PRIVATE CLIENTS There’s never been a better time to talk about philanthropy A publication in partnership with The Sunday Times Giving List 2020 May 2020 THE SUNDAY TIMES GIVING LIST Since 2005, we’ve partnered with The Sunday Times to produce the Giving List, part of the annual Rich List, which celebrates the incredible work of philanthropists in Britain. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious impact on our way of life, the global economic situation and not least for the UK Charity Sector whose role is more important than ever. With charities facing a grave future, philanthropy has in our living memory never had a more important role supporting the fabric that holds society together. This special edition of The Sunday Times Giving List gives an insight into the top 200 philanthropists in the UK but also a separate section that chronicles gifts or pledges in the past few weeks for Coronavirus – whether for PPE, vaccine research, economic relief. key findings In comparison to last year we have seen a 15.7% decrease in donations which totalled £3.16 billion. This is also reflected in CAF’s Annual Giving research where we have seen that the proportion of people giving money to charity is in steady decline. Last year’s uncertainty around Brexit may have played a role in the decline in giving. However, while fewer people are giving, those who do are giving larger amounts. Compared to last year, the number of HNWIs giving 1% of their wealth to charity has remained the same at 72 whilst charitable assets have grown by 3.6% to £23.56 billion. This year ranks Lord Sainsbury as the most generous philanthropist, giving away more than one third of this wealth to charitable causes. 2 Top 5 philanthropists 2020 Name Wealth (£) Donations (£)
