In the Multiverse, it is believed that only Earth-2 has fought off the full forces of Darkseid, but beyond the expected devestation of warfare, it cost that universe their Big Three of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Five years later, Darkseid is back to finish what he started, and he has brought Superman back as his herald. Fate, Red Arrow, all seem unable to slow the advance of a new hell on Earth Except that, some In the Multiverse, it is believed that only Earth-2 has fought off the full forces of Darkseid, but beyond the expected devestation of warfare, it cost that universe their Big Three of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Except that, somehow, there is hope: a new hero, an old hero, and some lost heroes have appeared, and may hold the key to the defeat of the dark Superman. A darned good ending to a major arc, well-paced and well-plotted. Probably the best volume of the series so far. It really feels like the cast has come together, and the story felt fully cohesive this time around. If ending each volume with a big twist is going to become standard, I hope they all stay as good. But I do have to call DC out on the blatant false advertising on the cover. See Power Girl in the background, apparently coming to help cousin Kal-El? Yeah, she never actually shows up in the book. He just has so much fun with characters, and evil Superman is a ton of fun. This time we see it all come to a clash. So many people die, and the moments with Kent's father and mother is nailbiting. To a certain extent I feel like I've seen this all before in Injustice: Gods Among Us , but this was still a well-told tale that managed to cap Taylor's run with just two volumes. There was still too much focus on the Superman family, but it was also good to get many of the members of our erstwhile JSA back, which was great, because losing them in volume 4 was its greatest weakness. Though I complained about the heavy use of Superman mythology, that was mainly Loi A good finale to Taylor's run. After vol 4's dour dark grimness I'd just about written off this series. I picked this up on a whim and I am very glad I did. Not only did it finally finish off the initial story line, it finished it off with aplomb. Very well done! And now marks in my mind as writer Tom Taylor as a comics talent to watch. Artist Nicola Scott has grown and matured nicely since this series has started, into a full fledged talent. Now that the initial story is over, with a cast set. Here I must insert my thanks for so quickly bringing back Alan Scot, the gay Green Lantern, always near and dear to my heart. Looking back now over these five volumes and it's updated retelling of the Darkseid story, I have to say, it's probably the best one yet. Definitely much more stylish and sophisticated, storywise than the original Kirby story of the 70s. Nothing will every beat Kirby's art. Most of the great things that began in the previous volume carry over into this volume: excellent writing, clean and clear dialogue, a tense storyline, coherent story- boarding, beautiful illustration The only thing that gets fumbled a little in this collection is the pacing. A couple of times it feels like the action comes to a complete stop just so we can catch up with a dangling plot thread. However, for the most part, this was a very compelling read. The new Kryptonian is hot hot hot. The story seems to get back on track again, and I am interested to see where it goes from here. However, why the hell was Powergirl on the cover? She wasn't even in the book! Not bad, but here we are into volume five of Earth-2 and it's still the same old story. Darkseid, parademons, the World Army, the collapse of Earth's civilization. This story has dragged on for far too long. I'm still enjoying, for the most part, the new iterations of classic Justice Society members, but we still don't know a whole lot about them. So much time spent fighting in this war, there's little time for characterization. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

Superman’s powers include incredible strength, the ability to fly. X-ray vision, super speed, invulnerability to most attacks, super hearing, and super breath. He is nearly unstoppable. However, Superman does have one weakness, Kryptonite. When exposed to this radioactive element from his home planet, he becomes weak and helpless. Superman’s alter ego is mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent. He lives in the city of Metropolis and works for the newspaper the Daily Planet. Clark is in love with fellow reporter Lois Lane.

Introduction “Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman! “ (Daniels, 1998, p. 1-7). Some people might not recognize the reference to early radio shows and cartoons, but most people will recognize the name Superman. Superman has become such an amazing cultural icon, that almost everyone knows his name, and often his weakness, his powers, the colors of his suit and the name of his arch nemesis. It’s part of common knowledge and everyone has been exposed to him at some time or another. Since the creation of Superman in 1938, comic book research and literary studies have come along way. These allows us to more deeply analyze and understand, as well as unravel the deeper signified meanings associated with the iconic Superman (Wandtke, 2007, p. 25). He is seen as a superhero, but also upholds “truth, justice and the American way” (Watt-Evans, 2006, p. 1). Some see him as Christ-like or Jewish, and even as a fascist. He fulfills some of our needs from the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and also expresses different messages depending on the medium in which he is portrayed. There is no end to the Superman merchandise, but Superman as an icon, can change a person.

Contemporary comic book scholarship typically posits this phenomenon as being primarily a problem of dual identity. Like most comic book superheroes, superbeings, and costumed crime fighters who avail themselves of multiple identities as an essential part of their aesthetic and narratological repertoire, DC Comics character Superman is also conventionally aggregated in this analytical framework. While much scholarly attention has been directed toward the thematic and cultural tensions between two of the character’s best-known and most recognizable identities, namely ‘Clark Kent of Kansas’ and ‘Superman of Earth’, the character in question is in fact an identarian multiplicity consisting of three ‘identity-machines’: ‘Clark’, ‘Superman’, and ‘Kal-El of Krypton’. Referring to the schizoanalysis developed by the French theorists Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Anti- Oedipus. Capitalism and Schizophrenia (orig. 1972), as well as relying on the kind of narratological approach developed in the 1960s, this paper seeks to re-theorize the onto- existential tension between the character’s triplicate identities which the current scholarly interpretation of the character’s relationship with various concepts of identity overlooks.
