The 10 Core Concepts of Science of Mind Dr. Ernest Holmes, The
The 10 Core Concepts of Science of Mind Dr. Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science and developer of the Science of Mind philosophy, gave this definition for his teaching: Religious Science is a synthesis of the laws of science, opinions of philosophy, and revelations of religion, applied to human needs and the aspirations of humankind. Dr. Ernest Holmes was a mystic who found God in the silence. Going within and experiencing God in the deepest part of himself was his spiritual practice. His spirituality was reflected in his living; he believed he was one with God, and he experienced that oneness in all that he did. As important as the mystical experience was to Dr. Holmes, he also believed that religion had to be applied to everyday life problems, as an integral part of the walk of faith. Wholeness involved the Presence, yes, but also the Power -- the two faces of the dual nature of God. Dr. Holmes developed the Science of Mind philosophy to reflect his twin beliefs that the inner experience of God gave entry to the Power of God and that changing the way we think about our conditions causes the Power of the Universe to change those conditions to make our lives better. Science of Mind identifies the spiritual principles that apply equally to everyone in every situation, and it teaches us how to use them for our advantage. In their 1993 revision of the Foundational Class curriculum, Religious Science educators demonstrated that the Science of Mind philosophy is based on 10 Core Concepts that serve as the organizing principles of the Universe. -

The Heritage of Non-theistic Belief in China Joseph A. Adler Kenyon College Presented to the international conference, "Toward a Reasonable World: The Heritage of Western Humanism, Skepticism, and Freethought" (San Diego, September 2011) Naturalism and humanism have long histories in China, side-by-side with a long history of theistic belief. In this paper I will first sketch the early naturalistic and humanistic traditions in Chinese thought. I will then focus on the synthesis of these perspectives in Neo-Confucian religious thought. I will argue that these forms of non-theistic belief should be considered aspects of Chinese religion, not a separate realm of philosophy. Confucianism, in other words, is a fully religious humanism, not a "secular humanism." The religion of China has traditionally been characterized as having three major strands, the "three religions" (literally "three teachings" or san jiao) of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Buddhism, of course, originated in India in the 5th century BCE and first began to take root in China in the 1st century CE, so in terms of early Chinese thought it is something of a latecomer. Confucianism and Daoism began to take shape between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. But these traditions developed in the context of Chinese "popular religion" (also called folk religion or local religion), which may be considered a fourth strand of Chinese religion. And until the early 20th century there was yet a fifth: state religion, or the "state cult," which had close relations very early with both Daoism and Confucianism, but after the 2nd century BCE became associated primarily (but loosely) with Confucianism. -

Printed in the United Kingdom. © 2005 The National University of Singapore doi:10.1017/S0022463405000251 Beyond Syncretism: Hybridization of Popular Religion in Contemporary Thailand Pattana Kitiarsa This article challenges the dominant paradigm of ‘inclusive syncretism’ in the study of Thai religion. By taking the worship of multi-original deities in the popular spirit- medium cults in contemporary Thailand as a case study, it argues that practitioners and specialists working on Thai religious studies need to refresh and update their analytical paradigm to incorporate the concept of ‘hybridization’. Syncretism is a proven analytical model, particularly in studies of Thai Buddhism, but it is neither a perennial nor a flawless one. It cannot be denied that Thai religion by and large has maintained its complex syncretic outlook. However, it is argued here that the focal point for students and specialists should be not the harmonious continu- ities and transformations of a syncretistic religious system, but rather the ruptures and breaks from its seemingly homogenous tradition. Based on a close consideration of the ‘parade of supernaturals’ flooding spirit-shrine altars in popular spirit-medium cults since the 1980s, I propose that Thailand’s popular beliefs and religiosity in the past few decades have been undergoing a significant degree of ‘subtle hybridization’, where religious commodification and capitalist consumerism have been increasingly prominent.1 Pattana Kitiarsa is a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. The questions addressed in this paper are the following: What was the place of divina- tion in the traditional Japanese society and within ancient bodies of knowledge? What part of traditional science and cosmology does it form? What are the main methods of divination used in Japan? How was divination related to the Shinto and Buddhist worldview and reli- gious practices? What elements of Indian astrology and divination have been introduced by the Buddhist monks to Japan? And which forms of divination are of Chinese origins? Finally, which of the mantic practices are likely to persist even nowadays and why? These and similar questions are discussed, emphasizing some resumptive cross-cultural and hermeneutic meth- odological considerations. The hermeneutical examinations of those practices are significant for the comparative history of ideas and also for understanding of contemporary religious practices and beliefs. Such approach can also assist in revealing the local modes of cultural transmission of knowledge in Asia, methods of social control, and the nature of the cultural norms, that shaped the traditional epistemic field. -

Jasmyn Murrell Virtuous Life, Honored Afterlife and the Evolution of Confucianism By Jasmyn Murrell Abstract: Confucius states that we must not focus on the afterlife, because we know so little of it, and we must focus on everyday life. However, Confucianism holds a philosophy of afterlife, even if it is not outright said or depicted. This paper will aim to prove just that. First, through Confucian ideals of being a dutiful person, to grant yourself an honored afterlife, and second, through how Confucianism influenced other religions such as Buddhism and Daoism, which will show a clear depiction of afterlife by considering death rituals, festivals, commune with ancestors, prayers, tomb decor, and the ideology of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism – you will begin to see the depiction of afterlife within Confucianism. But also, you will get to see how Confucianism has evolved and took on traits of both Daoism and Buddhism, which in turn is called Neo-Confucianism. -

Burmese Buddhism and its Impact on Social Change By Min Zin Burmese Buddhists still seem to be sleeping in the "magical gardens", to use Max Weber's term, in which tradition is never questioned. Unfortunately, their sleep is full of misery since they constantly/endlessly see nightmares in their dreams. If each idea has or bears fruit as thinkers claim, the fruit that Theravada Buddhism (the way or doctrine of the elders), which wins eighty-nine percent of population's heart in Burma, breeds in Burmese society should be critically examined. The issue of whether there is causation or at least correlation between the predominantly Buddhist society and the consequent "un- Buddhist" experiences remains highly contestable and seemingly unresolved. As is well-known, the people of Burma bear unspeakable suffering derived from gross human rights violations, kleptocratic corruption, a media blackout and the world's top drug industry. The irony is that if basic Buddhist teaching of the five precepts – abstaining from killing, stealing, engaging in sexual misconduct, lying, and using drugs - were observed, as religious devotees recommend, these afflictions would not have fallen upon Burma. However, the reality proves that Burma’s nickname, “The Golden Land,” so called because of the glittering pagodas and temples throughout the country, is nothing more than words. The question of why a Buddhist country suffers from such atrocious misery seems to be confusing and bewildering for those who have great passion and faith in the “idea” and its fruit! Although Burma is not religiously monolithic, popular Buddhist culture has considerable influence on people's attitudes, behavior and social relationships. -
