CLASSES AND MATERIALS

All students are expected to participate in scheduled classes on a regular basis. Reading, Writing, Language Arts, Math, Science, Health, and Social Studies are taught at all grade levels. In addition, music, art, and scheduled library times are provided on a weekly basis. Students are required to show proper respect and care for all books, educational materials and property used in the educational process. Reminder: proper care of all library materials is needed, and students will be held responsible for replacement. Overdue notices are maintained by the library personnel and parents will receive bills for the cost of replacing missing library materials. Prompt attention to these matters is appreciated. Equal participation and engagement is expected when in an online learning environment as well.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL TIMES – PLEASE NOTE NEW PROCEDURE

Those students who do not ride the bus MAY not come to school before 7:35 a.m. Buses will be dismissed on at a time with ALL students entering the building through the “old commons” doors (middle of the front of the building) where they will be temperature scanned via thermo imaging. Parents are not to accompany their children to reduce the number of people present at this busy time. Walkers and student drop-offs will enter following the buses and are also expected to use the old commons entrance and should not be accompanied by additional people.

Any student entering with a temperature greater than 100.3° F will report to room 1113 for further health screening per the COVID recommendations from the Sheboygan County Health Department.

Classroom instruction begins at 7:50 a.m.

Elementary classroom instruction ends at 3:00 p.m.

Walkers will be dismissed first at 3:00 p.m.with the expectation that they will walk directly to their destination and do not re-enter the building. At 3:05, any student riding home with a pre-arranged High School-aged driver will be dismissed. These students should have a pre-determined meeting location OUTSIDE the building to meet with their

5 Random Lake Elementary School 2020-2021 School Year

High School-aged driver to avoid congestion in hallways. Outside the old commons area is suggested. Bus riders will await loading of their bus in the cafeteria. Loading will take place in the back of the school building. Loading will be by family group and load the back of the bus to the front of the bus.

Parent pick-up student will load in the front of the building following the dismissal of the walkers and High School-aged driver/passenger student.

Parents or other family members should NOT come into the building at the beginning or end of the school day to escort or wait for children, This is to decrease the number of people present at these busy times of the day.

VISITOR PASSES

As always, we welcome visitors to the school we are so proud to share. We are requiring all visitors, including parents and guests, to register in the office when arriving at school. Simply ring our doorbell in the vestibule, smile (video monitored) and identify yourself to be buzzed in. After signing in, visitor will be temperature checked and then asked to use a visitor’s pass to wear while in any part of the school. We ask that you please return to the office and sign out before leaving. The only entrances available during school hours are located at the elementary and high school doors.

ANIMALS IN THE CLASSROOM

Visiting and residential pets in the classroom may be a part of elementary school instruction. Please keep the following guidelines in mind when bringing animals into the classroom:

The principal’s permission is required before bringing any animal into the school.

Reminder: All visitors, including those with pets, must register in the office upon arrival and are subject to temperature check.

ATTENDANCE AND TRUANCY

All absences should be reported PRIOR to 8:00 a.m. by calling 994–4344. Students who arrive between one (1) and thirty (30) minutes after the tardy bell will be considered tardy. Students who arrive between thirty-one minutes and three and a half (3 ½) hours late will be considered a half-day (½) day absent. Students who are absent more than three and a half hours (3 ½) hours are considered a full day absent. Students who leave between one (1) and thirty (30) minutes early are considered left early.

6 Random Lake Elementary School 2020-2021 School Year

If no phone contact is complete on the day of the absence, the student must present a note from his/her parent or legal guardian to the office on the day of the return. The note must state the day the student was absent and the reason for the absence. The absence will be regarded as unexcused until the note is received, or we have talked with a parent / guardian. This needs to be done in a timely manner so that our attendance records are maintained accurately. Notes and calls from parents regarding any student absence (full or part day) should be directed to the office, not classroom teachers.

Excused Absences

The following conditions may excuse a student from school attendance (excused absences are still recorded as absences so that accurate attendance records are maintained): • Personal illness or injury (a doctor’s certificate may be required by the school principal). • Family illness – an emergency situation requiring the student to be absent from school. • Quarantine of the home by local health officials. • Death of a relative (limited to three (3) days unless reasonable cause can be shown for a longer absence). • Observance of a religious holiday consistent with student’s established creed or belief. Students who accumulate five or more days or partial days of unexcused absences in one semester will meet the criteria of truancy under State Law (§ 118.15(5)(a)) and may be subject to truancy proceedings.

All students arriving tardy are required to sign in at the office and be temperature checked before proceeding to their classroom. It is preferred that parents sign their late arriving students in at the office. When signing in a late student, parents are ased not to accompany their child to class. Likewise, all students leaving school before the scheduled time of dismissal are required to have a parent sign them out in the office. Parents who arrive to dismiss students from school for appointments, for example, shall enter the building to sign their child out of school.

It should also be noted that when a student stays home from school, that student is not to attend any after school activities on that day.

CANCELLATION DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

The following radio and TV stations will announce the cancellation of school due to inclement weather: Radio Television Local Channel WTMJ (620) WTMJ NBC () 4 WHBL (1330) WITI FOX (Milwaukee) 6 WIBD (1470) WISN ABC (Milwaukee) 12

STUDENT DROP OFF / PICK UP

Parents or their designees are asked to be patient and allow the school buses to off-load prior to dropping your child off at school. This will help reduce the number of students entering the building at any given time. NO PARKING STANDING OR STOPPING OF VEHICLES IS ALLOWED IN DESIGNATED BUS ZONES WHILE BUSES ARE OFF-LOADING. The driver of any vehicle parking, standing, or stopping will be asked to immediately move the vehicle for safety purposes. You are encouraged to park along Random Lake Road while waiting for the buses to finish off-loading. Students are expected to use the sidewalks whenever possible and will not be allowed to walk through the parking lot. NO student will be allowed into the building prior to 7:30. There will be no supervision provided prior to this time.

At the conclusion of the school day, students are to be picked up beginning at approximately 3:10 p.m in the from the parking lot fence gate on the north side of the building. Students are expected to use the sidewalks whenever possible and will not be allowed to walk unaccompanied through the parking lot.

Re-entry into the building is discouraged as again, no supervisions, unless otherwise arranged, will be provided after 3:10 p.m.

There are signs posted regarding times for student drop-off and pick-up. These signs caution drivers that there is no “Stopping, Standing, or Parking” in posted areas. According to the Sheboygan County Sheriff Department, stopping is when a vehicle comes to a stop, standing is when a vehicle has come to a stop and the engine is running (this is the typical action during a drop-off). Parking is when a vehicle is stopped, placed in park, with the engine on or off. The problem in the past has been with students being dropped off while the busses are arriving.

BUS CARDS

Bus Cards are no longer available due to the need to limit the number of riders on each bus.

BUS PASSES

If seats are available on the bus needed, students may obtain a bus pass to ride a bus other than their assigned bus only when parents provide a written request. Students who are not bussed and who do not have a bus card will not be issued bus passes. The number of additional students riding the bus to the same location may be limited and parents are asked to confirm the availability of seats on the bus with the bus company by calling 994- 9441. Bus passes must be issued the morning of the request in the elementary office.

RECESS

Recess times vary by grade level. It is important that your child have appropriate attire for recess. Slip-on-shoes and flip flops are not suitable for recess activities. In autumn and spring, a jacket or sweatshirt may be all that is needed. In the winter months, each child is expected to wear suitable winter gear such as boots, snow pants, a jacket, mittens/gloves, and a hat. Please make sure your child has the appropriate attire for recess outdoors. There may be situations when an indoor recess is given due to weather or other circumstances.

The number of students out for recess at any given time will be closely monitored to avoid large groups out at once.

No child will be allowed to stay in for recess without a note from a DOCTOR or CLINIC. *************************************************

STUDENT DRESS / DRESS CODE

Students are expected to dress appropriately for school. Proper dress is the responsibility of the students and their parents. The school also has the responsibility to establish dress standards that promote a positive and proper learning environment. Rules pertaining to student attire are necessary in order to maintain decorum and academic atmosphere.

Students are not to wear clothes that are distracting, cause classroom disruption, or are inappropriate for the school setting. To stay consistent, clothing that displays profanity or advertises alcohol, tobacco or other drugs will not be permitted. In addition, clothing that is distracting due to its revealing nature is considered inappropriate. Students wearing clothing that exposes midriff or undergarments while standing upright and students wearing spaghetti straps will be asked to change into appropriate attire.

HATS IN SCHOOL

Students are not permitted to wear hats while in school during the course of the school day. Any staff member observing a student wearing a hat is to ask that student to remove his / her hat. Headwear worn for religious significance will be allowed.

CLASS DISRUPTIONS

The school district is committed to maintaining an orderly academic atmosphere. Teachers create a positive learning climate for students in the classroom and maintain proper order. Students are expected to behave in the classroom in such a manner that allow teachers to effectively carry out their lesson plans and for students to participate in the classroom learning activities. Students are expected to abide by all rules of behavior established by the Board of Education, administration and their teachers.

Student behavior that is disruptive will not be tolerated. Any student who engages in such behavior, as defined by school board policy 447 is subject to progressive discipline which may include removal from class

Students are reminded that proper behavior in school is expected. *It is the RAM WAY.* Students who display frequent behavior disruptions within the school setting that interfere with others' rights to an education may receive an Office Discipline Referral (ODR) with additional disciplinary actions. It is the School District of Random Lake's intention that all students feel safe and have classrooms that are conducive to learning.

HOMEWORK

Homework should be a part of a student’s regular daily routine. The amount of homework varies depending on the grade-level of the child but should always include reading or being read to each evening. If your child comes home without homework, you can have them read (book, newspaper, magazine, or any of several child-friendly online sources). Practicing basic math facts (+. -. x, and ÷ as appropriate) is also recommended. The more automatic your child is with basic math facts, the more the concepts of math that use these skills can be acquired.

Homework sent by your child’s teacher is meant as re-enforcement of knowledge and concepts that have already been taught in class. Therefore, homework is practice or in some cases work your child did not complete within the given time for independent practice during class.

Students in grades K-2 ad their parent will have access to daily instructional materials vis Seesaw. Students in grades 3-4 may also use Schoology to track homework and plan for upcoming assignments. For additional information on accessing Seesaw or Schoology, please contact your child’s teacher for further information.

Seesaw and Schoology are the designated Learning Management Systems for the School District of Random Lake. Should virtual instruction be used, these systems are the primary means of accessing online instruction.

TEXTBOOKS AND EQUIPMENT

All students have the responsibility to maintain books and equipment including technology issued to him/her. Charges for books and equipment (including technology) that receive an unusual amount of wear or are lost will be assessed against the person to whom they were assigned.

INFORMATIONAL UPDATES AND HOME FOLDERS

Each classroom teacher will designate a system (often a specific folder) to bring information from teachers/school home on a regular basis. This is how you will also receive field trip and school event information. Please be in the habit of checking this folder regularly to help ensure smooth communications.

Informational updates will be sent home electronically. These may include upcoming events, reminders, or lunch account information, just to mention a few. Please help ensure that the office has your preferred and current email address to make sure you are receiving information regularly. Report cards are also released electronically through Infinite Campus.

INVITATIONS

Teachers are NOT permitted to deliver any non-school authorized materials/ invitations. Students may distribute invitations, but not during instructional (class) time. Please remember that the excitement of receiving or disappointment from not receiving an invitation often becomes a distraction during instruction time in the classroom. Your consideration is appreciated.

Should your child’s plans include friends riding home on the bus, please check with the bus company ahead of time to make sure there are seats available (994-9441). Only regular bus riders and those students with bus cards will be allowed to obtain a bus pass.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR

Random Lake Elementary uses PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). We stand true to three overarching expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. We call this the Ram Way. Expectations supporting the Ram Way are taught to students and reviewed periodically throughout the school year. Students demonstrating the Ram Way (Respectful, Responsible, and Safe) may be awarded a Ram Buck which can be used to enter quarterly reward/prize drawings. Classrooms may also use Ram Bucks for in-class incentives. All staff members may award Ram Bucks as the

The Random Lake School District reserves the right to prohibit students from attending field trips because of disruptive behavior. • Permission slips must be signed by a parent in advance. • Only signed permission slips containing the date, place, time, student name, and the signature of a parent or guardian are permissible. • Permission granted via telephone will not be considered. • Students will travel by school-sponsored vehicles.

14 Random Lake Elementary School 2020-2021 School Year

As an added measure of safety, chaperones for school sponsored field trips will be required to fill out the volunteer disclosure statement (background check) at least one week in advance of the field trip. Respectfully, chaperones having been approved following the background check procedure will be considered to accompany the class. Background checks remain effective for three school years. Thank you for respecting our efforts to ensure student safety.

HEALTH ROOM / MEDICATION

If a student becomes ill, the student needs to ask the teacher for permission to go to the health room. If the student continues to feel ill, school personnel will contact parents.

Students under a physician's care who are required to take medication during the school hours must have the proper forms completed and on file in the health room. School staff will dispense all medication. Please visit the school website (www.RLAdvantage.org) for the necessary medication forms. Students with prescribed inhalers may carry them personally but are advised not to share prescription medication in any form. Students are not to transport medications to or from school.

VALUABLE PROPERTY

Valuable property such as radios, phones, jewelry, electronic games, etc. may not be brought to school by students. The school will NOT accept responsibility for the loss of personal property. We recommend that students who ride bicycles to school lock them to prevent theft.

CELL PHONES

Elementary students are NOT allowed the use of non-authorized mobile communication devices during school hours. Any students bringing such a device to school will be required to power off the device and store it in the elementary office. The student is responsible for claiming the device at the end of the school day and no reminders will be given.

15 Random Lake Elementary School 2020-2021 School Year

TELEPHONE

Office personnel are instructed not to call students or teachers out of class to answer the telephone. However, in case of an emergency the office will deliver a telephone message to your child's classroom.

It is suggested that parents wishing to contact a classroom teacher be prepared to leave a message with the elementary office requesting the teacher contact them at his/her convenience or on the teacher’s voice mail. The best time to reach a teacher is when classes are not in session.

Students are to use the phone only with their teacher's permission and only for very important messages. We do not let students use the phone to ask permission to play after school. Please make plans at home to take care of personal business (Scouts, sports, and other after school activities).

If there are special concerns or court orders involving our elementary students, we must have current copies of legal court documents on file at school. The most current court document provided will be observed for school purposes. Verbal notification of a court order will not be sufficient. If no court documents are provided, the school must assume that parents have equal access to students and student information.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

It is URGENT that we have current and accurate information on your child's enrollment form in the office at all times so we can reach you in case of an emergency, student illness, injury, or other necessity. If you have a change of workplace, address, phone number, baby-sitter, or emergency contact person, please inform the office. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. You may log into Infinite Campus to update information as well.

INTERVENTION MEETINGS

Referrals for Intervention Meetings (formerly known as CARES Meetings) may be made by parents or school personnel. Concerns about academic performance or emotional, social, or behavior problems will be discussed by a group of teachers, parents, counselors, administrators and other appropriate school personnel in an attempt to identify specific issues regarding student academic performance and/ or behavior and create a plan to resolve the problem/concern.

SCHOOL PICTURES

Individual student pictures will be taken during the school year. Lifetouch is the contracted company for pictures this year. Information will be sent home as soon as it is made available.
