Phil will help you harness up in safety gear and then guide you on all fours through a narrow opening and along the gangways to explore the hidden place that makes the exhibit space work. Please note that the winning bidder must be physically capable of crawling through small spaces and comfortable with heights. This experience is for one or two people max. #1056 $200 Basket of Glass Fishing Floats DONOR: Alan Rammer

Starting around 1910 glass floats were used by Japanese fisherman to float their nets between 1910-1950s. These floats were hand-blown of any recycled glass, especially sake bottles, thus the different colors with ambers, olive greens and pure blues uncommon. The dark olives are the oldest, aging in the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Floats take a minimum of 4 years to drift to this country from Japan, and estimates indicate 40% drift forever in the Japanese current. All of these floats were collected on beaches in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Included are 2 wooden floats (1880-1910 Japan); 2 rolling pin glass floats for octopus fishing (Japan); 5 small herring floats (Japan); 1 brown glass for salmon fishing (1930s-1940s by NW Glass Co. Seattle); 1 dark green 3-piece mold (Korean); 2 orange-size floats for salmon fishing (Japan); 1 dark green grapefruit-size float for salmon fishing (Japan).

Join WDFW Shellfish biologists aboard their 36' Research Vessel conducting crab or shrimp fisheries tests. Join in the work or just observe as the crew sets/pulls traps, records catch data, and measures animals. Work is performed throughout the southern Salish Sea from March-September. Ride-Along date must be coordinated with WDFW staff and is part of the normal work schedule. All test-fishery work is weather dependent.
