2015 Pittsburgh Program.Pdf 1 National Anthems The Star-Spangled Banner O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? O Canada! O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee! 2 We are here to build Bridges to Harmony by bringing the Joy of Singing to Pittsburgh -- a celebration of music for everyone. We’ll see just how broad that joy can be in the wide- ranging kinds of performers and performances in our shows and contests. You’ll see it in our vastly expanded Harmony University classes, with more than 100 sessions covering the art, business, and fun of barbershop. Most importantly, you’ll see it every time four (or eight, or fifteen) people open their mouths to share that joy directly, heart to heart, ear to ear. We’re celebrating the music of Pittsburgh’s favorite son, Stephen Foster, this week, with the release of a new songbook and performances by your Fantasy Quartet and Director. This week also premieres the long- awaited Barberpole Cat Songbook Vol. II, another landmark in the joy of casual singing. Don’t spend so much time listening that you miss out on the singing! Permission is granted to leave your seat sometime! Every time we build bridges between hearts, between generations, between people of all backgrounds, we make a difference in people’s lives. We’re inviting all of Pittsburgh to sing with us, so look for people with puzzled expressions, and invite them to sing a few notes with you. Marty Monson, Society Executive Director, CEO 3 Don Fuson’s Welcome Welcome to Pittsburgh, a.k.a. “The Steel City”, home of The Terrible Towels AND the most outstanding collection of a cappella barbershop singers on the planet! Linda and I welcome you and look forward to meeting new friends, renewing acquaintances with old ones (forgive me if I cheat a glance at your name tag!), and having an opportunity to “Share Your Music” with one and all. We have an outstanding set of contestants this year in the collegiate quartet, quartet, and chorus contests, so cheer for them all even as you root the most for your favorites. Join with me in welcoming the first-time quartets that have worked so hard to gain their place on the big stage. Welcome back the choruses that are returning to the chorus contest. Enjoy the singing and appreciate the work that our quartets and choruses have made in order to bring us world-class harmonies throughout the week. The Convention Team from the multiple Pittsburgh chapters has done an excellent job of collaborating to make sure things run as smoothly as possible. Pittsburgh has some outstanding points of view, points of interest, and wonderful liquid and solid refreshments to entertain every taste. Explore the city during your visit here this week and share what you find with others so we can all discover what it has to offer. And to all our singers, we encourage you to seek out performance opportunities for the community during the convention. But most importantly, soak in our friendships and give back to the communities when you return home, sharing the joy of preparing and performing for those around you. That is what makes us the best! Share Your Music! • MINDSET of a SUCCESSFUL QUARTETTER Barbershop Parts Study - Playlist Observations
MINDSET OF A SUCCESSFUL QUARTETTER Barbershop Parts Study - Playlist Observations Click here: "Parts Study" Spotify Playlist Quartet Information & Listen Fors 1) “After Today” - Remake of the Acoustix version (BHS champs early 90’s.) • Attention to coming in and out of unison, solos and vocal gymnastics in all parts. • Smoothness with which parts hand off the melody to one another, beginning with a very melodic bass. • Color of the releases in all singers, along with a very consistent lift that does not sound contrived at all. • Vocal flexibility - These are all gals in their mid to late 50’s…all parts. While you can hear the maturity (and the benefit of having that experience), you can also hear a vibrance that comes only with vocal freedom. 2) “If I Were a Bell” • Flexibility and lightness (an ease with the vocal approach.) • Strong sprinkle of personality and FUN in it. • Notice the smoothness of the tenor and how she “tucks into” the chords and how she takes on the solo part more like a lead rather than an ensemble (as they all do in this quartet), which are very tightly voiced (notes close together to each other) • The chromatics around 1:40 are accurate and balanced well through all voice parts. The Buzz The • Again, the handoff of parts in shared melody is seamless. They ring, they buzz, hence their name. Listen for SAI Queens the chords to sound rich and full. Conventions in barbershop like bell chords, lead-ins, echoes, etc. are handled with aplomb and consistency. 3) “Back in Business” • This quartet is well-versed in all aspects of our craft.
