On the other hand, Turgenev’s personal contacts with Finland were next to nonexistent. He never visited Finland, and neither did he reveal any interest in Finnish culture. Among his friends and acquaintances nobody with a Finnish background is to be found. The sole contacts with Finland to be registered are Jac. Ahrenberg’s visit to Turgenev in Paris in 1878 and – four years later – a letter from a publisher concerning Finnish translations. Ahrenberg’s visit has passed unnoticed by researchers, while Turgenev’s letter in reply to the Finnish publisher has been included in the writer’s col- lected works, it is true, though accompanied by totally erroneous comments. Fyodor Dostoevsky, Vladimir Korolenko, Vladimir Bogoraz, and Semyon An-sky wrote fiction in the genre of literary ethnography. This genre encompasses discursive practices and narrative strategies in the analysis of the different peoples of the Russian Empire. To some extent, and in some cases, these authors’ ethnographic works promoted the growth of Russian and Jewish national awareness between 1845 and 1914. This dissertation proposes a new interpretive model, literary ethnography, for the study of the textualization of ethnic realities and values in the Russian Empire in the late nineteenth-century. While the writers in question were aware of the ethnographic imperial discourses then in existence, I argue that their works were at times in tune with and reflected the colonial ambitions of the empire, and at other times, contested them. I demonstrate that the employment of an ethnographic discourse made possible the incorporation of different voices and diverse cultural experiences. My multicultural approach to the study of the Russian people, the indigenous peoples of the Russian Far East, and the Jews of Tsarist Russia documents and conceptualizes the diversity and multi-voicedness of the Russian Empire during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Aulen 2018 ABSTRACT The Artist as Literary Character in the Work of Anton Chekhov Doctor of Philosophy 2017 Amber Jo Aulen Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Toronto The present dissertation considers the methodology of Anton Chekhov’s literary ethics by focusing on the figure of the artist in his work. There are two general strategies he employs in depicting this figure. The first regards his engagement with typicality in characterizing the artist, and the second regards the reflexivity of the artist, which is to say the artist’s actions on the fictional plane draw attention to the author’s actions on the meta-fictional plane. The concern with typicality vis-à-vis the artist is more prominent in his earlier stories and is the focus of the first part of the dissertation. Chapter One addresses typicality in the genre of the physiologie in France and its Russian counterpart, the fiziologicheskii ocherk. This discussion lays the groundwork for Chapter Two, which addresses Chekhov’s move towards the complicated type in a trio of stories showcasing artists published in short succession in February 1886 – “An Actor’s Death” (“Akterskaia gibel’”), “Requiem” (“Panikhida”), and “Anyuta” (“Aniuta”). The reflexive quality of the figure of the artist, which we also find in the three aforementioned stories, is more prominent in Chekhov’s later stories and is the focus of the second part of the dissertation.

Luckyj Taras Shevchenko is undoubtedly Ukraine's greatest literary genius and national hero. His extraordinary life-story is recounted in this classic work by Pavlo Zaitsev. Born in 1814, the son of a poor serf, Shevchenko succeeded in winning his freedom and became an art student in St Petersburg. In 1847 he was arrested for writing revolutionary poetry, forced into the army, and exiled to deserted outposts of the Russian empire to undergo an incredible odys­ sey of misery for ten years. Zaitsev's re­ counting of Shevchenko's ordeal is a moving portrait of a man able not only to survive extreme suffering but to transform it into poetry that articulated the aspirations of his enslaved nation. To this day Ukrainians observe a national day of mourning each year on the anniversary of Shevchenko's death. Zaitsev's biography has long been recog­ nized by scholars as defmitive. Originally written and typeset in the 1930s, the manuscript was confiscated fro m Zaitsev by Soviet authori- ties when they annexed Galicia in 1939. The author still had proofs, however, which he revised and published in Munich in 1955. George luckyj's translation, the first in English, now offers this indispensable biography to a new audience. We are based in Moscow (Russia) and Tbilisi (The republic of Georgia). We usually focus on presenting the best books ever printed on Russian territory in all the significant fields . This catalogue for Olympia Bookfair is another step forward for us as we introduce the collection of books on Russian Travels in Asia. This collection includes the travel accounts in Siberia and Far East of Russia as well as foreign territories. We carefully selected the accounts that were primary to these territories – the ones that made the real impact in understanding Asian world: like works of Iakinf Bichurin the first Russian sinologist or the story of the fleet of captain Rikord that prevented potential war between Russia and Japan in the 1810s. Apart from travel we concentrate on literature: you can find in our catalogue the first editions of the best works by Dostoevsky and Chekhov along with the very first publications by them. Tracking the links between Russian and Western culture is another purpose of our work – hence the section on the reception of different western classics in Russia. The unknown early illustrated publication of ‘Dubliners’ is the highlight of that section along with the limited edition of the first Russian ‘The picture of Dorian Gray’ (1906). Our usual high-demand section of early Soviet books features books and magazines designed by Rodchenko, Moor and Ilyin. ‘Science and economics’ does have some rather interesting editions of works by Pavlov, Lenin, Darwin and Sechenov.

    FOREWORD We are happy to present to you our catalogue for London International Antiquarian Book Fair 2016. This is our third Olympia fair and we wanted to celebrate it by making the biggest catalogue so far! It is also very diverse - we brought together 80 items on the most important subjects created in Russia. All books are carefully selected for our customers who woudn't be disappointed whatever they may choose. Science category as usual presented by rare influential works as well as Literature: here one can find one of the highlights of our list — Tolstoy's first book «War stories». For those who prefer 20th century Russian writers we prepared not only classical «The Cherry Orchard» but also first Bulgakov's «Fatal Eggs» and one of the early Pasternak's first books, long before he became Nobel laureate.The most impressive part of the list is Russian Avant-garde and Constructivism category with 15 books produced by the best Russian artists like Rodchenko and Stepanova, Zdanevich brothers, Telingater, Petrov-Vodkin, Nathan Altman and even Pablo Picasso. But some may see our Travel category as the most impressive - 15 finest books on Russian travels and discoveries — from the North Pole, through Pacific to Siberia and Asia it goes to Africa and even reaches the Antarctic.
