In 1798 John Dean, a Quaker, moved from Westchester to Brothertown, New York, to work for fifty pounds a year on behalf of the Friends in New York City and Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Friends had sent him to the Indians at Brothertown, who were comprised of remnants of the Pequot, Stonington, Narragansett, Mohican, and Niantic tribes of New England. Removed from New England by the Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1753, they had purchased land from the Oneida Indians in 1774. John Dean was soon joined by his son Thomas, who succeeded him as Indian Agent and served in that capacity for over thirty years.

    BROTHERTOWN TIMELINE 1646 Rev. John Eliot plans Prayer Towns for the New England Indians In 1646, Reverend John Eliot first preached to Indians at a site he later called Nonantum ('Place of Rejoicing') in present-day Newton, MA. Making converts to Christianity there, Eliot became encouraged by the possibility of gradual religious, social and political integration of all Indians into colonial society. Rev. John Eliot planned towns for Indian converts, becoming known as the 'Indian Apostle' for his efforts to convert Indians. Waban (at Natick, MA) was the first Indian chief to embrace Christianity, and entertained John Eliot in his wigwam when Eliot first went among the Nipmuc as a preacher in their own language on October 28, 1648. By 1650, Indian converts to Christianity had begun moving to Natick to organize what would become the first of several villages known as "Praying Towns", with the Indians in them known as "Praying Indians". Here, as in all of the Praying Towns which followed, Indians would renounce their native language, ceremonies, beliefs, traditional dress and customs -- effectively becoming 'Red' Puritans. Natick was also the place where young educated Indian men would be trained as missionaries to their own people then sent out to convert more Indians and to establish additional Praying Towns. Daniel Takawambpait was the first Indian minister in New England, being ordained at Natick, Massachusetts, in 1681. Through the next few years fourteen of those towns were established with the total converts numbering about four thousand. By 1674 each of the communities had a school where the Indians were taught to read and write in English.

Box 2206 Fond duLac, Wisconsin 54936-2206 Dear Mr. Richard Schadewald: On April 15, 1980, the Department received a letter of intent from the Brothertown Indians of Wisconsin (Brothertown) to petition for Federal acknowledgment. 1 In 1996, the Department received documents from Brothertown in support of its petition. On June 23, 2008, the Department placed Brothertown on active consideration. The Assistant Secretary - Indian Affairs issued a Proposed Finding on August 17, 2009 (Proposed Finding), which was published in the Federal Register on August 24, 2009. The Proposed Finding explained that Brothertown did not satisfy the requirements for Federal acknowledgment under the Department's regulations at 25 C.F.R. Part 83. This letter constitutes the Department's Final Determination ofBrothertown's petition for acknowledgment under 25 C.F.R. Part 83. Decision After a careful review of all materials in the record, we have determined that the Brothertown was the subject of congressional legislation that expressly terminated or forbade the Federal relationship (5 Stat. 349). Because of this Congressional action, the Department lacks the authority and jurisdiction to extend acknowledgment as an Indian tribe to the Brothertown pursuant to 25 C.F.R. Part 83. Therefore, the Department cannot acknowledge the tribal existence of the Brothertown and restore a government-to-government relationship between the United States and the Brothertown. The reasons for our decision are set forth below. Background The Brothertown has its headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Its current organization was established in 1980.

  • Chilton Historical Mural
    CHILTON HISTORICAL MURAL The imagery in the Chilton mural spans 75 yrs. from 1840 through 1915 and is portrayed in a ‘hand-tinted’ image. This style of imagery was a popular technique of the era bringing color into the monochromatic imagery of the day. Sitting firmly on the Manitowoc, Chilton’s matriarch, Catherine Stanton can be seen prominently positioned in front of the former State Street bridge. Just beyond the ironclad bridge you can see a suggestion of a fading grist mill that the Stanton’s erected and was fundamental in Chilton’s early development during the time. Catherine is flanked on her right by members of a Ho-Chunk family, each of which have tribal beads and patterns embedded into their clothing. INDEX WAMPANOAGS NARRAGANSETTS When the English settlements first commenced in New England, that part of its territory, which lies south of New Hampshire, was inhabited by five principal nations of Indians: the Pequots, who lived in Connecticut; the Narragansets, in Rhode Island; the Pawkunnawkuts, or Womponoags, east of the Narragansets and to the north as far as Charles river;1 the Massachusetts, north of Charles river and west of Massachusetts Bay; and the Pawtuckets, north of the Massachusetts. The boundaries and rights of these nations appear not to have been sufficiently definite to be now clearly known. They had within their jurisdiction many subordinate tribes, governed by sachems, or sagamores, subject, in some respects, to the principal sachem. At the commencement of the seventeenth century, they were able to bring into the field more than 18,000 warriors; but about the year 1612, they were visited with a pestilential disease, whose horrible ravages reduced their number to about 1800.2 Some of their villages were entirely depopulated. This great mortality was viewed by the first Pilgrims, as the accomplishment of one of the purposes of Divine Providence, by making room for the settlement of civilized man, and by preparing a peaceful asylum for the persecuted Christians of the old world.
