A Review by Ally Lee, University of Warwick Martin O’Shaughnessy’s Laurent Cantet is the latest edition of—and the author’s second contribution to—the Manchester University Press French Film Directors series after the publication in 2000 of his study on the films of Jean Renoir. The series currently features an impressive forty volumes and this assessment of one of France’s most important active filmmakers is a welcome addition. Despite Cantet’s prominence, he has so far been the subject of relatively little scholarly investigation. Previously, only one monograph-length exploration of the director’s oeuvre, Yannick Lebtahi and Isabelle Rousel-Gillet’s stimulating and insightful Pour une méthode d’investigation du cinéma de Laurent Cantet, had been published.

  • Creating Culture Through Food, a Study of Traditional Argentine Foods
Unit Title: Creating Culture through Food: A Study of Traditional Argentine Foods Author: Kyra Brogden George Watts Magnet Montessori, Durham, NC Subject Area: Writing and Language, Social Studies Topic: Food and culture Grade Level: 1st, 2nd, 3rd (Lower Elementary) Time Frame: 4 days of 45-minute lessons on Argentine food, nutrition and culture Cooking: 3 days of cooking and 1 day to put together the cookbook *The cooking lessons will require more time and resources. Also the cookbook may require going through a rough draft and final copy that can occur after the lessons themselves are completed. That can be done at the teachers’ discretion. Brief Summary: This unit will focus on helping students understand the role of nutrition and food in defining a culture by studying Argentine nutrition and food. The first four lessons will focus on comparing nutritional guidelines, evaluating food, and a discussion about meal times in both the United States and Argentina. The students will then embark on a series of three lessons that each focus on a traditional Argentine food. The students will cook the food, create a nutritional analysis, learn about the history of that food, and then write food reviews. The students will ultimately make a cookbook with the recipes, pictures, nutritional analysis, and their own food review. Established Goals are taken from the Common Core Standards for Grade 2: Research to Build and Present Knowledge 7. Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g. read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations) 8.

WMC INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR ANALYSIS OF GENDER & OSCAR NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com @womensmediacntr WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonproft organization endeav- oring to raise the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media and thereby ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. Our publications include the book “Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language”; “The Women’s Media Center’s Media Guide to Gender Neutral Coverage of Women Candidates + Politicians”; “The Women’s Media Center Media Guide to Covering Reproductive Issues”; “WMC Media Watch: The Gender Gap in Coverage of Reproductive Issues”; “Writing Rape: How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault”; “WMC Investigation: 10-Year Review of Gender & Emmy Nominations”; and the Women’s Media Center’s annual WMC Status of Women in the U.S.

Synopsis (The story is set in Mexico between 1971 and 1974) Escaping from his country, Helmut Busch, a former informant for the secret police in East Germany, the Stasi, lands in Mexico under a false identity. His wish is to start a new life far from Europe and where he is less likely to be found. Nevertheless, he is immediately identified by the Mexican secret services lead by Díaz, who with the threat of sending him back to Germany as a deserter coerces him to work for him. Díaz, asks him to infiltrate a group of politically militant students. To achieve this objective, Helmut Busch adopts his new identity as Bruno Müller, a historian and visiting professor in the University of Mexico. He will deliver a series of conferences regarding Paris´May 68 student riots. Bruno´s mission is made difficult when a love affair with Adela, one of the members of the group, starts getting serious. Obliged by the situation and under severe pressure, Bruno does his job trying to maintain as far away from any compromising situation as possible in order to inform nothing important. However, things get complicated and Bruno´s conflict grows when he finds out that the young woman with whom he has fallen in love with is part of one of the politically militant groups that Díaz is interested in.
