may 31,2020 3 From the Pastor’s Desk… Lord, send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth (Ps. 104:30).

Today, Pentecost Sunday, marks the culmination of the Easter season. Today we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit, the birth of the Church, the Body of Christ on earth. At the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles, filled them with His power and His gifts, and transformed them from timid, fearful followers to assured, bold preachers of the Gospel. As we reflect on the Scripture read- ings today, let us open our hearts to welcome the Holy Spirit so that He will equip us similarly with the love and wisdom to carry out our vocation to continue Christ’s work on earth.

In the Old Testament, God frequently reveals his presence in fire (e.g. the pillar of fire that led the Isra- elites in the desert when they escaped from ), and in wind (e.g. the strong east wind that divided the waters of the Red Sea and turned it into dry land, thus enabling the Israelites to cross it.) The He- brew word for spirit, ruah, and the Greek word, pneuma, also refer to the movement of air, not only as wind, but also of life-giving breath (as in God's creation of man in Genesis 2 and the revivification of the dry bones in Ezekiel 37).

In the first reading, St. Luke uses the images of wind and fire in his account of the Pentecost. Through his life-giving “breath”, the Lord begins the era of the new Israel on Pentecost. In Jesus' “breathing” upon them the new life of the Spirit, the community of the Resurrection, the Church, takes flight. That same Spirit continues to “blow” in today’s Church to give life and direction to our mission and ministry to preach the Gospel to every nation, to proclaim forgiveness and reconciliation in God's name, and to baptize all humanity into the life of Jesus' Resurrection.

In the second reading, St. Paul makes a very important statement: “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ ex- cept by the Holy Spirit.” (1 Cor 12:3) This means God Himself enables us through the Holy Spirit to recognize and acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The Bible reminds us that the Spirit we have received is not the spirit of fear and timidity. According to our Catechism, it is the Spirit that empowers us and makes us strong Christians and soldiers of Christ (CCC 1302). We must no longer be timid Christians, but Christians who are bold enough to call God our Father. St. Paul exhorts us to “Live by the Spirit,” and thus experience the fruits of the Holy Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” in our daily lives.

On Pentecost, we rejoice in the Spirit’s abiding presence and gifts. We ask for a renewed outpouring of the Spirit for the sake of the kingdom and the Church. Going forth from the Easter season, let us pray for an increased awareness of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst and more importantly, His indwelling in us, and a deeper appreciation of His manifold roles as we proclaim, “Lord, send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!”

Happy Pentecost! Fr. John Francis

may 31,2020 8 SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2020 GOSPEL JOHN 20:19-23 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disci- ples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

pentecost Sunday 9 DOMINGO, MAYO 31, 2020 EVANGELIO JUAN 20:19-23
