Ms. Lori McDonald 1000 Taylor Court Bracebridge Ontario P1 L 1 R6

Dear Ms. McDonald,

I am writing today to bring to your attention my private members bill, Bill 76 and ask that your council consider drafting a resolution in support of it.

Bill 76, an Act to Amend the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Act of 1999, entitled Ensuring Local Voices in New Casino Gambling Development Act, 2012 aims to ensure that local communities are given a say prior to the development of any new casino within their municipality.

If passed, my bill would require a successful referendum in the community in which a new casino is being proposed. Bill 76 aims to ensure that local communities are willing hosts of casinos. New casino development is a sensitive issue and it is important that the local people are involved in this process.

As my bill is currently at the crucial committee stage, any support that you or your councils can give to this legislation would be important in ensuring its passage.

Please find the attached sample resolution for your perusal. If you have any questions regarding this bill , or wish to discuss it further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Union 'insulted' by US allegations border agents behind Ambassador Bridge bomb threat

July 25, 2012, 10:19:04 AM

Allegations that disgruntled Canadian border agents may have been behind a bogus bomb threat that forced Canadian and u.s. authorities to close the Ambassador Bridge for several hours are "baseless," leaders of the union representing the agents said. The bomb threat, the second in recent days, was called in around 7:20 p.m. July 16 to authorities on the u.s. side of the bridge which links Detroit with Windsor, Ontario. In a news release issued shortly after the incident, the Detroit International Bridge Company, which owns the Ambassador Bridge, said it suspected the bogus threat had something to do with announced job cuts at Canada Border Services Agency.

With warming, peril underlies road to Alaska

July 25, 2012, 10:19:04 AM Recently, as the road now known as the Alaska Highway celebrated its 70th birthday, cars and trucks flashed along what Wally Hidinger calls "a very good standard two-lane highway" from Dawson Creek, British http://www.multibriefs.comlbriefs/ogra/ogra.xml 2012-07-26 The Weekly Detour Page 20f3

Columbia, to Fairbanks, Alaska. "Our mantra is bare, dry pavement 365 days a year," said Mr. Hidinger, who directs transportation engineering for the Yukon territorial government. Today the Alcan faces challenges that could not have been predicted when it was built. By far the biggest is permafrost, the permanently frozen ground that underlies much of the road.

Work on Alberta's Highway of Death ahead of schedule

July 25, 2012, 10:19:04 AM Where muskeg goes, road building trouble follows - and the water-logged bogland makes twinning deadly Highway 63 something of a construction nightmare. The history of Canadian road building is paved with tales of road building equipment and even entire railroad cars being swallowed by muskeg. Fortunately, much of the work of clearing an estimated 100 million trees (at four trees per square meter) has already been done.

Trans-Canada Highway reopens near Banff after mudslide shuts down traffic

July 25, 2012, 10:19:04 AM All lanes of Trans-Canada Highway have been cleared following the recent mudslide that shutdown the road. Banff, Alberta, Royal Canadian Mounted Police reopened the highway to traffic in both directions, but cautioned motorists to drive with care on slippery sections. Hundreds of westbound motorists were turned away from Banff National Park when a football field-sized mudslide cascaded across all four lanes.

Pugsley shingle recycling turns roofs into asphalt, reduces landfill use

July 25, 2012, 10:19:04 AM Chris Lusvardi writes, "Phil Pugsley has watched over the past eight years as thousands of pounds of what others see as garbage has been lost to the landfill. In that time, while running Pugsley Container, which supplies large garbage bins, Pugsley noticed an opportunity to reduce some of the loads and make a lasting difference. For the past 18 months, since receiving the necessary state permits, Pugsley has made use of previously vacant warehouse space in Decatur to turn old shingles from roofs into asphalt."

Ambassador Bridge threatened again but stays open

July 25, 2012, 10:19:04 AM Three of Detroit's biggest public structures have been the target of four bomb threats recently - all of which turned out to be hoaxes in calls to the city's 911 operators, according to Detroit police. Police said they aren't free to say whether they suspect that the same person, or copycats, made the threats to the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Comerica Park. "It is not the protocol of the Detroit Police Department to close or evacuate any facility," Inspector Donald E. Johnson with the Detroit Police said.

partnership between the Alberta government and Capital City Link General Partnership is pegged at $1.8 billion for completing the 27 kilometers of six and eight-lane divided roadway. The contract includes the design and construction of the highway, as well as maintenance over the contract's term.

Saskatchewan posts record $426 million in construction

July 25, 2012, 10:19:04 AM Saskatchewan posted strong growth in nonresidential construction activity in the second quarter of 2012, with a 6 percent increase from the first quarter, the highest percentage gain among the provinces and well ahead of the 1.8 percent increase nationally. Nonresidential construction in the province totaled $426 million (seasonally adjusted) in the second quarter, the highest on record for that period, according to data release by Statistics Canada.

Rail safety 'sad and despicable'

July 25, 2012, 10:19:04 AM On the railway lines still in use in Windsor and Essex County, Ontario, there have been at least 54 crashes between trains and vehicles at crossings since 1992. The Transportation Safety Board, the federal agency tasked with identifying deficiencies and making recommendations to reduce public risk, has never investigated any of them.

July 2012

Mr. Graydon Smith Corporation of the Town of Bracebridge 1000 Taylor Court Bracebridge, Ontario PH 1R6

Dear Mr. Smith,

This year's Georgian College Golf Classic was a sold-out success. Since its inception 25 years ago, the Classic has raised an amazing $900,000 for student awards and scholarships. By participating in this year's event, you have helped to contribute to Georgian's Power of Education fundraising goal, which helps our students achieve their dreams, as well as enhance economic and social development in the communities we serve.

Funds were raised through individual and team registrations, and through corporate sponsorships (a tournament record this year). Items for the silent and live auctions were donated by Georgian's industry partners and generous staff and faculty members.

Chelsea Dykstein, an Early Childhood Education student, was the recipient of the 2010 Social Services entrance award, funded by the Georgian Classic.

"As a student who was careful in making my choice to further my education, receiving this award was one of many validating and humbling moments since enrolling at Georgian College," said Chelsea. "The recognition from faculty and from the college has given me a deeper sense of purpose and drive to continue my journey in the field of early childhood education. The financial award has assisted me in buying new work clothes and supplies for one of my placements, and also helped pay my way through driver's education so I can become a more independent and mobile young professional. Thank you for considering me a worthy recipient of this award."

On behalf of Georgian College, we would like to thank you for helping us celebrate Georgian's 25th annual Classic and for making a difference in our students' lives. We hope you thoroughly enjoyed the day. Sincerely,

Hank Thibideau, Chair Georgian College Classic Committee YoW' Assoc1atloniu tbe ~tn of yom ~ . '. Smartphone and tablets. are changing the way we commun.icate and get infon.n.ation.WithmiIlipns of apps .available for download what m.~es AMOmobiIedifferemt?·
