Francis Lerow, Bishop Ordinary Missions and Decisions, Planning and Money For many of our parishes, renewal tends to be an ongoing affair. We think very hard about our home parish. All of us want our church to have impact on the community and our community to have greater access to worship and the Traditional Anglican way. We depend on our vestries to drive the wagon that ensures that proper planning and resources are available to support the annual plan established at the Annual Parish Meetings. The problem with planning is that it quickly can lose the interest of the members of the parish. It is easy to fall back into our old ways, thinking that the Sunday Worship Service is all we need to bring them to Christ and eventually membership in the Church. Or if we have a young electrifying priest that will lead the way all will be well. It would be nice if it was that easy. But, we all know it is not. So what does it take? What kind of investment of time and resources does it take to really make things happen? What will cause the kind of renewal for which we all hope and pray? The business metric used to determine the effort and cost to sell a particular item of merchandise, as a rule of thumb, is to measure how many times their product gets the attention of a potential buyer.

  • Rev. Dr. Robert E. Shore-Goss
A division of WIPF and STOCK Publishers CASCADE Books wipfandstock.com • (541) 344-1528 GOD IS GREEN An Eco-Spirituality of Incarnate Compassion Robert E. Shore-Goss At this time of climate crisis, here is a practical Christian ecospirituality. It emerges from the pastoral and theological experience of Rev. Robert Shore-Goss, who worked with his congregation by making the earth a member of the church, by greening worship, and by helping the church building and operations attain a carbon neutral footprint. Shore-Goss explores an ecospirituality grounded in incarnational compassion. Practicing incarnational compassion means following the lived praxis of Jesus and the commission of the risen Christ as Gardener. Jesus becomes the “green face of God.” Restrictive Christian spiritualities that exclude the earth as an original blessing of God must expand. is expansion leads to the realization that the incarnation of Christ has deep roots in the earth and the fleshly or biological tissue of life. is book aims to foster ecological conversation in churches and outlines the following practices for congregations: meditating on nature, inviting sermons on green topics, covenanting with the earth, and retrieving the natural elements of the sacraments. ese practices help us recover ourselves as fleshly members of the earth and the network of life. If we fall in love with God’s creation, says Shore-Goss, we will fight against climate change. Robert E. Shore-Goss has been Senior Pastor and eologian of MCC United Church of Christ in the Valley (North Hollywood, California) since June 2004. He has made his church a green church with a carbon neutral footprint.

  • Befriend the Wolf: Blessing All God's Creation
Befriend the Wolf: Blessing All God’s Creation FACILITATOR GUIDE This is the Blessing of the Animals prepared to be used in conjunction with, or separately from, of the 2017 Feast of St. Francis Program, Befriending the Wolf: A Blessing for All Creation. Note: “Leader” can be a Priest, Deacon, or Lay Leader Directions: Encourage/invite all participants to bring an animal, perhaps a beloved pet, to the worship. People who are not able to bring an animal may wish to bring a picture of an animal they love or a photo of an endangered species in the wild. It is important to be sensitive to the needs of those who are grieving for their animal companions. Invite people to also bring photographs of their deceased, beloved animal companions to the service. Setting: This liturgy is best performed outside, in a park or a public garden where it is lush and inviting. Space is needed between many of the animals to provide a comfortable context. Of course, plan where you would need to hold the liturgy if weather doesn’t permit being outdoors. Remind all that animals must be on a lead or in a secure pet carrier for the safety of other animals. Most cities will give permission to use a park provided certain conditions are met. Banners with animals on them may also be used. You may wish to reach out to animal welfare groups in the community and invite them to participate. Optional: Readings for Blessing of the Animals: you may want to have a CD of bird/animal sounds playing during the readings.
