Iowa City 101 Final Edits Web Copy Hawkeye Sports HAWKEYE SPORTING EVENTS Hawkeye sporting events are very popular with the locals! Black and gold attire is generally accepted form of dress for nearly any occasion. Most popular sports range from Big 10 football to basketball (men’s and women’s) and wrestling. You will find most residents fluent in Hawkeye sports current events. Bringing up the Hawks, is a great way to break the ice in getting to know the locals. BIG 10 FOOTBALL: KINNICK STADIUM (Seats 70,585 Fans) Hawkeye Football is the biggest area sporting event. In fact, home games often influence the scheduling of other events and sometimes dictate whether or not a store or office is open on any given Saturday between August and November. If you want to attend an event, come prepared. Depending on the season, you may want to purchase tickets ahead of time. Festivities begin bright and early for home football games, with tailgating lots opening at 7:30am. Many fans drive in from all over the state bringing with them a sea of black and gold. Clothing, flags, tents, and more. All parking lots, within walking distance, will fill fast. Bring your own food, beverages, and entertainment. Many bring portable chairs, grills, and even satellite TV’s. If you are the social type, bring a back pack of provisions and walk around. There is a lot to see. Note: Alcoholic beverages are allowed only in designated areas and private lots. You may want to review the guidelines before the event. Basically, it is fine to have an alcoholic beverage, just don’t take an open container from lot to lot. www.hawkeyesports.com/gameday If you are not a football fan, the events may still affect you if you live near the stadium or are trying to drive across town. Plan for longer travel times and try to have patience with the locals enjoying the festivities. On the plus side, game time is great for having stores around town to yourself. BIG 10 BASKETBALL: CARVER HAWKEYE ARENA (Seats 15,400 Fans) Basketball is another very popular sporting event. Both men’s and women’s games are well attended. Depending on the season, you will definitely want to inquire about men’s basketball tickets well in advance of the game. Locals are avid fans, and often decked out head to toe in Hawkeye apparel. Be prepared for loud cheering and passionate fan participation. If you take a walk around the concourse, you will find lots of food vendors. (Try the raspberry soft serve. Yum!) You may also have the opportunity to have your photo taken with our mascot, Herky the Hawk. WRESTLING: CARVER HAWKEYE ARENA (Seats 15,400 Fans) For wrestling tournaments, Carver Hawkeye Arena is converted from a basketball court to a wrestling gymnasium. You will often find just as many fans in attendance. The Hawkeyes have a strong wrestling history and tradition of excellence with 23 national championships and 34 Big 10 Championships. Many Hawkeye wrestlers have gone on to compete in the World Championships and the Olympics. In fact, Sports Illustrated named Iowa Wrestling as one of the top sports dynasties of the 20th century. The University of Iowa has many other teams, such as volleyball, baseball, track, soccer, rugby and more, that are highly competitive and fun to watch. Regent institutional budgets as presented on pages 5-9. 2. Iowa Public Radio budget as presented in Attachment D on page 23. 3. Board Office operating budget as shown in Attachment E on page 24. Executive Summary: Consistent with the Board’s strategic plan to demonstrate public accountability and effective stewardship of resources, all institutional budgets are approved annually by the Board. The FY 2010 budgets for the special schools were approved at the June 2009 meeting. In April, the Board considered key budgetary issues to provide guidance in the development of the FY 2010 institutional budgets. In June, the Board approved the institutional salary policies and received FY 2010 budget development updates from Iowa’s public universities, which included the projected application of one-time federal economic stimulus funding. The Board also adopted a resolution to hold salaries flat in FY 2010 for all non-bargaining unit employees with exceptions being approved by the institutional heads upon consultation with the Board Office. The Board is now asked to consider approval of the proposed budgets for the universities, Iowa Public Radio, and the Board Office. The Regent institutional budgets include two basic types of funds: General operating funds include operational appropriations, interest income, tuition and fee revenues, reimbursed indirect costs, and sales and services revenues. Some appropriations are designated for specific operating uses and cannot be used for other purposes.

Committee Membership Cassondra Boehmer, Andy Cinoman, Anne Gannaway, Diane Graber, Sarah Hansen, Jennifer Joslin, Kelly Jo Karnes (co‐chair), Belinda Marner, Geb Thomas, and Mary Trachsel (co‐chair). II. Introduction Charge of Opportunities for Student Engagement Committee: The committee will develop a plan to create and implement traditions, rituals, and ceremonies to foster and support student success (e.g., Opening Convocation, celebration of completion of first year/rising sophomores, and so on). In conducting its work, the committee will use the SST’s definition of student success at the University of Iowa: University of Iowa students succeed when they achieve personal and institutional educational goals. Successful students develop skills and knowledge, become more mature in their thinking, assume greater responsibility for their own lives and learning, develop understanding of diversity and multiculturalism, and become effective leaders. Student success at The University of Iowa is a shared enterprise. Students succeed by active engagement in educationally‐purposeful activities. Faculty, staff, and students create formal and informal learning opportunities on campus and off, and policies, programs, and practices that foster student engagement. The University measures student and institutional success in undergraduate education by examining a variety of indicators, including measures of learning, persistence, graduation, engagement, health and well‐being, and opportunities after graduation. i. The committee formed and began by identifying all of the Iowa traditions that were currently occurring or had previously happened on campus.
