Abstract The ammonite fannas of the Santiago Formation in the Subandean Zone (SE Ecuador, Early Jurassk, Sinemurian).- About fifty ammonites have been collected in five separate fossiliferous localities, These outcrops are scattered in the proxirnity of the Rio Santiago, between the villages of Santiago and Patuca (SE Ecuador). The fossiliferous beds beJong to the upper part of the Santiago Formation and can be attributed to the upper early and late Sinemurian.

  • First Record of the Tethyan Ammonite Genus Canavarites HYATT in the Lower Sinemurian of Germany, with Description of a New Species
Palaeodiversity 4: 17–21; Stuttgart 30 December 2011. 17 First record of the Tethyan ammonite genus Canavarites HYATT in the Lower Sinemurian of Germany, with description of a new species GÜNTER SCHWEIGERT, MARTIN KAPITZKE & DIETMAR SCHREIBER Abstract A single specimen of the Tethyan ammonite genus Canavarites is recorded from the Lower Sinemurian Arietenkalk Formation of south-western Germany. The specimen was found in a limestone bed in which Vermi- ceras scylla (REYNÈS) is the predominant ammonite species. Thus, the fi nding horizon most likely corresponds to the British Vermiceras scylla biohorizon which lies at the base of the Bucklandi Subzone. A new species, Cana- varites meisteri n. sp., is introduced for the specimen from Swabia. It is the fi rst unequivocal record of this rare genus besides the type localities of the two other Canavarites species near La Spezia in Italy. K e y w o r d s : Ammonites, Arietitidae, biostratigraphy, palaeobiogeography.

A detailed taxonomic study from the Involutum Zone to the lower part of the Harbledownense Zone of the Sinemurian is presented. At least 38 species are identified and described, distributed amongst 15 genera and 5 families. Three species are introduced as new: Tipperoceras n. sp. A, Tmaegoceras obesus n. sp., Arnioceras n. sp. A. Also, Echioceratidae gen. et sp. indet. is tentatively introduced as a new species and genus. The following zones of the current Sinemurian zonation for western North America (Taylor et al., 2001) can be recognized, based on the stratigraphical distribution of the taxa identified, namely the Involutum, Leslei, Carinatum and Harbledownense zones in ascending order. The Jamesi Zone placed between the last two by Taylor et al. (2001) cannot be recognized in the study areas in either Canada or the United States and therefore it is removed from the current zonation scheme. A revised zonation and definition of the zones, with precise correlation to the primary standard northwest European zonation, are provided.

  • Angulaticeras MS
Abstract Two ammonites, Angulaticeras greenoughi (J. Sowerby, 1816) and A. sp. nov. aff. angustisulcatum (Geyer, 1886), recently collected in the Sinemurian series of Burgundy are described. The latter is probably a new species. These two ammonites belong to the Schlotheimiidae family and to the genus Angulaticeras particularly. The discovery of these two rare ammonites allows, i) to describe the poorly known ontogenetic pattern of a very large Schlotheimiidae of the Early Sinemurian, ii) to precise the phyletic relationships within the genus Angulaticeras and iii) to improve the understanding of the Schlotheimiidae palaeobiogeographic significance within the NW European Sinemurian faunas.
