Several talks about the residence hall policy and information of health insurance and other important information were held to help us to get to know more about University of Iowa. One of the most special and unforgettable event held during the orientation week is that all new-coming international students were invited to the welcome party in the Kinnick Stadium. All students gathered in the stadium to form a giant “I” pattern and sang the Iowa Fight Song. What a warm welcome from the University! SEPTEMBER Student organization fair was held in September. Over 300 clubs and organizations were available for students to join. In this semester, I joined ISORA (International Student Outdoor Recreation Association), OASIS (Organization for the Active Support of International Students) and CDC (Chinese Dance Club). I joined a day trip in Mines of Spain which was held by ISORA in the mid-September. It was a fun experience to me. The view was stunning and I had made a lot of friends from different countries. 3 OCTOBER Mid-terms, projects and assignments came at October. It was a busy month to all the students. While focusing on the study, I also got a chance to perform with my teammates of CDC at the Mid-Autumn Festival Banquet held by CSSA, a Chinese student association. It was an interesting experience to dance and celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with people in Iowa. Field House was the place where we spend most of our practice at. It is a building providing recreational services for every student for free. There are badminton courts, basketball courts, gym room and multi-activity rooms available to students. You are recommended to explore more facilities in the University and make use of them to relax yourself! NOVEMBER Thanksgiving was coming in November! In this one-week long holiday, I went to Washington and New York to celebrate Thanksgiving with my friends. It was an interesting experience to shop on Black Friday. Everything was so cheap! Also, the most important event, Multicultural Showcase, was held on this month by OASIS in IMU. Performance teams from different countries were performing at that night to have the audience know more culture of other countries. I was one of the member to help organize such a big event. 4 It was a meaningful experience for me to work with them. The event was held in a great success! DECEMBER Coming at the end of the semester, final exam period started without a study break. Snow came at December. It decorated Iowa with a beautiful white layer. I was impressed by the breathtaking view of the campus. Followed by the exams were farewells from my friends here. As my second home, Iowa had brought me the most loving and warmest friends. Everyone here was nice and kind. The time I spent here was unforgettable and this semester was one of my best semester in my U-life! 5 PART II GENERAL EXCHANGE INFORMATION Visa procedures 1. Remember to print it out by yourself and bring it to the first orientation ceremony in IMU. I recommend you attend all the talks and activities listed in the schedule to have you better prepared to the new environment. One of the must-go activity is the kick-off ceremony in Kinnick Stadium. There will be fireworks, cheering team performance and band performance. It is such an unforgettable event for every new-coming student! International services & activities International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) organized a Global Buddy program for every international student. You will be matched with a local student from U.S. Many events will be held by ISSS, such as pumpkin craving or field trip. You can make more friends from different backgrounds. Accommodation I lived in a residence hall called Mayflower Hall. It is the furthest hall from the campus. Usually most of the students living there go to school by campus. Most of the residents in Mayflower Hall are international students since we are the last group of student to register for hall. I lived in a single room, with a kitchen and toilet shared with my suitemate. I usually cooked my own lunch before I went to school. Every floor has its own laundry room. You can check the availability of the laundry machines and clothes dryer through a mobile app called HawkTools. Courses registration To ensure the credit of the courses you want to study there can be transferred, you should do the equivalent courses assessments. We cannot register the courses by ourselves. We need to meet the academic advisor after we arrive the university during the orientation week. Be careful when you decided to drop or add any course. You need to get approval from both the academic advisor and professor. Teaching & assessment methods 6 The teaching methods in University of Iowa were quite different with HKUST. The professors always encourage students to answer questions and discuss with the whole class. The professors are also very friendly and willing to help you if you have any questions and difficulties. Some of the courses are absolute grading. Grades are given based on your marks, like you can get an A range if you get 90% marks or above. The workloads of some courses are quite high compared to the courses in HKUST. For example, I studied a film analysis course, which consisted of a two-hour screening session and a film review worksheet every week, two mid-terms, two papers and two final exams (one is take home exam). Sports & recreation facilities Field House is recommended as mentioned above. Some halls have its own gym room, such as Mayflower Hall. Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre is also one of the most famous place for students to have recreation activities. Finance & banking Most of the students create a bank account at Hills Bank, US Bank or Wells Fargo. For me, I chose Hills Bank as it did not require minimum saving and annual fee, but the bank only provided service in Iowa. When I went to L.A. after the end of the semester, I had to close my account and take the cash to travel, which was very inconvenient for me as American people were used to pay in cards. Social clubs & networking opportunities There are over 300 clubs and organizations available for you to join. You can go to the Student Organization Fair to see which one you are interested in joining. Health & safety As an international student, you are excluded from the MMP injection and TB test. You will be required to buy an insurance plan offered by the university unless you can provide a proof of you buying a similar insurance plan which is accepted by the university. The insurance plan offered by the university costs around USD215 every month. Food Meal plan is a compulsory item for new-coming students to purchase. If you live in Mayflower Hall, you can buy a cheaper plan which costs USD725 as you get your own kitchen in your room. If not, you will need to buy the more expensive one, which costs between USD1672 and USD1850. The meal plan can offer you meals in campus canteens. There are three canteens in the university, which are Burge, Catlett and Hillcrest Market Place. The canteen provides different cuisine such as American food, Korean food or Chinese food. You can also use the meal plan to grab some snacks in the shops around the campus. If you don’t want to eat in canteens, you can choose to eat outside. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants or Japanese restaurants. The food is also good but the price will be quite high. Most of the time I cook my lunch in my room like noodles or spaghetti which are cheap and convenient. Transportation Most of the students take Cambus between class or from residence hall to campus. There are many routines provided by Cambus, but only two to three routines you will take usually. You can download a 7 mobile app called Bongo to check the arrival time of the Cambus. If you want to go somewhere outside the campus, there are also bus service which costs one dollar each trip, or you can call Uber which is also quite common in Iowa. Climate The temperature in winter is much lower than Hong Kong. It is usually around 10°C to -20°C in November to December. You are recommended to buy the coat in U.S as it will be more suitable to the climate in U.S.
