Marilyn’s Musings

The week-end of 11 th and 12 th June will see any number of street parties and cream teas around the country and commonwealth celebrating the official 90 th birthday of our earthly monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

Whether or not you are a Royalist, you cannot help but stand in awe of this remarkable woman, the longest reign- ing British Monarch of all time, who at the age of 90, still works over 40 hours a week fulfilling her oath - “ I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the ser- vice of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”

Until recently we have only seen glimpses of her, but the documentary ‘The Queen at 90’ narrated by Prince Charles, showing private home mov- ies, gave us a privileged insight into the woman who is not only our Mon- arch, but also a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

So what is it that gives her the strength, the ability to engage with people of all ages, of all faiths and none, from across the globe? Sally and Ray Tomlins’ St Saviours’ Flower Show exhibit

The answer can be found in her From the Editor Christmas Day messages, summed up in this one from 2002 – “ I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide Weddings. They seem to be back in fashion this year. After quite a few lean years, our me through the good times and the group of Churches has about 16 booked for this year, 9 of them at St. Wyllow. A statement of love and know that the only way to live my life commitment from the couple involved. is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that It gives families something out of the ordinary to talk about - hats, caterers, wedding cars, the day brings, and to put my trust in confetti, hymns, who to invite (and not), champagne and food. It's all about tradition and God...I draw strength from the mes- above all it says something about faith in the future and celebrating life. sage of hope in the Christian gospel”. We wish them all luck, health and endless happiness. Romantic it maybe - and why not !

Just as Prince Charles gave us oppor- tunity to see what our Queen is really like, so Jesus gives us opportunity to see what God is really like - the Queen’s Christmas message in 2012 IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS reminded us that “God sent his only AND CONTRIBUTORS son ‘to serve, not to be served’. He re- stored love and service to the centre of Due to clashes with the present our lives in the person of Jesus Christ”. Greetings from Nigeria. Life is very busy and we praise God for His help and your concern and prayers. Both of us have been down with various infections but praise God for feeling a lot better. Legs, Legs, Legs! Bean’s Legs 4 Africa

Some months ago, back in the winter, in a moment of madness, Bean Downes thought it would be a good idea to run a marathon, at Conis- ton in the Lake District, on her birthday – 5 th June. Now the date is looming and the prospect is daunting.

Bean has signed up to support the charity Legs for Africa through sponsorship of her run. Legs 4 Africa take prosthetic legs from the UK, where they can’t be reused or recycled due to British legislation, to Africa where they can and do totally transform the lives of amputees. We are fortunate here that prosthesis is viable for amputees whereas in much of Africa this simply isn’t an option, so people just have to make do . . . while we waste over 5000 prosthetic legs each year – some rarely used and some even unused if they’ve been misfitted.

It takes a huge amount of effort, both mental and physical, to run a marathon. If you would like to support Bean by sponsoring her effort please follow this link https://www.youcaring.com/legs-4-africa-565370
