Silent Tension and Harsh Debates. The Pope's Visit to the Synagogue of Rome Published on iItaly.org (http://www.iitaly.org) Silent Tension and Harsh Debates. The Pope's Visit to the Synagogue of Rome Maria Rita Latto (January 19, 2010) Pope Benedict XVI visited the main Jewish synagogue in Rome on Sunday January, 17. He was the first pope in 24 years to visit the Tempio Maggiore, or Great Temple. It was an event that stirred up many debates and tensions not only between Catholics and Jews, but also within Italy's Jewish community. Jewish leaders from around the world traveled to Rome for the German-born Benedict's third visit to a synagogue as pope, after visiting synagogues in Cologne, Germany and New York. It was an opportunity for him to follow in the steps of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who in Rome, 1986 was the first pontiff to ever visit a synagogue. The disappointment in the Jewish community was prompted by the Pontiff's decision last month to position wartime Pope Pius XII closer to sainthood. Some Jews and historians have argued that Pius, pope from 1939 to 1958, was largely silent on the Holocaust and should have done more to prevent the deaths of 6 million Jews at the hands of the Nazis and their collaborators. Among the victims there were more than 1,000 Roman Jews who were deported in 1943 from the old Ghetto neighborhood, across the river from the Vatican. Page 1 of 3 Silent Tension and Harsh Debates. The Pope's Visit to the Synagogue of Rome Published on iItaly.org (http://www.iitaly.org) Piero Terracina, one of about a dozen survivors of the deportation, said he would not attend Benedict's visit.

  • Changing Jewish Communities
Changing Jewish Communities Number 66 February 24, 2011 http://jcpa.org/article/the-paradox-of-the-italian-jewish-experience-in-1990-2010/ The Paradox of the Italian Jewish Experience in 1990- 2010 Dr. Ephraim Nissan There is a paradox to the Italian Jewish experience in the 2000s. Jews are more integrated than ever since 1945, and Israel has been relegitimized in important quarters after being in practice delegitimized by the Communists, Socialists, and those media close to the Christian Democrats in the late 1970s and 1980s, reaching the lowest point in the second half of 1982. Yet, because of various factors including the web as well as unwillingness to take things in stride any longer, the organized and individual voices of Italy’s Jews are now often blunt, harsh, and resentful in a way that would have been unthinkable previously. While the Jews are indeed more accepted than ever, sporadic expressions of direct, incontrovertible anti-Semitism have occurred even in the circles of power, and even at the highest levels. The past twenty years have seen a confluence between Italy’s far Left and far Right in adopting anti-Israeli and sometimes anti-Semitic positions. In some cases this has involved tolerance of right-wing Holocaust denial by elements on the Left. Italy’s severely anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic responses to the 1982 Lebanon war involved both global and local aspects. It both reflected Italy’s past and has partly shaped patterns of response to Middle Eastern and Jewish affairs by a sizable part of Italy’s media and public opinion.

The Holy See VISIT TO THE SYNAGOGUE OF ROME ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI Sunday, 17 January 2010 (Video) "What marvels the Lord worked for them! What marvels the Lord worked for us: Indeed we were glad" (Ps 126) "How good and how pleasant it is when brothers live in unity" (Ps 133) Dear Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Rome, President of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, President of the Jewish Community of Rome, Rabbis, Distinguished Authorities, Friends, Brothers and Sisters, 1. At the beginning of this encounter in the Great Synagogue of the Jews of Rome, the Psalms which we have heard suggest to us the right spiritual attitude in which to experience this particular and happy moment of grace: the praise of the Lord, who has worked marvels for us and has 2 gathered us in his Hèsed, his merciful love, and thanksgiving to him for granting us this opportunity to come together to strengthen the bonds which unite us and to continue to travel together along the path of reconciliation and fraternity. I wish to express first of all my sincere gratitude to you, Chief Rabbi, Doctor Riccardo Di Segni, for your invitation and for the thoughtful words which you have addressed to me. I wish to thank also the President of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, Mr Renzo Gattegna, and the President of the Jewish Community of Rome, Mr Riccardo Pacifici, for their courteous greetings. My thoughts go to the Authorities and to all present, and they extend in a special way to the entire Jewish Community of Rome and to all who have worked to bring about this moment of encounter and friendship which we now share.

  • Genuinely Genoa
Genuinely Genoa Genoa, the capital of Liguria in north-western Italy, is an Italian city that has become a tourism destination – almost by accident. Historically it was important for shipbuilding and steel works (since the 19th century), international trade, commerce and banking (since the Middle Ages), and now, because it is a treasure trove of art, history (World Heritage List /UNESCO 2006), the European Capital of Culture (2004), as well as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and Niccolo Paganini, domestic and international visitors are “discovering” this wonderful city. The good news is that the new celebrity status has not affected Genoa and it continues to offer a glimpse into the interesting and unique past of Italy, without bowing to the lure of commercialization. This is a city that works and has captured its important historical role without giving up its personal identity. You will not find a copy of Genoa at Disneyland – and this is the reason you must go! Train Travel through Italy Absolutely Functions I arrived in Genoa by train via Rail Europe. The Genoa Principe Railway Stations is one of the oldest in Italy. It was built in the 19th century when the first railway line in Northern Italy opened. Principe is one of the two largest and most important stations in Genoa. Well connected to France via the French TGV, there are frequent connections with Turin, Milan, Rome as well as parts of southern Italy and Sicily. One of the many wonderful realities about European train travel – is that the stations are smack in the heart of the city.

  • Cardinal Pietro Boetto: a Life of Service to the Society of Jesus, the Catholic Church, and the People of Genoa
journal of jesuit studies 7 (2020) 616-641 brill.com/jjs Cardinal Pietro Boetto: A Life of Service to the Society of Jesus, the Catholic Church, and the People of Genoa Susan Zuccotti Independent Scholar, New York, NY, USA [email protected] Abstract Cardinal Pietro Boetto, archbishop of Genoa from 1938 until his death in 1946, was an unusual Jesuit priest in several respects. First, although from humble origins, trained in seminaries other than the most prestigious Jesuit institutions, and not given to com- plex theological writings, he rose through the ranks of the Society’s administration to attract the notice of Pope Pius xi and be elevated to the cardinalate in 1935. The eleva- tion was in itself highly unusual, given standard Jesuit policy and the expressed reluc- tance of the order’s Superior General Włodzimierz Ledóchowski at the time. Equally unexpected is the fact that the Jesuit Father Pietro Tacchi Venturi, the pope’s liaison with Mussolini, furnished intriguing background testimony about the elevation itself, which provides new insight into the pope’s policies and modes of operation. Finally, Cardinal Boetto was unusual for the clandestine assistance to Jews and anti-Fascists he provided as archbishop during the German occupation, for the broad range of rescue activities he allowed to his heroic secretary don Francesco Repetto and other priests, and for the wide-spread support networks that resulted throughout Northern and Cen- tral Italy. This article tells the story of a competent administrator with immense hid- den skills and profound humanity. Sources include the memoirs of Boetto’s aide, Brother Giovanni Battista Weidinger; a biography by his associate Father Arnaldo Lanz; testimony by don Francesco Repetto; documents in the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu in Rome and the Archivio Diocesano di Genoa; and secondary studies by historians interested in the Second World War and the rescue of Jews in Genoa.

  • Western Europe
Western Europe Great Britain T JLHE GENERAL election in March 1966 returned the Labor party to power with a working majority of 100, as against the knife-edge margin of three which had forced Prime Minister Harold Wilson to rely on Liberal sup- port during the previous year. The election was fought out between the party leaders on national television. Local issues and candidates counted for less than ever before. Despite a detailed and appealing platform, Edward Heath, the new Con- servative leader failed to live down the distaste of the electorate for his party's choice of Sir Alec Douglas-Home as its previous leader. Harold Wil- son received credit for 15 months of skillful government with an active but moderate legislative program. A seamen's strike during the summer, rising home demand, and overheat- ing of the economy precipitated severe balance-of-payments difficulties and devaluation rumors. These were dealt with by very stringent and unpopular deflationary measures. Large tax increases, budgetary expenditure reductions, and orthodox financial restraints were coupled with new laws prohibiting price and wage rises. By year's end, unemployment had risen and business profit- ability had declined, the booming prosperity of the Southeast being less af- fected than that of the areas dependent on engineering and heavy industry. The new tax increases can be expected to bite hard into British domestic prosperity in 1967. Large finds of natural gas were made under the North Sea and the York- shire mainland, promising Britain a major relief from her dependence on imported fuel. New antitrust laws were passed requiring the prior consent of the Mo- nopolies Commission for any large business merger.
