Japan International launches an international intern program

Japan Tobacco International (JTI), certified by the Top Employer Institute for the second year running as one of the companies with the best Human Resources practices in the country, has launched the global Make it Bright internship to attract Generation Z to the organization.

Earning an internship opportunity that places a youth in the job market is a dream for many students. And what if this opportunity took them to work for two months in Switzerland? This is the proposal of the global internship program Make it Bright, launched in March by Japan Tobacco International (JTI), with the aim of approximating Generation Z and providing a unique educational opportunity to talented youths.

The selection process kicks off in April and, to join in, students must be aged at least 18, fluent in English, in their final two years of university and will to present innovative projects. University students from all areas can sign up via the website www.makeitbright.com.

And the reward for being selected? Participating in the international intern program, with a 6-month duration, two of which will be spent at the JTI headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, two months at one of the 400 JTI offices around the world and the last two months working in one of our host communities.

To secure the position, participants will have to pair up and respond a business challenge. “The ten best ideas from Brazil will receive mentoring from JTI in order to develop and then be presented to a local jury that will select the duo to represent the country at the global final in Geneva. In the future, these ideas may be implemented by the company”, explains Mirian dos Santos Canto, from Talent Acquisition & Employer Branding for JTI in Brazil.

In total, there will be 25 pairs from around the world competing for the internship. Projects will be assessed by a jury formed of JTI employees, who will decide on the five finalist pairs. Lastly, the projects that reach the final will be presented to one of the company’s executive boards. During the internship, the selected students will be focusing on projects, learning about team work and developing competencies. Ms. dos Santos Canto comments that “the program is an opportunity for an experience in the real corporate world of a multinational, to acquire new skills and expertise, while also benefiting from an international internship in Switzerland”.

In the mind of Marjorie Tabacof, Talent Manager for JTI in Brazil, Make it Bright is an excellent opportunity to bring new generations closer. “Our idea is to bring Generation Z into the work market so that our employees are prepared to welcome them. It is a very particular generation, striving for a unique career plan, and it has a highly diverse market outlook. We want to work with this generation, bring it inside of JTI, as, in a few years, they will be future employees and managers. We want to build this bridge between the generations”, she added.
