Gracias a este tipo de iniciativas, consolidamos la pluralidad de la oferta musical y escénica de Madrid, a la vez que nos acercamos a la realidad de intereses culturales de nuestra región. Enriquecer el acervo común de los madrileños con propuestas de calidad y accesibles a todos los públicos, es también objetivo de la programación que se incluye en el Festival de Arte Sacro, donde se dan cita las obras clásicas de Bach, Mozart o Rossini, entre otros, y la interpretación y puesta en escena de de nuevas composiciones. A través de la mística que subyace en todas las creaciones, podemos aproximarnos también al legado histórico, monumental y plástico que encierra el rico patrimonio religioso de la Comunidad de Madrid. La programación de “Arte Sacro 2013” abarca más de nueve siglos de tradiciones y creencias, a través de 47 espectáculos y 5 proyecciones cinematográficas que se representarán en 16 municipios de la región. El Festival incluye desde cinco estrenos absolutos hasta cuatro recuperaciones mu- sicológicas de maestros españoles, sin olvidar la interpretación de” El Laberinto del mundo y el paraíso del corazón” con el órgano de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, recientemente restaurado por la Comunidad de Madrid. Las formaciones madrileñas, con una alta calidad, constituyen el núcleo de la progra- mación de esta edición, aunque la vertiente internacional del festival contará también este año con destacadas formaciones extranjeras. Tras el éxito del pasado festival, estoy plenamente convencida de que este año su celebración gozará de un importante interés, lo cual me anima a invitar a todos los madrileños y a quienes nos visiten a disfrutar con su variedad de representaciones.     Los himnos nacionales. Música y letras en creaciones cargadas de significado Por Juan María Veniard, para la Academia del Plata. Trabajo leído en sesión ordinaria del 4 de octubre de 2017. Un himno nacional es una composición musical con o sin letra entonada, destinada a lograr por parte de un pueblo adhesión a su propio Estado. Es también un símbolo que lo representa institucionalmente ante el concierto de las naciones como los otros símbolos que lo distinguen, la bandera y el escudo patrio, que pueden presentar elementos simbólicos y tener antigua tradición. El himno nacional consta, generalmente, de letra, la cual muchas veces está inflamada de patriotismo, pero la música es de características internacionalistas, esto es: música académica occidental –en cuanto a su estructura y lenguaje– que no reconoce fronteras. Ciertamente, en algunos, se percibe un origen, como puede ser germánico, francés o italiano, del mismo modo que se lo percibe en la música académica respectiva. La letra, en versos rimados, es obligadamente en el idioma nacional. En la época en que fueron creados estos himnos, la letra se constituyó en el elemento fundamental y la música tuvo un carácter subsidiario. Pero, con el tiempo, la música fue tomando relevancia. La letra pudo presentar variadas finalidades: didáctica, presentando los valores que deben adornar al individuo nacional; dogmática: inflamando al pueblo amor a la patria, al rey o al sistema político; histórica, recordando los hechos sobresalientes que la adornan; y aun geopolítica, señalando los términos de la nación. De modo que muchas veces es heroica y puede presentar cierta agresividad para con supuesto enemigo (en nuestro himno: “el vil invasor…”).

Many of them accepted our invitation to tell a bit about themselves, so that our alums and friends can catch the en- thusiasm that abounds at this time of year. RELIGION AND THE ARTS Elizabeth Churchill, seeking an MAR at ISM, comes to us from Boston University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. Megan Frank joins the ISM as an MAR candidate from Wheaton College in Illinois. Matthew Haugen is a fi rst-year MAR student concentrating in litur- gics at the ISM. He earned his BA in Classical Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College this spring, and is interested in using this back- ground to study Medieval and Byzantine liturgy, including monasti- cism and mysticism. He is also interested in the relation of liturgy to communal and individual identity, as means for creative expression and social change. Matthew Kustenbauder, a graduate of Messiah College in Grantham, PA, will be studying at ISM towards an MAR. William Ng, in pursuit of an MAR at the ISM, comes to us from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland). Christiana Peppard, who received her BA from Stanford University in California, joins the ISM as she pursues her MAR. Sam Soliman, a fi rst year MAR student, has worked with various non-profi t agencies as a grant-writer and director for the past several years.

    Faculty and Staff Bios: GSW 2017 Tamara Akinbo (AREA II) teaches Spanish at R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem. She earned her B.A. in Spanish and English at Winston-Salem State University and her M.A.Ed. at Wake Forest University. She enjoys discussing pop culture and current events. She loves listening to old school hip hop and 80s rock, reading, watching 80s “B” movies on Netflix, and traveling. She is obsessed with HGTV and the Food Network, but she hates Reality TV. She loves spending time with her son, Ife. Rodney Allen (GSW DIRECTOR) currently teaches English at R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, where he has taught since 1998. He earned a B.A. in English and History and an M.A. in Education from Wake Forest University. He attended GSW in choral music in 1988 and has worked at GSW since 2000. Rodney is married to Robyn Allen, whom he met at GSW in 2000 when they were both TACs. They have 3 children, Lizzie Grace (9), Liam (7), and Connor (3). Rodney enjoys spending time with his family and getting sleep if time ever allows. Brooke Benson (TEACHING ASSISTANT/COUNSELOR) graduated from East Carolina University’s Honors College with a B.F.A. in Theatre Arts concentrating in Professional Acting. In August she will move to Sarasota, FL to be a part of Florida Studio Theatre’s Acting Apprentice Company. She attended GSW for Theatre in 2013 and this will be her second summer working as a Theatre TAC. She loves Jimmy Buffett, is a total bookworm, a nap enthusiast, and will talk passionately about Shakespeare if provoked.
