The Purpose of This Study Is Illuminating Young Adolescent Girls
SOCIOCULTURAL CONTEXT OF YOUNG ADOLESCENT GIRLS’ MOTIVATION FOR SCHOOL MATHEMATICS: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC CASE STUDY by JAE HOON LIM (Under the direction of Dr. Laurie E. Hart) ABSTRACT This is an ethnographic case study examining the sociocultural context of young adolescent girls' motivation for school mathematics. In particular, I explored various sociocultural influences, such as the impact of class, ethnicity, gender, and instructional structures and practices in school, on their motivation. Data were derived from regular observations in one school of two sixth grade mathematics classes, one advanced and the other regular, and repeated interviews with seven female students and their mathematics teacher. I also used archival data obtained from the participating students, teacher, and many others, including school administrators. The data analysis portrayed contrasting pictures of young adolescent girls who came from different ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds. Even though they shared the same mathematics teacher and school environment, their experiences with school mathematics significantly diverged from one another’s. In general, findings from this study reveal the profound impact of social/cultural capital upon the girls’ experiences with school mathematics, as well as their construction of identities in the discipline. One of the central themes that emerged from this study is a conflict between different ways of structuring and practicing school mathematics. The participating girls responded differently to the cultural environment of their mathematics classroom, and the ideologies that structured interpersonal relationships and ways of mathematics learning in the space. As a whole, their mathematics classes reflected the “justice principle,” which emphasized a clear representation of rules, and equal applications of those rules for disciplinary and instructional purposes. -
ABSTRACT WHAT IF YOU're LONELY: JESSICA STORIES By
ABSTRACT WHAT IF YOU’RE LONELY: JESSICA STORIES by Michael Stoneberg This novel-in-stories follows Jessica through the difficulties of her early twenties to her mid- thirties. During this period of her life she struggles with loneliness and depression, attempting to find some form of meaningful connection through digital technologies as much as face-to-face interaction, coming to grips with a non-normative sexuality, finding and losing her first love and dealing with the resultant constant pull of this person on her psyche, and finally trying to find who in fact she, Jessica, really is, what version of herself is at her core. The picture of her early adulthood is drawn impressionistically, through various modes and styles of narration and points of view, as well as through found texts, focusing on preludes and aftermaths and asking the reader to intuit and imagine the spaces between. The Globalization of K-Pop: the Interplay of External and Internal Forces
THE GLOBALIZATION OF K-POP: THE INTERPLAY OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES Master Thesis presented by Hiu Yan Kong Furtwangen University MBA WS14/16 Matriculation Number 249536 May, 2016 Sworn Statement I hereby solemnly declare on my oath that the work presented has been carried out by me alone without any form of illicit assistance. All sources used have been fully quoted. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -
CA Students Urge Assembly Members to Pass AB
May 26, 2021 The Honorable Members of the California State Assembly State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Thousands of CA Public School Students Strongly Urge Support for AB 101 Dear Members of the Assembly, We are a coalition of California high school and college students known as Teach Our History California. Made up of the youth organizations Diversify Our Narrative and GENup, we represent 10,000 youth leaders from across the State fighting for change. Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. Please see appended to this letter our letter in support of AB331, which lists the names of all our original petition supporters. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples. -

1–25 NOVEMBER LONSM_350_ .pdf 1 2018. 8. 22. 8:48 It is my pleasure to introduce to you the 13th instalment of the London Korean Film Festival, our annual celebration of Korean Film in all its forms. Since 2006, the Korean Cultural Centre UK has presented the festival with two simple goals, namely to be the most inclusive festival of national cinema anywhere and to always improve on where we left off. As part of this goal Daily to Seoul and Beyond for greater inclusivity, in 2016 the main direction of the festival was tweaked to allow a broader, more diverse range of Korean films to be shown. With special themes exploring different subjects, the popular strands covering everything from box office hits to Korean classics, as well as monthly teaser screenings, the festival has continued to find new audiences for Korean cinema. This year the festival once again works with critics, academics and visiting programmers on each strand of the festival and has partnered with several university film departments as well. At the time of writing, this year’s festival will screen upwards of 55 films, with a special focus entitled ‘A Slice of Everyday Life’. This will include the opening and closing films, Microhabitat by Jeon Go-woon, and The Return by Malene Choi. C ‘A Slice of Everyday Life’ explores valuable snapshots of the sometimes-ignored M lives of ordinary Koreans, often fragile individuals on the edge of society. One Y will also see director Lee Myung-se's films in the Contemporary Classics strand and Park Kiyong's films in the Indie Firepower strand. -
The K-Pop Wave: an Economic Analysis
The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. Keywords: Entertainment; Comparative advantages; Services; Trade in services; Internet; Digital music; Technologies; Intellectual Property Rights; Culture; Koreanness.
