Thursday 9 March 2017, 8 pm Kenneth Wood, Molesey Architect ‘A Modernist in Suburbia’ Talk by Dr Fiona Fisher Hurst Park School, Hurst Road, KT8 1QS Kenneth Wood trained at the Polytechnic School of Architecture in Regent Street and worked for Eric Lyons before establishing his architectural and design practice at East Molesey in 1955. His work was published and exhibited in Britain and internationally in the 1950s and 1960s and was critically well-received at that time. Projects from that period include street improvement schemes, church halls and church extensions around Kingston upon Thames and in North London, a village centre at Oxshott, a youth club and a school at Kingston, and a new district headquarters for the Forestry Commission at Santon Downham in Suffolk. Wood’s firm became best known for the design of private houses in the modern style, most of which were completed in Surrey. Dr Fiona Fisher is curator of Kingston University's Dorich House Museum, the former studio home of the sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband, the Hon. Richard Hare, a scholar of Russian art and literature. -

We are blessed to be custodians of such an asset.” With over 2,000 years of experience in welcoming the world, the City has always been, and continues to be, one of the most historic, yet innovative destinations, welcoming business and leisure visitors from across the globe. Nationally, it leads all English local authorities for its use of heritage to foster a distinctive identity and enjoys the number one spot for engagement in culture, as identified in the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce’s (RSA) latest Heritage Index (2016), and in the Government-commissioned Active Lives Survey conducted by Ipsos MORI in 2017. This is the City of London Corporation’s fourth Visitor Strategy, its first was produced in 2007 and its most recent in 2013. Since that last strategy, huge progress has been made in delivering its vision – to significantly develop our visitor economy and, in so doing, enhance London’s attractiveness as place to visit and do business. In 2017, the City recorded increases against the strategy’s baselines of 19% in visits to its various attractions, 107% in visitors overall1, and 109% in visitor spend. Today, the sector is estimated to support over 18,000 jobs in the City. -

Its strategic role in Elmbridge is to prevent the town of Oxshott / Cobham from merging with Ashtead and Leatherhead / Bookham / Fetcham in Mole Valley, though it is also important for preventing encroachment into open countryside. Much of the Area retains an unspoilt and open, rural character, though in some isolated localities ribbon development along roads and the loss of arable farmland to horse paddocks has diminished this character somewhat. Assessment of the Strategic Area against the relevant NPPF Purposes is as follows: - Purpose 1 – Meets the Purpose moderately by acting as an important barrier to potential sprawl from the Guildford urban area, Ash and Tongham urban area, Dorking, and Leatherhead / Bookham / Fetcham / Ashtead. - Purpose 2 – Meets the Purpose strongly by establishing important gaps between a number of Surrey towns from merging into one another. -
