  • The 10 Core Concepts of Science of Mind Dr. Ernest Holmes, The
The 10 Core Concepts of Science of Mind Dr. Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science and developer of the Science of Mind philosophy, gave this definition for his teaching: Religious Science is a synthesis of the laws of science, opinions of philosophy, and revelations of religion, applied to human needs and the aspirations of humankind. Dr. Ernest Holmes was a mystic who found God in the silence. Going within and experiencing God in the deepest part of himself was his spiritual practice. His spirituality was reflected in his living; he believed he was one with God, and he experienced that oneness in all that he did. As important as the mystical experience was to Dr. Holmes, he also believed that religion had to be applied to everyday life problems, as an integral part of the walk of faith. Wholeness involved the Presence, yes, but also the Power -- the two faces of the dual nature of God. Dr. Holmes developed the Science of Mind philosophy to reflect his twin beliefs that the inner experience of God gave entry to the Power of God and that changing the way we think about our conditions causes the Power of the Universe to change those conditions to make our lives better. Science of Mind identifies the spiritual principles that apply equally to everyone in every situation, and it teaches us how to use them for our advantage. In their 1993 revision of the Foundational Class curriculum, Religious Science educators demonstrated that the Science of Mind philosophy is based on 10 Core Concepts that serve as the organizing principles of the Universe.

What kind of impact does our thoughts and thought patterns have on our everyday experiences? In this thesis I would like to examine the essence of thought and the impact that thoughts have on every aspect of our lives. In this essay I would like to take an investigative look from the origin of thought, to its’ effects and its’ influence on the manifestation of experiences in our lives. I chose the subject of thought for this thesis in order to gain a greater conscious awareness of my own thoughts and thought patterns. I also hope to consciously create experiences, in my life, that I desire. As well as, gain greater pleasure in the everyday experiences of my life by thinking and having thought patterns that are in harmony with the laws of the universe.

  • Ernest Holmes and Science of Mind
Ernest Holmes and Science of Mind Ernest Holmes Dr. Holmes (January 21, 1887 – April 7, 1960) was the founder of Religious Science. His work in the Science of Mind is recognized today as one of the leading viewpoints in modern metaphysics and New Thought. Dr. Holmes developed a universal philosophy and tools for spiritual living that profoundly resonate to this day. His work provides us with a personal spiritual path, an understanding of our relationship with the Universe, and a connected and joyful approach to daily living. Dr. Holmes wrote his seminal book The Science of Mind in 1926 and revised the text in 1938 to create an edition that has since been published in several languages. Dr. Holmes is also the author of numerous other books on metaphysics and originated the international Science of Mind magazine, which has been in continuous publication since 1927. Born in Maine, Holmes was largely self-taught, seeking out the writings of Ralph Waldo Em- erson, Christian D. Larson, Thomas Troward and Phineas Quimby. Holmes moved to Southern California in 1914. He founded the Institute of Religious Science, which became United Church of Religious Science in 1953, and is now United Centers for Spiritual Living. Holmes inspired the “positive thinking” of Norman Vincent Peale, Peggy Lee, Cary Grant, Cecil B. DeMille and countless others without ever intending to create a religion or a follow- ing of masses of people. Science of Mind Science of Mind presents a message of hope, help, and inspiration, for its practice and use extends into every form of human experience.

  • Revisioning Buddhism As a Science of the Mind in a Secularized China: a Tibetan Perspective
Journal of Global Buddhism Vol. 18 (2017): 91-111 Special Focus: Buddhists and the Making of Modern Chinese Societies Revisioning Buddhism as a Science of the Mind in a Secularized China: A Tibetan perspective Khenpo Sodargye Larung-gar Buddhist Academy Dan Smyer Yü, Center for Trans-Himalayan Studies, Yunnan Minzu University Abstract: Tibetan Buddhism is one of the fastest growing religions among Chinese in the twenty-first century. The transnational teaching activities of numerous Tibetan lamas attest to this religious trend in the popular realm of contemporary China. Unlike on their native soil, Tibetan lamas immersed in urban China encounter converts whose acceptance of Buddhism often rests upon a “scientific” assessment of Buddhism. Thus, the Buddhism- science dialogue stands out as a central theme in contemporary Sino-Tibetan Buddhist encounters. Based on the authors’ collaborative study of the Buddhism-science entanglement in this transnational Buddhist context, this article will illustrate that science signifies not merely the conventionally accepted system of knowledge, based on the modern, empirically- driven search for the understanding of the material world. Instead, it connotes a web of interconnected social meanings pertaining to Buddhist understanding, critique, and appropriation of this web. In this regard, the authors argue that simultaneously, science is identified as an integral part of the iconoclastic secularism in modern China subject to contemporary Buddhist critique, science is utilized as an instrument of Buddhist conversion, and science is reconceived as a neutral, open social space for knowledge making, in which an increasing number of Buddhist teachers persistently claim Buddhism as a science of its own.

  • Quotes from Dr. Ernest Holmes
Ernest Holmes Quotes on PEACEFULNESS/PEACE The first part is from the Compilation by Rev. Katherine Neville Smith Creative Mind (1919): 1. What more can we ask! What greater realization of life than to know that God is with us! From this great realization comes peace, a peace which the world little understands, and a calm which is as deep as the infinite sea of love in which he realizes himself to be immersed. (p. 25.2) Creative Mind and Success (1919): 1. In the silence of the soul’s communion with the Great Cause of All Being, into the stillness of the Absolute, into the secret place of the Most High, back of the din and the ceaseless roar of life, we shall find a resting place and a place of real spiritual power. (p. 77.1) Science of Mind (1938): 1. “Peace is brought about through a conscious unity of the personal man with the inner principle of his life -- that underlying current, flowing from a divine center, pressing ever outward into expression. But this can never come by proxy. We can hire others to work for us, to care for our physical needs, but no one can live for us. This we must do for ourselves.” (p. 445.3) This Thing Called You (1948): 1. First of all you must arrive at peace of mind. It is only on the basis of peace that you can persist with absolute certainty. Peace alone gives poise. There is an intuition within you which already knows that you are one with good, that your destiny is certain, and you must listen to this intuition for it is the voice of God in you.
