Welcome on board Profl ight

Dear Customer,

Aviati on is a young industry, the Wright Brothers made the fi rst controlled powered fl ight in 1903. A lot has happened in 118 years and the industry has had to cope with many crises: two world wars, the Cold War, the advent of hijacking, oil price shocks and then 9/11. This is a dynamic industry and all these setbacks have been weathered and the industry has oft en had to adapt itself to cope with a new reality.

Few will dispute the fact that the coronavirus pandemic has now become the toughest crisis that the airline Industry has had to adapt to. The impact has been enormous on every sector of this great industry: airlines, airports, manufacturers, fuel companies and countless support businesses. Job losses have been enormous and the outlook remains extremely uncertain.

Aviati on is by nature a very connected industry. Therefore the Zambian industry has felt all the above shocks and perhaps more so as a key ingredient of the industry in Zambia is internati onal tourism during our dry season; this sector has all but vanished and will take ti me to recover. On a positi ve note, this has been a good ti me to be small rather than large. Traditi onal wisdom in the aviati on industry held that this is an industry where size matt ers, everything has been about economies of scale. COVID-19 has knocked this on its head and small airlines have been able to adjust more quickly to the new reality than large airlines with hundreds of planes and thousands of employees. In South Africa, the two largest airlines went into business rescue and if SAA does re-emerge it will be a shadow of its former self.

At Profl ight Zambia we have been forced to adapt and have had to downsize and reduce capacity to match the changing market. Even though internati onal tourism has disappeared in the short term we have been able to conti nue to keep vital domesti c links open. The Zambian economy conti nues to operate and the mining industry conti nues to be our backbone, so we conti nue to keep the fl ights to Ndola and Solwezi open. At the same ti me, even though domesti c tourism has been hard hit by the pandemic a number of hotels and lodges have remained open and Profl ight has conti nued to keep fl ights operati ng to Mfuwe and Livingstone. Domesti c tourism is important to Profl ight and Zambia as we believe that it will recover quicker than internati onal tourism and that it is more resilient to external shocks, whether a pandemic or economic challenges.

Even as we acknowledge challenges we acknowledge wins as well. This year Profl ight celebrates 30 years of operati on. Meanwhile Nkwazi is celebrati ng this, its 50th editi on. Like the airline this magazine has grown, adapted and evolved over many years. We are thankful to the readers that are the very reason this magazine exists.

During this crisis Profl ight Zambia has been able to launch its own service to Johannesburg, South Africa is our most important trading partner and we look forward to conti nuing to strengthen our service on this vital link.

We now have to weather the second wave of this pandemic and it is proving to be more destructi ve than the fi rst wave. I would like to thank all our customers, both corporate and personal, for your support during this very diffi cult ti me and assure you of our conti nued commitment to providing vital air links to connect the businesses of Zambia and the people of Zambia both domesti cally and with our neighbours

Yours sincerely, Captain Philip Lemba

usaka’s Showgrounds holds one of the city’s most surprising secrets. Hidden between industrial and commercial enterprises is a treasure trove of talented Lsculptors; working and exhibiting world class art pieces, mostly from recycled metal. Climate change, conservation, scarcity of natural resources and a great love of the country’s culture and history inspire the city’s sculptors.

Way back in 1989 Zambian artists came together and founded the Visual Arts Council (VAC) to promote visual arts and the development of artists in the country. Since then VAC has striven to create a safe place where artists can work, develop their talents and exhibit. The Henry Tayali Art Gallery on Lion Lane in Showgrounds is the heart and home of this talented group of sculptors.

The gallery is named after late Henry Tayali, a prominent Zambian artist, whose dynamic works gained international recognition. Many prominent artists started their careers through VAC but this story is not about the well-known ones; it is about several undiscovered geniuses. Their work is fresh and honest and will compliment any home or office. Just a few hundred metres up the road from Henry Tayali Gallery are the artists’ workshops. Here a dozen or more artists work in stone, rusted metal, soft and hardwood. The workshop space is another brainchild of VAC, providing secure workspace for artists. They are free to come and go, work at their own pace, create and, also receive gallery space to exhibit.

He now works with recycled metal, concrete and wood and produces practical utensils, furniture and exquisite art pieces. He notices my interest in the work of a mute colleague and comes over to help. Kingsley’s younger brother was born deaf and he taught himself sign language, he explains as he introduces the gentle giant, Donny Blessmore Kaseke.

Donny does not need sounds or words. He communicates through his life-size art works. Back home in Zimbabwe his loving mother and sisters taught him to use his lack of hearing to look at the world with a discerning eye. He consequently developed the rare gift of observation. Donny looks at the world and its ways with an engaging sense of humour and tells the stories of everyday people. He works predominantly in metal and replicates the daily comings and goings of people on their way to work, school, the shop.

Although the figures are central to his sculptures, it is only when one looks at the details that they come to life. A schoolgirl - satchel on the back, book in hand - walks to school reading. By using something as simple as a book he sketches the hunger for education among the country’s youth. At first sight a man on his bicycle doesn’t stir up much thought. But the story is in the detail of the bike: the reflectors, the spikes and the old-fashioned suitcases strapped to “We are humans. We must communicate the saddle. You can get a bird's eye view of the Lehr’s Waterfall, the lovely lake by the campsite, the game, the magical landscape and Baboon’s Castle viewpoint. Oribi Gorge is packed with exhilarating experiences that are built to be enjoyed by everyone who is brave enough to try them out.

A great way to start your day is with a relaxing early morning game drive at Lake Eland Game Reserve. Alternatively, after all the exhilarating stuff you would have immersed yourself in, you would want to kick back and relax, while listening to Dan (one of the most senior guides in the reserve) narrating all the lovely stories about the animals and the reserve. Lake Eland is a place of peace and tranquility. It covers 2,500 hectares with diverse ecosystems of bushveld, grassland, coastal forest and wetlands. I prefer the morning game drives to afternoon game drives because you spot more animals earlier in the day. Which one will you be choosing.

The suspension bridge walk and cave Once you get rid of your fears, you will find that the walk across the suspension bridge is a journey into spectacular scenery. Spanning 80 metres across the gorge and at a height of 130 metres, the suspension bridge offers amazing photo opportunities for those who appreciate spectacular landscapes. Most importantly, it offers a panoramic view of the gorge. On the other side of the reserve you get to do a tour of different viewpoints where you get to see the beauty of the reserve. The views are breathtaking as the walk takes you down to a point where you get to see the river and the gorge in close proximity and get to appreciate all its beauty. What is most amazing about this walk is that it ends in a cave. This cave is said to have been previously occupied by San people and will be a perfect spot for history buffs.

A thorough assessment process helps in identifying key symptoms and potential causes of imbalance to determine the best and the most suitable treatment. Ayurveda places emphasis on prevention mostly, not just a cure – coupled with lifestyle changes and a positive attitude.

In Ayurveda the practitioner not only diagnoses a disorder, but tailor-makes a separate and unique treatment for each and every individual. Treatments are geared towards improving quality of life and to maximising longevity by eating right and exercising regularly.

There are many different treatments ranging from general rejuvenation and wellbeing to treating of obesity, diabetes and boosting blood circulation. There is a specialised treatment for every possible ailment.

Mufulira Wanderers’ net-minder Chabala, voted Zambia’s 1984 Sportsman of the Year, is one of the best goalkeepers to have ever graced Zambian football. Chabala, who started his career as a striker before switching to goalkeeping duties, was an excellent organiser of his defence and was quick to spot danger and was good at improvisation. It’s little wonder most observers say his skills are second only to former Roan United and Rhokana United (now Nkana FC) shot- Godfrey Chitalu stopper, Emmanuel ‘Mannix’ Mwape. Mwape is famed for his appearances at the 1974 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) where the Zambian team finished as runners-up at their maiden appearance at the continent’s biggest sporting showpiece.

Mwanza, the second choice goalie from Kabwe Warriors FC, was steadfast, agile and equally as good as Chabala. His big frame appeared to intimidate strikers when taking penalty-spot kicks.

According to Perseus, finance is nothing but people and computers. And that is exactly what he assembled at Zazu. Before the mobile app was fully developed, Zazu started as an SMS chatbot platform called 619, that taught people about basic finance such as insurance, mobile money, savings, transfers and investing. The platform was founded on one question – how can people get money, keep it and look after their own interests? And that is the question that Zazu continues to find answers to with the constant product innovation and an intense customer focus.

Zazu is unique because it solves a current and historical problem in the Zambian banking space. The historical problem was that banking was not fit for purpose. The excessive fees, the complicated on- boarding requirements combined with the eroding economic climate make traditional banking a tough proposition to sell to the everyday consumer. Perseus and Zazu realized that consumers needed one thing when it came to how they manage their money. That thing was transparency. And with transparency comes power. Power to make decisions and to plan in the face of an uncertain future. Zazu users have full access to pricing on the app, there are no hidden fees and many of the functions that banks charge their customers for are free on the app. Zazu customers today are more informed, more empowered and better positioned
