  • The New Morphology of European Film Festivals (Case Study: Transilvania
The 2017 WEI International Academic Conference Proceedings Barcelona, Spain THE NEW MORPHOLOGY OF EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVALS (CASE STUDY: TRANSILVANIA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL) lecturer Ileana Nicoleta Sălcudean Cinematography and Media Department Faculty of Theater and Television Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca Abstract: The international film festivals are nevertheless ”inherently linked to societal and cultural concerns” (Elsaesser 2005, 27). The new morphology of film festivals brings a new light on film festivals and the theory of culture, especially with the new reconfiguration of festivals Europe, the insertion of new technologies and new opportunities to create networks. The research approach is defined at the intersection of cultural studies, sociology of culture and cultural anthropology, seeking a new vocabulary of film culture in the new socio-political context. In terms of cultural studies I analyze the social and political context of creative industries (mainly film production); an important contribution of cultural studies and sociology of culture refers to the tension between citizenship and consumerism. From the point of view of cultural anthropology, I analyze the new film festival rendering the distinction space/ place; mapping/ tracking (Elsaesser, 2004, pp. 185-188) replacing universal/ particular; local/ global, following contemporary approaches of convergence and network as more efficient in the globalization context. European film festivals shift away from the stereotyped category of nation and auteur as connected to Europe towards the global economy and the city (Valck, 2007, p. 30). The case study of Transilvania International Film Festival is bringing forth questions regarding the Western European vs. Eastern European film festival models and how are the Eastern and Central European festivals incorporating the traits of the Western European film festival.

  • “The Process of Subtitling at Film Festivals: Death in Venice?”1
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 3 No. 14 [Special Issue - July 2013] “The Process of Subtitling at Film Festivals: Death in Venice?”1 Estel·la Oncins Centre for Ambient Intelligence and Accessibility of Catalonia Department of Translation and Interpreting Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Abstract Much has been written on subtitling films and TV content, but little is known about the process of subtitling for film festivals. Compared to ordinary films seen in the cinemas or on TV, in the case of film festivals technology has a higher impact on both the process and the display. This contribution presents a retrospective analysis of the subtitling practice at film festivals, data gathered from the Venice Film Festival - which is the oldest festival of its kind dating from 1932. Though the subtitling process may not be the same as in other film festivals, the underline principles remain the same. Keywords: Subtitling, Surtitling, Film Festivals, Multilingual Subtitling, Venice Film Festival 1. Introduction Until 1985 with the introduction of the electronic subtitling, the creative process of subtitles was difficult and costly, these surprised given the fact that its use was ephemeral: usually one or two showings. While, on the other hand the final product itself was used only for the festival2. After the film premiere at the festival, the print could not been further distributed in Italian, which has mainly a dubbing tradition. Furthermore, the elaboration process of the subtitles for a film festival presents three main particularities: timing, material available and medium of display. These features rarely have the same impact in other subtitling practices.

    * pb omslag Film Festivals 07-11-2007 15:19 Pagina 1 Film festivals are hugely popular events that attract lovers of cinema worldwide, but they are also a uniquely revealing index of globalization in the realm of culture MARIJKE DE VALK FILM FESTIVALS and the arts. Focusing on the world’s most famous fes- tivals – Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Rotterdam – Film FILM FILM Festivals: From European Geopolitics to Global Cinephilia tells the story of a phenomenon that began in the midst CULTURE CULTURE of geopolitical disputes in war-torn Europe. De Valck IN TRANSITION IN TRANSITION shows how festivals in Europe turned political divisions and national rivalry into advantages, eventually expanding into a successful global network. Taking into account the multilateral influences of major actors – such as Holly- wood, the avant-garde as well as political, regional and tourist agendas – the book proposes a comprehensively new understanding of film festivals. Issues addressed range from programming and festival prizes to national legimation and city marketing, from value addition and cinephilia to glamour and film markets. While acknow- ledging the achievements of the festival network, the book also asks questions about the future: does success depend on the promotion of filmmakers as “auteurs” and the regular discovery of “new waves,” or are festivals increasingly issue- and personality- driven? Film Festivals is a must-read for everyone interested in the state of the world’s film cultures, as they sustain themselves by a dynamic mix of cul- tural value, aesthetic innovation and socio-political relevance. Marijke de Valck is Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
