Gilad_art ppt PowerPoint of Poster Exhibit, June 2009 3 <A> INTRODUCTION Dear Educators, We are proud to present “When the Shark and the Fish First Met” - The Gilad Shalit Story. “It’s a simple fairy tale, a story of a shark and a fish that overcome their mothers’ mutual suspicions and fears to become friends. But what makes the story even more powerful is the all-too-real and painful fact that IDF Cpl. Gilad Shalit, who was captured by Hamas terrorists in Gaza in June 2006, is the author. Shalit wrote “When the Shark and the Fish First Met” when he was 11 years old for a fifth-grade school assignment. The story lay forgotten in his teacher’s house until she found it last spring, while cleaning her house for Pessach.”* In a volunteer endeavor, “When the Shark and the Fish First Met” has been illustrated by twenty-eight well-known Israeli artists and turned into an exhibit that traveled all over Israel last year. A book with these artists’ illustrations was published recently and already have been translated into several languages. The story sparked worldwide attention for its charm and poignant message. The story can serve as a backdrop to many potential lessons. In addition to learning about the plight of Gilad Shalit as a prisoner in Hamas’ hands and the efforts to release him, the story offers other compelling educational opportunities, among them two “big Jewish ideas” - The Mitzvah of Pidyon Shvuyim (Redeeming of Captives) and the quest for coexistence. We compiled together from many sources an educational kit for use in your school and classrooms. It includes a booklet and a CD containing background materials, lesson plans, ideas for activities, video clips, PowerPoint presentation and much more. Included in the CD is a pdf version of this booklet for color printing. You can print selected pages for display or the entire booklet. We hope that delving into some of the issues this story presents will create opportunities for students to explore their own connection to Israel and find a creative way in which to express it. The Israel Education Initiative * quoted from an article in the Jerusalem Post (see p. 33) 4 <B> BACKGROUND About Gilad Shalit Gilad Shalit is an Israeli soldier who was captured on 25 June 2006 by Palestinian militants in a cross border raid. He was abducted through the Kerem Shalom crossing (in Israel) and has been held hostage in the Gaza Strip by Hamas since. Shalit, a soldier of the IDF’s Armor Corps, held the rank of corporal at the time of the incident but has since been promoted to staff sergeant. He became the first Israeli soldier captured by Palestinian militants since Nachshon Wachsman in 1994. Shalit holds French citizenship, a fact that encouraged France and the European Union to be involved to some extent in the efforts to release him. Recently, he also received Italian citizenship. Shalit is known to be alive. The Hamas authorities have refused requests from the Red Cross (ICRC) to allow visits by the ICRC. Several human rights organizations have stated that the terms and conditions of Shalit’s detention are contrary to international humanitarian law. In exchange for his release, Hamas is demanding the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, including many convicted of what Ha’aretz described as “deadly terrorist” attacks “Shalit Now” a take off on “Peace Now” logo against Israelis. Personal Life Shalit was born on 28 August 1986 in Nahariya, Israel, and was raised from the age of two in Mitzpe Hila in the Western Galilee. He graduated with distinction from Manor Kabri High School. The Pope's Visit to the Synagogue of Rome Maria Rita Latto (January 19, 2010) Pope Benedict XVI visited the main Jewish synagogue in Rome on Sunday January, 17. He was the first pope in 24 years to visit the Tempio Maggiore, or Great Temple. It was an event that stirred up many debates and tensions not only between Catholics and Jews, but also within Italy's Jewish community. Jewish leaders from around the world traveled to Rome for the German-born Benedict's third visit to a synagogue as pope, after visiting synagogues in Cologne, Germany and New York. It was an opportunity for him to follow in the steps of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who in Rome, 1986 was the first pontiff to ever visit a synagogue. The disappointment in the Jewish community was prompted by the Pontiff's decision last month to position wartime Pope Pius XII closer to sainthood. Some Jews and historians have argued that Pius, pope from 1939 to 1958, was largely silent on the Holocaust and should have done more to prevent the deaths of 6 million Jews at the hands of the Nazis and their collaborators. Jews are more integrated than ever since 1945, and Israel has been relegitimized in important quarters after being in practice delegitimized by the Communists, Socialists, and those media close to the Christian Democrats in the late 1970s and 1980s, reaching the lowest point in the second half of 1982. Yet, because of various factors including the web as well as unwillingness to take things in stride any longer, the organized and individual voices of Italy’s Jews are now often blunt, harsh, and resentful in a way that would have been unthinkable previously. While the Jews are indeed more accepted than ever, sporadic expressions of direct, incontrovertible anti-Semitism have occurred even in the circles of power, and even at the highest levels. The past twenty years have seen a confluence between Italy’s far Left and far Right in adopting anti-Israeli and sometimes anti-Semitic positions. In some cases this has involved tolerance of right-wing Holocaust denial by elements on the Left. Italy’s severely anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic responses to the 1982 Lebanon war involved both global and local aspects. It both reflected Italy’s past and has partly shaped patterns of response to Middle Eastern and Jewish affairs by a sizable part of Italy’s media and public opinion.

Pictures of seized enemy soldiers are always featured in the news media. An enemy soldier taken prisoner, let alone dozens or hundreds of them, is universally seen as a humiliation of the party sending these troops to the battlefield. Whereas taking prisoners of war (POWs) indicates strength and deterrence, their release results from the asymmetry in diplomatic power between the winning and losing parties. Consequently, the issue of POWs raises at least two questions: what should be the criteria for taking POWs during military clashes as opposed to disarming them and sending them off, and what should be the mechanism employed and the prices paid to secure their release? These matters have major implications for national morale during and after conflict. Another, closely related topic is the intelligence value of POWs and their degree of exposure once they are repatriated and can assist their army in damage control and the rebuilding of systems different from the ones they have compromised. All these considerations are further compounded by strong pressures from POWs’ families and, in democratic societies, from the news media as well. Thus, any study of POW-related issues is complicated and highly sensitive. Questions arising from any such study would include military tactics and strategy, ad hoc and long-range diplomatic considerations, a possible price scale for any exchange, and above all, moral and humanitarian concerns.
