  • The Gateway Theater Logan Square
Newsletter – January 2017 Number XXV A Gorgeous Garden of Dreams: The Gateway Theater Logan Square This past year, the Northwest Chicago Historical Society was proud that Jefferson Park and Portage Park were chosen to showcase venues in Open House Chicago, an annual architectural festi- val organized by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Multiple establishments on the Northwest side opened their door for the very first time to host curious guests from all over the country. The venues included the Copernicus Center, Carl Schurz High School, the Jefferson Masonic Temple, the Rivoli Theater, Our Lady of Victory, Portage Arts Lofts, and the Portage Theater. Over 100,000 people partici- pated this year, making it one of the largest events of its kind in the world. We hope that we are able to continue to bring more people into the area to visit our historical and cultural heritage. In our most recent newsletter issues, members were most excited about the movie theater pic- tures, so this issue continues on that theme. This time, we feature the Kobelinski Theater, a theater inside the Copernicus Center that has been redeveloped into a cultural venue and multi-event complex. At one time, this was called the Gateway Theater, and it was the largest movie palaces on the Northwest Side. Since the Copernicus Center purchased the Gateway, they transformed the lobby and outside mar- quee to be more reflective of its current usage. However, the community is fortunate that they saved the theater from the wrecking ball and have beautifully preserved the historic, decorative interior. While the venue now is mostly used for live performances, the center also hosts many multi-cultural and neighbor- hood events.

  • Poland 2017 International Religious Freedom Report
POLAND 2017 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution provides for freedom of religion and states that religion is a personal choice, and all churches and religious organizations have equal rights. An agreement with the Holy See determines relations with the Roman Catholic Church and grants it privileges not accorded to other religious groups. Statutes adopted because of agreements between the government and other churches and religious organizations determine relations with those groups. The criminal code prohibits public speech offensive to religious sentiment. The Supreme Administrative Court dismissed an appeal that, if successful, would have led to the deregistering of the Union of Progressive Jewish Communities in Poland. The government made a final determination on 60 communal property restitution cases involving claims by religious communities during the year, out of approximately 3,600 outstanding. The leader of the governing Law and Justice Party (PiS) met with Jewish groups after they wrote to him expressing concerns over growing anti-Semitism. Parliament asked the interior minister to respond after Muslim groups wrote to the speaker of the lower house asking him to protect the Muslim minority. The interior minister ordered an investigation after Holocaust survivor groups discovered that a 1999 video of naked people laughing and playing tag in a concentration camp gas chamber had been filmed in the former Nazi Stutthof concentration camp. PiS members made statements against Muslim migrants, and one party parliamentarian tweeted an anti-Semitic comment. The PiS leader denounced anti-Semitism, and President Andrzej Duda said the country had a duty to speak out about the extermination of its Jewish population by the Nazis during WWII.

This is going to be an enhanced cooperation. It's going to be an enduring presence, which hopefully will increase gradually in terms of the number of troops, but also in terms of infrastructure which is very important - Andrzej Duda, President of the Republic of Poland Editorial Dear Readers, he ninth issue of the quarterly opens with an article about the infrastructure project of strategic imperative for Poland – the construction of the Solidarity Transport Hub Central Airport. In the piece by the TSecretary of State and Government Plenipotentiary for the Central Communication Port, Minister Mikołaj Wild maintains that the project is a development impulse for Poland and Central Eastern Europe. Jefferson Park, Chicago seankeenehan.wordpress.com /2012/12/10/jefferson-park-chicago/ Posted by sean keenehan Art and community involvement thrive together to boost spirits on Chicago’s Northwest Side By Sean Keenehan CHICAGO: When residents begin to feel that their voices are not being heard and their ideas ignored, complacency can often overtake a strong neighborhood. Sometimes a neighborhood just needs a good wake-up call and that is exactly what has recently happened in the Jefferson Park neighborhood. Jefferson Park, along with Portage Park, Norwood Park, Gladstone Park and the Mayfair area, is a neighborhood that falls within the 45th Ward on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Ideally located in close proximity to two major expressways, including Interstate 90 and I- 94, and plenty of public transportation, as the intermodal Jefferson Park Transit Center at 4917/4963 N. Milwaukee Ave. contains the CTA Blue Line, a CTA bus terminal and the An intermodal transportion mecca that houses the CTA Blue LIne, CTA bus terminal and elevated Metra Union Pacific/Northwest Line, Jefferson Park is a full-fledged Metra Union Pacific/Northwest Line, located transportation hub. just above Interstate 90 Expressway, offers easy access to pubic transportation. Although it is very convenient for commuters to get in and out of Jefferson Park, the community of Jefferson Park itself offers much more to residents and visitors than just easy access to public transportation. “We have our own police station, we have a library, we have a firehouse, we have a post office,” said Brian Nadig, co-publisher of Nadig Newspapers, currently the Northwest Side of Chicago’s only local newspaper, located at 4937 N.
