SECOND READING — 2 PETER 3:8-14 Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard “delay,” but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.

Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.

Stewarding God’s gifts and mysteries to make missionary disciples for Jesus Christ and His Church.

It has been a few weeks now since the parish was introduced to the new vision statement, “Stewarding God’s gifts and mysteries to make missionary disciples for Jesus Christ and His Church.” Four areas of pastoral life were enumerated, and five “pillars” were put in place to support those areas. As Advent continues into its second week now, may I present some reflections for us all to ponder in this special season of light and expectation. Central to our Catholic identity is the celebration of the Eucharist, the Mass. It is both “source and summit” according to the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, and how we approach our celebrations matters. When the goal is to offer up our first and best resources, it means we acknowledge the importance of the Eucharist as the source of spiritual life in the Church. This leads us to the desire to make each liturgy an experience where those coming together to worship offer themselves along with the gifts of bread and wine that become the Lord’s Body and Blood, the summit of what holds the Church in communion . If the supporting pillar encourages us to establish grateful disposition, how do you and I do that? Does it mean preparing before we come to the celebration by reading the Scriptures? What about listening intently to the texts and expecting God to speak to us through them? Grateful means we come ready to return thanks to God for everything we have been given. Are we grateful for the Word of God that gives us life and guidance? Do we hunger for the Holy Eucharist that is our nourishment for the journey of our lives? These are such strange times when our gatherings are limited, and restrictions placed upon them. And yet, we have continued, sometimes even without an assembly, or with an assembly who join virtually. But that doesn’t stop us from keeping the Eucharist central. The Lord Jesus Christ, whose coming in the flesh we celebrate at Christmas, continues to come in the flesh as the Bread of Life. May we always treasure this central mystery that we have been entrusted to steward. PARISH NEWS

ADVENT HYMN HISTORY Dr. Vincent E. Rone (Director of Music)

The Offertory hymn for the Second Sunday of Advent is one of the most joyful of the season: “Comfort, Comfort, O My People.” The original title of this chorale (reminder, the Lutheran equivalent of a hymn) is Freu dich sehr, O meine Seele, roughly translated as “Rejoice greatly, O NEWS PARISH my soul,” and has a whopping ten verses! The prolific Lutheran pastor Johannes Olearius (1611–1684) originally studied theology and thereafter wrote a full-length commentary on the Bible in addition to several hundred hymns, Freu dich sehr among them. Published in 1671, the text is a versification of Isaiah 40: 1-5 with additional imagery and passages from chapters 40-66. Olearius directed this hymn to honor the feast day of John the Baptist, since the Scriptural passages relay consolation, hope, and repentance to Judah during the Babylonian exile. This hymn, like “Sleepers Wake” from last week’s bulletin, has stood the test of time for approximately 400 years, not in the least for its joyful profile. Moreover, Catherine Winkworth (1827–78) proved instrumental in disseminating the hymn into English-speaking lands with her careful , “Comfort, Comfort, Ye My People.” The tune, often called GENEVA 42, is itself older than Olearius’s hymn text. The French Renaissance composer Claude Goudimel (1505–72) wrote the melody for the text of Psalm 42 and originally intended for its inclusion in the Genevan Psalter. Consequently, this hymn tune is a contrafactum— musical terminology for using a pre-existing tune set to new words. Ironically, the texts of Psalm 42 and “Comfort, Comfort,” have almost polar-opposite tones because the former expresses lament and the latter, hope. GENEVA 42 set to the words “Comfort, Comfort” therefore should reflect the optimism of the hymn text by way of a quick tempo, buoyant character, and distinctive dance-like rhythms. A large portion of tunes written in the Renaissance and Baroque eras (roughly 1400–1750) are based on dance, and “Comfort, Comfort” is no exception. Take a moment to listen especially to the catchy rhythms and melody in the following settings. A typical rendition: www.youtube.com/results?search_query=comfort+comfort+o+my+people A lively arrangement of the hymn: www.youtube.com/watch?v=119C58F3dnQ And some pieces from the Western classical tradition. Tune in next week for the next Hymn History!

ALL ABOUT Each year, on December 6th, we celebrate the feast of Saint Nicholas. Although he is most popular in his role as “,” St. Nicholas of was a bishop and martyr in the third century. Here are a few interesting facts about his life! • St. Nicholas is the of children, sailors, merchants, thieves, and pawnbrokers. • He was of Greek descent and was born during the third century in the village of . He lived most of his life in the nearby town of Myra (both of which were part , present-day ). • The name “Nicholas” means “people’s victory” in Greek. • He was often referred to as “”, becoming a bishop at the age of only 30 years. He was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Myra during a time when Christians were persecuted by the Romans. • He was jailed by the Roman Emperor for seven years until he was freed when Emperor Constantine, the first Christian Emperor, issued the Edict of Milan in 313. • According to legend, he helped three girls who couldn’t get married and were about to be sold by their fathers to due to poverty by throwing purses of gold through their window for three consecutive nights. • Legend also says that the saint brought back to life three children who were chopped by a butcher to cure and sell as ham. • There are records of him intervening in the execution of three innocent men who were condemned to be executed by a corrupt magistrate because of a bribe. • St. Nicholas’ remains were buried in where a was built for him. However, his bones were stolen by Venetian sailors and they are now in the church of St. Nicholas on Lido, , Italy. • He died at age 73 on the 3rd of December, 343. Research on the remains of St. Nicholas in 2005 shows that he was five feet tall and that he had a broken nose.

CELEBRATING There are many great traditions surrounding Saint Nicholas Day! Here are a few: Leaving or Boots Out on December 5th One tradtition is to leave out a or boot in the hallway on the evening of December 5th for St. Nick’s arrival on December 6th. This is similar to the idea of doing stockings on Christmas Day. In the boots, kids might find coins, treats, oranges, and small toys. Random Acts of Kindness The most important lesson from the legend of St. Nicholas is his generosity. To help us all remember this, you can make a point to do random acts of kindness this time of year. Brainstorm creative ways to help those in need in your local area, and set about your “secret” mission to bring some joy to others. Here are a few ideas: • Drop off grocery store gift cards to families in need. • Give a big box of wrapped gifts and clothes to families who need them. • Anonymously pay the utility bills of someone in need. • Wrap gifts or donate items to local foster programs.
