This is our first visit to El Monte High School, and we hope you enjoy the contest facilities as much as we like spring weather on the Pacific Coast. Today’s competition will determine who will represent Southern California and Southern Nevada at the Fall District contest in Bakersfield, California this October. We have a great turnout for this contest, and many of you have come a long way to participate. We wish all competitors the best of luck and a wonderful competition experience. Your events team and the Masters of Harmony have done their best to make this Divisional Contest a success. We would like to thank El Monte High School for sharing their facilities and making us welcome. We would also like to thank members of the District Events Team for keeping the contests running smoothly. After the contest, the judges provide their appraisal of each group’s performance in an evaluation session, They embody the true spirit of Barbershoppers by giving generously of their coaching and judging talents to ensure the highest levels of the Barbershop craft are maintained. Each scoring judge awards from 0 to 100 points for each song. Music Category Music is defined as the song and arrangement, as performed. The Music Category judges the arranger's skill and the performer's musicianship in bringing the mood or story of the song to life, and the suitability of the material to the barbershop style. The Music judge is responsible for adjudicating the musical elements of the performance. He judges the degree to which the musical delivery demonstrates an artistic sensitivity to the song's ongoing predominant musical element(s) and mood or story, as well as the extent to which the musical performance displays the hallmarks of the barbershop style. One of the primary hallmarks of barbershop music is its consonant harmony. Thus, the quality of performance depends largely on the ensemble presence, accurate execution, and artistic delivery of the consonant harmonies traditionally identified with the barbershop style. Indirectly, the Music judge evaluates the work of the composer and arranger. A basic prerequisite for a successful barbershop performance is that the song be appropriate to the barbershop style. Performance Category (New) These judges evaluate how effectively a performer brings the song to life. They judge the entertainment value of the performance; the art of the performance. One significant goal of any art form is communication. A barbershop performance refers to how the artist communicates his/her message and vision via the transformation of a song into an entertaining experience for an audience. The performance of a song is the artist’s gift to the audience; whose experiences, memories, and imagination transform that gift into an emotional experience. The performers’ goal is to create a high level of entertainment 4 through the performance. The means to that end are as varied as the personality, abilities and creative skills of the performers. Singing Category In the Singing category we judge artistic singing in the barbershop style – listening holistically for ringing in-tune voices that use a free, beautiful and rich vocal quality, which is wonderfully unified and vocally expressive. Judges in this category evaluate the degree to which the performer achieves artistic singing in the barbershop style: the production of vibrant, rich, resonant, technically accurate, and highly skilled sound, created both by the individual singer's use of good vocal techniques, and by the ensemble processes of tuning, balancing, unity of sound and precision. They listen for a sense of precise intonation, a feeling of fullness or expansion of sound, a perception of a high degree of vocal skill, a high level of unity and consistency throughout the performance, and a freedom from apparent effort that allows the full communication of the lyric and song. Definition of the Barbershop Style Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied vocal music characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in a predominantly homophonic texture. The melody is consistently sung by the lead, with the tenor harmonizing above the melody, the bass singing the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completing the chord. Occasional brief passages may be sung by fewer than four voice parts. Barbershop music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies, whose tones clearly define a tonal center and imply major and minor chords and barbershop (dominant and secondary dominant) seventh chords that often resolve around the circle of fifths, while also making use of other resolutions. Barbershop music also features a balanced and symmetrical form, and a standard meter. The basic song and its harmonization are embellished by the arranger to provide appropriate support of the song's theme and to close the song effectively.     From Director Tom: Men and Friends of the BCC, Thank you for your nice work on our performance at Lockwood. Thanks to 36+ of you for taking the time to come and sing. It does my heart good. I thought we sang well for a very appreciative audience. It was good to have several quartets. Can we have even more than five quartets and maybe some new faces? Thank you also for the nice time at our favorite watering hole. It was nice to be able to eat with you and not have to worry about teaching the next a.m. Let's keep up the good work! From Prez Jack: Our August 21 performance at Bowers’ School Farm was a result of the “Bob Wallace Four” serenading two ladies during the ride in the parking bus from Log Cabin Days. It amazes me how and where the invitations come to sing at the various events that we do. The power of music is amazing. I continue to be impressed by the relaxed manner that the Big Chief Chorus presents itself. You are quite a likeable bunch. Remember that you are a disciplined chorus with all eyes on the director, but being humble enough to mingle with your audience following the performance. Our inauspicious start began 80 years ago as an inward-facing group of men who gathered to sing for their own personal enjoyment. We grew over the next two decades but only began outreach efforts to impact lives other than our own in 1959, when we established Harmony Foundation. We continued to focus our charitable efforts externally by supporting therapy for autistic youth until the late 1990s, and only began our “modern” journey circa 2003 with Harmony Foundation supporting Society singing programs such as the program that has grown into the wildly successful Youth Chorus Festival, noted for facilitating truly intergenerational singing. Fast forward to 2017, when more than two years of member feedback and strategic planning efforts culminated in the announcement of our new vision, “Everyone in Harmony.” Since adopting the Everyone in Harmony vision, the Society Board and Harmony Hall staff have been working diligently to design and begin implementation of programs aligned to the vision.
