Reverend L. J. Capobianco is an ordained Christian Minister. He previously held positions as an Assistant Director for the United Cerebral Palsy Association, pre-school teacher to minority children, ski tour guide, and is a U.S. Air Force veteran. In his mid-thirties he answered a call to enter the ministry and earned degrees from Temple University and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, then served as a church pastor for over 30 years. Since his retirement he's written several books and also volunteers as a chaplain for the county sheriff's office. As A Man Thinks By Rev. Leonard J. Capobianco Hymns: Love Divine O Jesus I Have Promised Higher Ground Lord Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing ISAIAH 55:6-9 SEEK THE LORD WHILE HE MAY BE FOUND, CALL UPON HIM WHILE HE IS NEAR: LET THE WICKED FORSAKE HIS WAY AND THE UNRIGHTEOUS MAN HIS THOUGHTS: LET HIM RETURN TO THE LORD, THAT HE MAY HAVE MERCY ON HIM, AND TO OUR GOD FOR HE WILL ABUNDANTLY PARDON. FOR MY THOUGHTS ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS, NEITHER ARE YOUR WAYS MY WAYS, SAYS THE LORD. FOR AS THE HEAVENS ARE HIGHER THAN THE EARTH, SO ARE MY WAYS HIGHER THAN YOUR WAYS AND MY THOUGHTS THAN YOUR THOUGHTS.” Is this true? Are Gods ways higher than ours? If we believe that – then we’d be pretty foolish to live life differently than what the Bible teaches. I’ve never read, or seen, or heard, or known of any person on earth whose life would not have been improved if they had followed God’s thoughts and not their own.

The 10 Core Concepts of Science of Mind Dr. Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science and developer of the Science of Mind philosophy, gave this definition for his teaching: Religious Science is a synthesis of the laws of science, opinions of philosophy, and revelations of religion, applied to human needs and the aspirations of humankind. Dr. Ernest Holmes was a mystic who found God in the silence. Going within and experiencing God in the deepest part of himself was his spiritual practice. His spirituality was reflected in his living; he believed he was one with God, and he experienced that oneness in all that he did. As important as the mystical experience was to Dr. Holmes, he also believed that religion had to be applied to everyday life problems, as an integral part of the walk of faith. Wholeness involved the Presence, yes, but also the Power -- the two faces of the dual nature of God. Dr. Holmes developed the Science of Mind philosophy to reflect his twin beliefs that the inner experience of God gave entry to the Power of God and that changing the way we think about our conditions causes the Power of the Universe to change those conditions to make our lives better. Science of Mind identifies the spiritual principles that apply equally to everyone in every situation, and it teaches us how to use them for our advantage. In their 1993 revision of the Foundational Class curriculum, Religious Science educators demonstrated that the Science of Mind philosophy is based on 10 Core Concepts that serve as the organizing principles of the Universe.

Glenn F. Chesnut — Emmet Fox and New Thought — Page 1 Emmet Fox and New Thought Glenn F. Chesnut The problem of pain and suffering: Emmet Fox and New Thought One extreme answer to the problem of pain and suffering was given in the New Thought movement, which had a great influence on many of the Protestants in early AA. These New Thought authors taught that pain and suffering were fundamentally produced, not by external conditions, but by wrong thinking. If we changed the way we thought, the external world would change to match our new ideas. This group of American and British teachers, preachers, writers, and healers included Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802- 1866), Emma Curtis Hopkins (1849–1925), Thomas Troward (1847- 1916), and Emmet Fox (1886-1951). I would also include, as part of this tradition, a number of more recent figures such as Louise Hay (b. 1926), Helen Schucman (1909-1981), and Marianne Williamson (b. 1952), although these three latter figures of course had no influence on the world of early AA. The New Thought movement has at this time not been studied much or usually even taken with much seriousness by academic theologians and scholarly historians of thought. Even the largest New Thought denominational organizations (Unity Church, Church of Divine Science, and Religious Science) are quite small. Yet Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life (1984) has sold 35 million copies to date (as opposed to 30 million copies for the AA Big Glenn F. Chesnut — Emmet Fox and New Thought — Page 2 Book), and even the works of some of the other New Thoughts authors have sometimes sold quite well.

HUBBS Acx: in August, 1935, that always-helpful contributor, B Marie Winchell Walker, had a NAUTILUS article on "Key to Demonstration," the first sentence of which was: "You can demonstrate health and prosperity, not by any power or piety of your own, but by faith in God as law and love." And in her second paragraph she gave a clear reason for her opening statement by saying: "Since God is love, the creative principle must work through the medium of uni versal love." Here are two vital points. The first, that demonstration is not solely based on one's personal piety, but by an under standing of the nature of God - just, for example, as you must know the nature of your children or your friends to deal successfully with them. Too often, I fear, we deal with God according to our natures. The second point is this: that since God is love we obvi ously must speak his love language if we expect him to re spond. Could you expect a God of love to respond to a hate language? Or to a selfish, or a personal-worth, or a mere wish language? It will help us to properly value this point if we recall that God's language is spoken by our hearts, not by our lips; for, as it says in Revelation, "the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance" and by what is said - ' 'but the Lord looketh on the heart.'' By examining your heart, God detects whether, as Dr.

Running Head: THE JOSEPH DILEMMA The Joseph Dilemma: Spiritual Advisors and the Burden of Political Access Daniel F. Flores, Ph.D. The Fourteenth Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies History Work Group Pembroke College, Oxon 18 August 2018 THE JOSEPH DILEMMA 2 Abstract Christian ministers have assumed the role of spiritual advisors to Presidents since the founding of the nation. In this capacity, they have provided pastoral counsel and public policy advice to the Commander in Chief. This peculiar marriage between Church and State has not been without criticism. In the present administration, some spiritual advisors compare themselves to the biblical Joseph who found favor with Pharaoh. At issue is that critics insist their privileged access to the President comes with a moral responsibility to speak truth to power. This paper does not attempt to resolve differences between spiritual advisors and their critics. Rather, it is concerned with how presidential spiritual advisors have functioned historically as religious lobbyists, chaplains, and members of focus groups in service of the Church and the White House. THE JOSEPH DILEMMA 3 The Joseph Dilemma The adage is true that it is lonely at the top. On May 26, 1899, President McKinley signed a personal note to himself that he later tucked into his letter book. “My belief embraces the Divinity of Christ and a recognition of Christianity as the mightiest factor in the world’s civilization.” This confession of faith, minimal as it was, was written not to estrange himself from Methodism, but to affirm that his personalized faith still resided in the Methodist communion (Leech, 462).

  • The First Roman Catholics in Alcoholics Anonymous
CHESNUT — FATHER ED DOWLING — PAGE 1 September 3, 2011 The First Roman Catholics in Alcoholics Anonymous Glenn F. Chesnut Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in 1935 by two men, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, who had been brought up as Protestants, and specifically, as New England Congregationalists. In spite of the fact that Congregationalism’s roots had lain in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Puritanism (the world of Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter) this was a denomination which had developed and changed to the point where they very strongly took the liberal side—not the fundamentalist side—in the great fundamentalist-liberal debate which arose within early twentieth-century American Protestantism. In 1957 (two years after AA’s “coming of age” at its St. Louis convention) the Congregationalists united with another modernist mainline American denomination to form the extremely liberal United Church of Christ. At the time they first met, in 1935, Bill W. and Dr. Bob had both recently become involved with a controversial Protestant evangelical association called the Oxford Group, and initially worked with alcoholics under its umbrella. Nevertheless, both of them (as well as the majority of the alcoholics whom they sobered up during the first few years) came from liberal Protestant backgrounds, so a kind of generalized liberal Protestant influence rapidly became just as important as that of the Oxford Group. And contact with the New Thought movement (especially Emmet Fox) introduced an even more radical form of liberal Protestantism which was also a force in early AA.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING BROTHER NORMAN VINCENT PEALE MAY 31, 1898 – DECEMBER 24, 1993 The Fall season is here, and winter with its arctic blasts of snow and cold will soon be upon us. As the landscape becomes harsh and barren, and the temperatures plummet, it is easy forget the bounteous harvests that the Fall had just brought and that the glory and beauty of Spring are just a few months away. Similarly, in our personal lives, we often become mired down in the problems that confront us daily; our lives seem to lose meaning, purpose, and focus, as a cold blanket of discontent with our lives and surroundings settles miserably down upon us. Members in our lodges face similar problems in trying to deal with the twin problems of membership and overcoming the apathy within the lodge. All too often, when wrapped in the bitter grasp of despondency, we give up and ignore signs of change around us which signal the return of better times. In so doing we fail to take steps which would hasten the onset of renewed growth and prosperity or, even worse, allow opportunity to wither and die because we give up hope or no longer care. We miss the lesson of the seasons and lie buried in a perpetual winter of despair. Some men, however refuse to succumb to the pressures and problems of everyday life, never losing sight of the spring that awaits those who refuse to fail. One of these special men was Dr. and Brother Norman Vincent Peale who touched millions of people during his lifetime with his message that when people seek the assistance of God and utilize the power gained by thinking positively and accepting responsibility for their lives and actions, failure can be turned into success and despondency into happiness.
