Call for Audio Works CALL FOR AUDIO WORKS We are looking for homemade radio - radio play, documentary, sound art and everything in between, no longer than 20 minutes, gladly shorter. The selected pieces are broadcast and discussed in the monthly program Kurzstrecke. The author receives payment for each piece that is broadcast. Kurzstrecke is a joint project of the producers of Freispiel (experimental radio drama), Klangkunst (sound art), and Feature (documentary) on Deutschlandfunk Kultur, national public culture radio channel in Germany. We support radio dramas that seek new forms of narration, sound art pieces that give noises a voice, and artistic documentaries that bring multi-faceted stories to the radio. All this is being produced in the "classic" one-hour format, but also in shorter forms that are nimble enough to break fresh ground and leave stylistic boundaries behind. We will present such audio miniatures every last Thursday of the month at 22:03 h CET (including one re-run a few days later and a seven day catch-up). Information on submission guidelines We are calling for innovative, timely, radiophonic audio pieces. We will select the most interesting submissions and present them on our monthly late show Kurzstrecke. Information for Applicants Pieces no longer than 20 minutes Preferably pieces not yet broadcast on German public radio Pieces not previously released on CD Pieces made available for download as wav files (no aiff or mp3) or on CD Upload relevant information on the piece and the artists as pdf or txt file Selected pieces will be bought for two broadcasts – all rights remain with the authors Pieces in languages other than German should be intelligible for German listeners without translation Please send your submissions to Direct link to the upload portal https://kurzstrecke.deutschlandradio.de/login Julia Gabel, Johann Mittmann / Freispiel [email protected] Marcus Gammel / Klangkunst [email protected] Ingo Kottkamp / Feature [email protected] Deutschlandfunk Kultur Abt. Press Release Potsdam 19.10.2018 Potsdam Declaration signed by 21 public broadcasters from Europe “In times such as ours, with increased polarization, populism and fixed positions, public broadcasters have a vital role to play across Europe.” A joint statement, emphasizing the inclusive rather than divisive mission of public broadcasting, will be signed on Friday 19th October 2018 in Potsdam. Cilla Benkö, Director General of Sveriges Radio and President of PRIX EUROPA, and representatives from 20 other European broadcasters are making their appeal: “The time to stand up for media freedom and strong public service media is now. Our countries need good quality journalism and the audiences need strong collective platforms”. The act of signing is taking place just before the Awards Ceremony of this year’s PRIX EUROPA, hosted by rbb in Berlin and Potsdam from 13-19 October under the slogan “Reflecting all voices”. The joint declaration was initiated by the Steering Committee of PRIX EUROPA, which unites the 21 broadcasters. Potsdam Declaration, 19 October 2018 (full wording) by the 21 broadcasters from the PRIX EUROPA Steering Committee: In times such as ours, with increased polarization, populism and fixed positions, public broadcasters have a vital role to play across Europe. It has never been more important to carry on offering audiences a wide variety of voices and opinions and to look at complex processes from different angles. Impartial news and information that everyone can trust, content that reaches all audiences, that offers all views and brings communities together. Equally important: Public broadcasters make the joys of culture and learning available to everyone, regardless of income or background.

  • Licence Fee for Citizens Simple and Modern
Licence Fee for Citizens Simple and modern We have long been able to watch television programmes on a tablet and listen to radio on a smart phone. Technical equipment offers an increasing number of functions and changes in the way we use media content. Device-independent licence fees are modern and open to technological progress. For €17.50* per month the licence fee covers all public service broadcasting programmes over all means of distributions. It also ensures that there will be a varied and freely avialable programme for all citizens in the future. Public service broadcasting Independence Public service broadcasting in Germany is an essential part of a modern, democratic society: its programmes play a considerable part in forming of opinion. This solidarity-based funding through the licence fee ensures that everyone has free access to information and enables reporting independent from economic and political interests. Quality ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio offer high-quality-services that inform, educate and entertain: news programmes provide up-to-date and comprehensive information, whilst TV magazines and political talk shows provide background and analyses. Public service broadcasting also represents a unique range of entertainment, such as films, radio plays, TV series, sport and shows. Quality and ratings are not a contradiction, quite the opposite as several media awards show. Variety The programmes on TV, radio and the Internet are as wide-ranging as the interests of those who use them - a large part of the programmes are therefore barrier-free. Public service broadcasting also offers more than just the main channels: such as on ARD’s regional channels, 3sat, ARTE and PHOENIX, and KI.KA as well as on the additional digital channels.

The paper discusses: (1) Structure and framework conditions of the German media (a historical review of the mass media since 1945); (2) Press (including its particular reliance on local news and the creation of the world status media group, Bertelsmann AG);(3) News agencies and public relations work (which insure a "never-ending stream" of information);(4) Radio and Television (with emphasis on the Federal Republic's surprisingly large number of radio stations--public, commercial, and "guest");(5) New communication paths and media (especially communication and broadcasting satellites and cable in wideband-channel networks);(6) The profession of journalist (which still relies on on-the-job training rather than university degrees); and (7) Help for the media in the Third World (professional training in Germany of journalists and technical experts from underdeveloped countries appears to be the most appropriate way to promote Third World media).
