Day 2 - Saturday, February 20, 2021 – Set Sail This morning we have continental breakfast at the hotel before continuing down the coast to Miami. Early this afternoon we board MSC’S SEASIDE for our seven-night cruise adventure to San Juan, Puerto Rico - Charlotte Amaile, St. Thomas - Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic – Ocean Cay, MSC Marine Reserve. Day 3 - Sunday, February 21, 2021 We spend the today at sea, where we will want to take advantage of all the shipboard activities available. We can find everything we want in the duty-free shops, so we’ll want to allow time to browse in these unique boutiques! Day 4 - Monday, February 22, 2021 As soon as you disembark from your MSC cruise ship in the port of San Juan, Puerto Rico, you will feel as if you are part of an adventure film. San Juan is one of the world’s top cruise ship destinations. As recently as the 1970s, Old San Juan (Viejo San Juan) was a reminder of better times, a run-down collection of Spanish colonial relics, in little better shape than the collapsed em- pire that constructed them. Now, however, after extensive and careful restoration, this seven-block-square area is considered one of the best-kept troves of Spanish colonial architecture and has become a World Heritage Site. We’ll have from 5:00 pm until 1:00 am to take advantage of the many shore excursions and activities available. Day 5 Tuesday, February 23, 2021 We arrive in beautiful Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas about 7:00 am this morning. We may want to take an excursion that includes a ride on Skyline Drive and enjoy a breathtaking view of St. Thomas Harbor and then travel to Mountain Top, the highest point on St.Thomas, and see spectacular views of Magens Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Continued on next page Page 34 We can check out Coral World Marine Park or travel 700 feet above the sea via skyride to The Paradise Point and see the most fan- tastic vistas in the Caribbean. We’ll want to save time for browsing through the shop-lined streets of Charlotte Amalie. We depart at 2:00 pm today. Day 6 - Wednesday, February 24, 2021 This morning we arrive at Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic at 10:00 am. San Felipe de Puerto Plata is the capital of the Puerto Plata province on the Dominican Republic’s Atlantic north coast. The city is best known for its beaches. Playa Dorada’s lengthy beachfront is backed by resorts and an 18-hole golf course. The city’s old colonial-era center is dominated by the 16th- century Fortaleza San Felipe, a Spanish fortress that now houses historical and military artifacts. We have several options for shore excursions to consider. Amber is the national gem of the Dominican Republic and the Amber museum is meant to celebrate its beauty. This museum is set in a beautiful Victorian-style building and it displays several specimens of valuable Dominican amber, many of which have been fossilized with flora and fauna. It also has a gift shop, where you can purchase amber jewelry. Fort San Felipe is Puerto Plata’s only remaining colonial structure and is one of the first European forts constructed in the Americas. It was built to fight off French and English pirates and remains today as a testament to the country’s colonial history. Inside you can find many interesting wartime artifacts as well as a small museum. We depart at 6:00 pm. Day 7 - Thursday, February 25, 2021 We spend the today at sea, where we will want to take advantage of all the shipboard activities available. We can find everything we want in the duty-free shops, so we’ll want to allow time to browse in these unique boutiques! Day 8 - Friday, February 26, 2021 We arrive at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve at 7:00 am this morning. Here we can spend a one-of-a-kind experience on an authentic Caribbean Marine Reserve while connecting with the natural world, feeling the warmth of the Bahamian spirit and im- mersing in an eco-friendly environment.     U.S. Department of Justice National Drug Intelligence Center Puerto Rico/ U.S. Virgin Islands High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Drug Market Analysis 2011 Source Summary Statement The National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) has high confidence in this drug market analysis as it is based on multiple sources of information that have proved highly reliable in prior NDIC, law enforcement, and intelligence community reporting. Quantitative data, including seizure, eradication, and arrest statistics, were drawn from data sets maintained by federal, state, or local government agencies. Discussions of the prevalence and consequences of drug abuse are based on published reports from U.S. Government agencies and interviews with public health officials deemed reliable because of their expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of drug abuse.     Irish Migration Studies in Latin America Irish Indentured Servants, Papists and Colonists in Spanish Colonial Puerto Rico, ca. 1650-1800 By Jorge L. Chinea Abstract The historical treatment of Irish Catholics by the English and British governments has been the subject of much examination, but systematic research on the social, economic, and political impact of Irish refugees who sought asylum in Spain and Latin America at various times since the sixteenth century has only recently drawn the attention of scholars. The Irish experience in Spanish colonial Puerto Rico is no exception. Puerto Rican historiography acknowledges the presence of a handful of Irish planters in the late eighteenth century, but provides few clues about those who came before or after that time (Picó 1986: 142). Nor are the ‘push’ factors that might help explain why they came to the island discussed at any length. This essay seeks to bridge this gap by linking the Irish diaspora to a long history of Anglo- Spanish rivalry both in Europe and the West Indies. In doing so, it also aims to show how changes in Spain’s colonial priorities impacted on Irish immigration in Puerto Rico. Three numerically small but significant Irish ‘waves’ are identified and briefly examined in the context of Spain’s foreign immigration policy: indentured servants around the middle of the seventeenth century; illegal traders in the early 1700s; and Irish farmers, artisans and soldiers during the late Bourbon period, c. 1750-1815. the course of the seventeenth century. Support For Hurricane Maria Recovery The Jones Act: The Foundation of the U.S. Domestic Maritime Industry The Jones Act, section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (46 U.S.C. § 883), has long been regarded as a cornerstone of U.S. maritime policy. The Jones Act governs the waterborne transportation of merchandise between two points in the United States, requiring it take place on vessels built in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens (at least 75 percent), and manned by U.S. citizen crews. This federal law, along with related cabotage laws, ensures that companies engaging in domestic trades or services compete equally and are fully subject to U.S. laws and regulations. The Jones Act is pre-dated by numerous U.S. cabotage laws established at the founding of the nation under the First Congress of the United States. Named after Senator Wesley L. Jones of Washington, who was chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee at that time, the Jones Act continues to be upheld on principles of military preparedness, border and waterway security, and commercial vitality.
