Francis Lerow, Bishop Ordinary Missions and Decisions, Planning and Money For many of our parishes, renewal tends to be an ongoing affair. We think very hard about our home parish. All of us want our church to have impact on the community and our community to have greater access to worship and the Traditional Anglican way. We depend on our vestries to drive the wagon that ensures that proper planning and resources are available to support the annual plan established at the Annual Parish Meetings. The problem with planning is that it quickly can lose the interest of the members of the parish. It is easy to fall back into our old ways, thinking that the Sunday Worship Service is all we need to bring them to Christ and eventually membership in the Church. Or if we have a young electrifying priest that will lead the way all will be well. It would be nice if it was that easy. But, we all know it is not. So what does it take? What kind of investment of time and resources does it take to really make things happen? What will cause the kind of renewal for which we all hope and pray? The business metric used to determine the effort and cost to sell a particular item of merchandise, as a rule of thumb, is to measure how many times their product gets the attention of a potential buyer.

Note: “Leader” can be a Priest, Deacon, or Lay Leader Directions: Encourage/invite all participants to bring an animal, perhaps a beloved pet, to the worship. People who are not able to bring an animal may wish to bring a picture of an animal they love or a photo of an endangered species in the wild. It is important to be sensitive to the needs of those who are grieving for their animal companions. Invite people to also bring photographs of their deceased, beloved animal companions to the service. Setting: This liturgy is best performed outside, in a park or a public garden where it is lush and inviting. Space is needed between many of the animals to provide a comfortable context. Shea, who was then youth director for the Congregation at Duke Chapel, is currently the school’s director of admissions. BEGINNING IN 1989, the Blessing of Animals has been an annual service at Duke Chapel. These services (b&w photos) included liturgical dancers and guest speaker Andrew Linzey, author of Christianity and the Rights of Animals. Over the years, the popular ceremony has attracted pet lovers with snakes, iguanas, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, and other critters furry, feathered, or finned. Caring for the environment has been identified as one of the priority areas for action at Provincial level, as part of our Vision for our church. Yet our vocation to be faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us is not new, being rooted in the creation accounts with which our Bible opens. Here we read that God ‘formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life … and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it’ (Genesis 2:7,15).
