1–25 NOVEMBER LONSM_350_ .pdf 1 2018. 8. 22. 8:48 It is my pleasure to introduce to you the 13th instalment of the London Korean Film Festival, our annual celebration of Korean Film in all its forms. Since 2006, the Korean Cultural Centre UK has presented the festival with two simple goals, namely to be the most inclusive festival of national cinema anywhere and to always improve on where we left off. As part of this goal Daily to Seoul and Beyond for greater inclusivity, in 2016 the main direction of the festival was tweaked to allow a broader, more diverse range of Korean films to be shown. With special themes exploring different subjects, the popular strands covering everything from box office hits to Korean classics, as well as monthly teaser screenings, the festival has continued to find new audiences for Korean cinema. This year the festival once again works with critics, academics and visiting programmers on each strand of the festival and has partnered with several university film departments as well. At the time of writing, this year’s festival will screen upwards of 55 films, with a special focus entitled ‘A Slice of Everyday Life’. This will include the opening and closing films, Microhabitat by Jeon Go-woon, and The Return by Malene Choi. C ‘A Slice of Everyday Life’ explores valuable snapshots of the sometimes-ignored M lives of ordinary Koreans, often fragile individuals on the edge of society. One Y will also see director Lee Myung-se's films in the Contemporary Classics strand and Park Kiyong's films in the Indie Firepower strand.

Assignment: MMC/13/04 Collect between three and five pieces of music that might be taken to represent a particular artist, genre, style, or mood and present an analysis in terms of the social semiotic approach to music. You might like to concentrate on one or more of the following: - Timing - Sound quality - Melody - Perspective - Tagg’s Sign Typology Reflect briefly on how useful you found the framework in identifying how the pieces of music you chose might work to make meanings. 1 Contents 1 Introduction 3 2 Background of Social Semiotics and Music 3 3 Framework for Analysis 4 4 Analysis A: Fantastic Baby by Big Bang 7 5 Analysis B: I Got a Boy by Girls’ Generation 8 6 Analysis C: The Baddest Female by CL 10 7 Analysis D: La Song by Rain 12 8 Discussion 14 9 Conclusion 15 References 17 Appendices 19 2 1 Introduction This paper documents the analysis of four sample selections of Korean popular music (K- pop) from a social semiotic approach to determine what meanings are conveyed musically. Each of these songs have been selected as examples of K-pop that have been designed to be marketed beyond the borders of Korea, targeting an increasingly global audience. Despite featuring primarily Korean lyrics, these major hits remain popular among the millions of fans overseas who cannot understand most of the words.

I'll Trade My Soul For You Taeyeon is a girl who has a long crush for her best friend. She has loved her since when she was still in college up until now. She didn’t have the courage to confess because she knew her best friend isn’t gay like her so she poured all of her feelings through the stories she uploaded in AFF. One day a reader named Tiffany Hwang entered her life. They started their relationship as a mere reader and writer. The relationship expanded vastly from being strangers to friends and finally best friends. However Tiffany is not an ordinary girl. She has a gift which allows her to predict future and read people’s mind. When Taeyeon finally acknowledged her feeling for her best friend has changed and shifted to her reader, Tiffany Hwang; the girl suddenly vanished and left her a goodbye message. The story will tell about how Taeyeon tried hard to find the reason behind Tiffany’s leaving and how she would do almost anything just to bring Tiffany back to her embrace. • Juvenile Protection and Sexual Objectification: Analysis of the Performance Frame in Korean Music Television Broadcasts1
ACTA KOR ANA VOL. 16, NO. 2, DECEMBER 2013: 329–365 JUVENILE PROTECTION AND SEXUAL OBJECTIFICATION: ANALYSIS OF THE PERFORMANCE FRAME IN KOREAN 1 MUSIC TELEVISION BROADCASTS By CEDARBOUGH T. SAEJI2 The wide-spread sexual objectification of women in Korean popular music performance subconsciously teaches men and boys that women and girls are sexual objects that exist to please them. Simultaneously sexual objectification disempowers girls and women by emphasizing superficial beauty. Although many decisions related to K- pop choreography, costumes, or lyrics may be attributed to music management companies, this article analyzes how music television programs Inkigayo (Seoul Broadcasting System) and Music Core (Munhwa Broadcasting Company) contribute to the sexual objectification of women through the ways that emcees frame performances and the ways the camera draws attention to sexualized body parts. In August 2012 racy performances by the girl group Kara raised public debate and spurred calls for amendments to the Juvenile Protection Law. At that time commentary focused on the impact of sexually provocative performances on young people. The law places responsibility for monitoring content onto the content producers and broadcasters, yet frame analysis of Kara’s performances, compared with performances in early 2013, demonstrated that neither Inkigayo nor Music Core had changed the sexually objectifying performance frame on their shows. The final version of the revised law, 1 This research was supported by Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Research Fund of 2013. 2 Author’s Note: Thank you to the editor and enormously helpful anonymous reviewers at Acta Koreana as well as friends and colleagues with whom I discussed aspects of this paper: my gratitude to Logan Clark, Timothy Gitzen, Meredith Perry, Jungwon Kim, Jisoo Hyun, Thea Suh, Go Gwanyeong, and the audience for my presentation at the 2013 International Association for the Study of Popular Music conference.

  • General Editors' Introduction
General Editors’ Introduction SUSAN STRYKER and PAISLEY CURRAH ooking back over the first volume of TSQ, including this issue devoted to L cultural production with which our inaugural year concludes, we are struck anew by the depth and breadth of research that can be conducted through the lens of transgender studies. As editors Julian B. Carter, David J. Getsy, and Trish Salah point out in the opening paragraph of their introduction, the question of how creativity expresses itself through the cultural reworking of the material world, including the transformation of our own living bodies, cannot be separated from very general questions about the long arc of our species’ experience, the human enterprise, and the evolving margins of these undertakings. Transgender studies can thus sink long taproots into analyses grounded in the concept of culture, histories of art, philosophies of the body, and theories of representation as it tries to make sense of a contemporary moment in which mass media completely saturated with trans- content, and trans-related literary works, visual media, and other arts practices are exploding into unprecedented levels of popular awareness and critical attention. Significantly, the field of cultural production encompassing trans- topics increasingly includes work that addresses neither the making of art and literature by people understood to be transgender in some sociological sense nor the rep- resentation of such lives in creative work but, rather, that expresses capacities, perceptions, feelings, and knowledges informed, often obliquely and in non- identitarian ways, by experiences and consequences of nonnormative genderings and embodiments. Perhaps transgender creativity can be thought to occupy a chaotic intersection, at which Eurocentric modernity’s ongoing quest for the transcendence of tradition through new aesthetic forms crashes into the limit of our dawning reality that we are living amid what will likely be viewed as the next great planetary extinction.
