avoid as he may hit his own men. And then after all that, just as Mainwaring is about to pull the trigger, the light goes out, saving the town. It was a close call that made Mainwaring make the hardest decision he probably had to decide. It also shows how different, and yet how similar Mainwaring and Hodges are. Hodges demands that they shoot the lighthouse straight away whilst Mainwaring leaves it as a last resort, and both of them are doing what they feel is right for the good of Walmington-on-Sea. An episode that truly gets you hooked. Sons of the Sea. However in a test run they get lost and end up crossing the English Channel and drift into occupied France! His loyalty to his crew is shown greatly, and we can feel that he would die in order to protect them, which is why we love him. The problem? Things That Go Bump in the Night. In this episode alone he was forced to strip and change clothes three times. But despite that, it never got old. Eventually Captain Cadbury, the owner of the house, returns and explains that the house is a school, training dogs for the war effort. He allows Pike to wear a German uniform before the Very Best Episodes: Volume 1 them to the nearest settlement so that the platoon can get some fuel. Unfortunately the German uniform is used for training the dogs, and is covered in aniseed which is attracting the dogs, who will tear Pike the Very Best Episodes: Volume 1 anyone else who came into contact with him apart.

I think we can guarantee you a laugh a minute as we present three of the original TV episodes ‐ “Deadly Aachment”, “Mum’s Army” and “The Godiva Affair”. We’re delighted to have a few new faces on stage and we’re sure you’ll give them a warm welcome. As you will know we are in the early stages of our “Big Project” which will see the theatre upgraded and improved. We will be addressing issues of accessibility, health and safety and extending use of the theatre within the community. As a first step we have been busy fundraising to help towards the costs associated with our Project. These costs include emergency repairs to the roof (which we have now completed) and detailed architect’s drawings. There is more informaon available in our “Big Project” leaflet and if you join our mailing/email list we’d be very happy to keep you informed about progress. We are also currently in the early stages of looking at Community Ownership which would see the building come into the ownership of The Barony Players (we current‐ ly lease the building from Falkirk Council). Introduction "Military virtues such as aggression, strength, courage and endurance have repeatedly been defined as the natural and inherent qualities of manhood" and "the soldier has become the quintessential figure of masculinity" (Dawson 1994, 1; cf. Braun 1996, 180; Connell 2005, 73, 213). Despite the assertive tone of these statements, military masculinity is fraught with contradictions and paradoxes. Soldiering, especially the killing of people in combat, can be seen as morally ambiguous (Braun 1996, 180). More importantly, the ideal type of military masculinity can never be reached and is enmeshed in a "dense web of double binds" (Belkin 2012, 4), that is, in disciplinary rituals that address soldiers as "girls" or "poofs" or in exercises that infantilise and feminise them (Belkin 2012, 33). Since the abolishment of National Service in 1961, serving in the army has become a very specialised occupation for a minority of the population in Britain and the warrior hero has been superseded by figures such as the "entrepreneurial individual" (Connell 2005, 254). Visitors to the Hall, on a rather snowy Sunday afternoon, thought they had stepped back in time as they gazed on the fabulous scene of ladies and gentlemen in full court dress. Only the cameras of our intrepid film crew John and Margaret Morgan gave away the fact that this was a film set and they had not been transported in a time warp. With a full entourage of Director, Wardrobe, Wigs and Musical Director in attendance visitors to the Hall may have been forgiven for thinking that our Company members were a professional film crew. But unfortunately no one dared ask the stars for their autographs!!! The actors' banter in Plautus' time has changed little over the centuries. Asides to the audience continue to be used in Shakespeare. In 1938 Rogers and Hart used the Comedy of Errors as a basis for the musical The Boys from Syracuse. The asides to the audience as a theme was repeated in the popular Frankie Howard series Up Pompeii, UK of the 1970s. In comedy, the continuity of tradition and content is possibly clearer than in any other theatrical form since it can be demonstrated not only in terms of plot and literary influence, but also in theatrical practice. The Oxford dictionary defines comedy as a Stage Play of light, amusing and often satirical character, chiefly representing everyday life, with a happy ending. A great deal of stress can be laid on 'timing' - the ability to know how long an audience can be kept waiting. Add to this the actors' gift to a 'live audience' which can direct the audience to anticipate the funny side of any given situation with gestures, emphasis on certain words and pacing, and is under the control of the actors. It is here that you have a very important ingredient for success in a stage production.
