GREKOVA TO LIUDMILA ULITSKAIA Benjamin Massey Sutcliffe, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2004 Gender and byt (everyday life) in post-Stalinist culture stem from tacit conceptions linking the quotidian to women. During the Thaw and Stagnation the posited egalitarianism of Soviet rhetoric and pre-exiting conceptions of the quotidian caused critics to use byt as shorthand for female experience and its literary expression. Addressing the prose of Natal'ia Baranskaia and I. Grekova, they connected the everyday to banality, reduced scope, ateleological time, private life, and anomaly. The authors, for their part, relied on selective representation of the quotidian and a chronotope of crisis to hesitantly address taboo subjects. During perestroika women’s prose reemerged in the context of social turmoil and changing gender roles. The appearance of six literary anthologies gave women authors and Liudmila Petrushevskaia in particular a new visibility. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Maddening Truths: Literary Authority and Fictive Authenticity in Francophone and Post-Soviet Women’s Writing A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by Melanie Veronica Jones 2021 © Copyright by Melanie Veronica Jones 2021 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Maddening Truths: Literary Authority and Fictive Authenticity in Francophone and Post-Soviet Women’s Writing by Melanie Veronica Jones Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature University of California, Los Angeles, 2021 Professor David MacFadyen, Co-Chair Professor Laure Murat, Co-Chair At the start of the “post-truth” era, women writers in post-colonial France and post-Soviet Russia were searching for a strategy to respond to the crises of authority and authenticity unfolding around them. Linda Lê, Gisèle Pineau, Ludmilla Petrushevskaya, and Anna Starobinets exploit the ambiguity of literary madness to destabilize traditional sites of knowledge and work towards new conceptions of truth. All four women’s works have traditionally been approached as narratives of trauma, detailing the ravages of mental illness or cultural upheaval. This dissertation argues that they instead work to expose the irreconcilability of medical, sociological, and spiritual authorities, forcing readers to constantly question who (if anyone) can be considered trustworthy and which ii (if any) perspective can be declared reliable. The texts provide fictional reference points, like intertextual allusions and meta-literary framing, as the surest way for readers to anchor their assumptions. Linda Lê’s autofictional text Calomnies and Gisèle Pineau’s autobiographical novel Chair Piment depict a Francophone world wracked with social fractures in the wake of decolonization and economic crisis: amidst the splintering chaos, literature acts as a tenuous web holding contradictory discourses in suspension. -

Russian Literature in the Post-Soviet Era and Japanese Readers Twenty years have passed since the Soviet Union disintegrated, and today, in this symposium, some of the changes in Russian literature and culture over this 20-year period will be discussed. The Japanese had some opportunities to discuss Russian literature in the post-Soviet period. For example, in 1996, Quo Vadis Russia, a large symposium on Russian culture, history, and society, was held at the University of Tokyo. Russian writers Fasil Iskander and Alexander Genis participated in this event. This symposium was so remarkable that a special issue of the well-known Japanese journal Gendai Shiso (Contemporary Philosophy) was dedicated to it (1997, No.4). Unfortunately, this symposium left a vague impression, as nobody could know “Quo Vadis Russia” or anticipate Putin’s regime. Now it can be said that a turning point in Russian literature was embodied in this symposium. One of the great Soviet writers, Iskander, made an appearance during it, and Genis discussed the most famous writer of the new generation, Victor Pelevin. Two years later, Vladimir Sorokin’s splatter novel Roman (1994) was translated into Japanese by Tetsuo Mochizuki, and the Japanese could get a taste of contemporary Russian literature. In addition to this translation, famous conceptualists from Moscow visited Japan during these times, and their school became popular in Japan, where Ilya Kabakov gave numerous presentations of his works. -

The Nonsovereign Subject and Sexual Violence in Contemporary North American and Russian Culture by Irina Sadovina A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Irina Sadovina 2018 The Nonsovereign Subject and Sexual Violence in Contemporary North American and Russian Culture Irina Sadovina Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto 2018 Abstract Through stories about sexual violence, societies confront the condition of nonsovereignty that underlies the reality of suffering, self- and other-inflicted, in the lives of sexed beings. Analyzing theoretical, fictional, and popular media texts, written in the United States, Canada, and Russia from the 1980s to the 2010s, this dissertation formulates a structural approach to narratives about sexual violence and nonsovereignty. This approach avoids naturalizing the opposition between the “progressive” West and “traditional” Russia, enabling more informed discussions of cultural narratives about sexual violence and a more critical use of the discursive tools available for dealing with it. I identify three modes of approaching the problem of sexual violence: reparative, radical and prosaic. These modes shape subject positions and patterns of power relations. Each chapter analyzes the structure of a particular mode, its manifestations in cultural myths and in specific texts, and ultimately, its limitations. Chapter 1 discusses the reparative mode, which aims to heal the subject or the world, and its manifestations: the Western speakout model in Sapphire’s Push (1996) and Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak (1999), and the Russian ideal of kenosis in Viktor ii Astafiev’s “Lyudochka” (1989) and Guzel Yakhina’s Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes (2015). -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis discusses and evaluates women and violence in Russian prose fiction after World War II (particularly from the 1970s to the 1990s), including the violence affecting or perpetrated by women. Using representative works and authors, I explore five major ways of viewing textual violence; authorial and narratorial judgements offered about the events related are of particular interest. By drawing on a rich historical, cultural and literary context, I highlight the significance of violence as a motif in recent Russian literature. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on images of women and the depiction of violence in the novels of Vladimir Nabokov, ranging from the utilization of violence as cliché, drawing on cinematic conventions; to an exploration of text as apologia for brutality; to the consequences of muddling imagination and ‘reality’. -
