LSE International Relations Why did many ‘black’ anti-imperial thinkers and leaders articulate projects for colonial freedom based in transnational identities and solidarities? This thesis excavates a discourse of anti-imperial globalism, which helped shape world politics from the early to late 20th century. Although usually reduced to the anticolonial nationalist politics of sovereignty and recognition, this study interprets ‘anti-imperialism globalism from below’ as a transnational counter-discourse, primarily concerned with social justice, social freedom, and equality. -

Economic Ascendance is/as Moral Rightness: The New Religious Political Right in Post-apartheid South Africa Part One: The Political Introduction If one were to go by the paucity of academic scholarship on the broad New Right in the post-apartheid South African context, one would not be remiss for thinking that the country is immune from this global phenomenon. I say broad because there is some academic scholarship that deals only with the existence of right wing organisations at the end of the apartheid era (du Toit 1991, Grobbelaar et al. 1989, Schönteich 2004, Schönteich and Boshoff 2003, van Rooyen 1994, Visser 2007, Welsh 1988, 1989,1995, Zille 1988). In this older context, this work focuses on a number of white Right organisations, including their ideas of nationalism, the role of Christianity in their ideologies, as well as their opposition to reform in South Africa, especially the significance of the idea of partition in these organisations. Helen Zille’s list, for example, includes the Herstigte Nasionale Party, Conservative Party, Afrikaner People’s Guard, South African Bureau of Racial Affairs (SABRA), Society of Orange Workers, Forum for the Future, Stallard Foundation, Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), and the White Liberation Movement (BBB). There is also literature that deals with New Right ideology and its impact on South African education in the transition era by drawing on the broader literature on how the New Right was using education as a primary battleground globally (Fataar 1997, Kallaway 1989). Moreover, another narrow and newer literature exists that continues the focus on primarily extreme right organisations in South Africa that have found resonance in the global context of the rise of the so-called Alternative Right that rejects mainstream conservatism. -

Part C _ Think Pieces 289 The Political Organisation of People who are Homeless: Reflections of a Sympathetic Sceptic Mike Allen Focus Ireland, Dublin, Republic of Ireland Introduction Any exploration of how poverty and social exclusion might be eradicated, and conversely of how they persist, must come to terms with the question of how people who are themselves poor are to contribute to that eradication. This contribution can be divided into two main themes : the framing of the sorts of solutions that are required and the political momentum that is necessary to put these into action. People coming from a wide range of political and conceptual positions see social movements of the poor (or representative organisations comprising the poor) capable of achieving both these objectives as the ideal manner in which poverty will be eliminated. Organisations that oppose poverty but do not involve participa- tion of the poor at their core are open to the criticism of contributing to deeper impoverishment, not only through proposing the ‘wrong’ solutions, but also by disempowering those who experience poverty. They run the risk of being charac- terised as part of the problem rather than part of the solution. Experience, however, shows that the poor are unlikely to organise around their interests in any persistent manner, and when they do come together in short-term alliances, the goals they seek to achieve are frequently short term and rarely address the underlying causes of their exclusion (Piven and Cloward, 1979). The conditions which we understand to comprise poverty – lack of resources, social isolation and powerlessness – are deprivations of the very requirements of successful organisation and of long-term thinking. -

Liberalism Vs. Marxism-Leninism and the Future of Education in South Africa
ISSN 2039-2117 (online) Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences Vol 4 No 3 ISSN 2039-9340 (print) MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy September 2013 Liberalism vs. Marxism-Leninism and the Future of Education in South Africa Moeketsi Letseka College of Education, University of South Africa E-mail: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/mjss.2013.v4n3p67 Abstract This paper debates the ideological tension in South Africa between, one the one hand, liberalism, and, on the one hand both the radical Africanist Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) of the 1970s, and the hard-line Marxism-Leninism inclined South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). The paper’s central argument is, on the one hand, that the BCM’s criticisms of liberalism were specific to South Africa’s white liberals and to specific historical moment on the 1970s. On the other hand the SACP and COSATU’s hard-line Marxism-Leninism is pitted against the African National Congress’s (ANC), which is more community oriented and less attuned to the aspirations of organised labour like its partners. And given that the ANC is in the majority and has more or less hegemonised the alliance the threat to liberalism posed by both the radical Africanist BCM and the hard-line Marxism-Leninism of both the SACP and COSATU has been nullified. It can therefore be reasonably argued that South Africa’s project of a liberal conception of education will be sustained in compliance with the country’s liberal and egalitarian Constitution. INTRODUCTION I am not sure that my students will agree, but my opinion is that this is the first time I have lectured in funny clothes. Inaugural lectures, in all the garb, are one of the institutions at Rhodes, to which all previous professorial victims heartily subscribe. However, one of my particular disappointments about the postponement of the Rhodes summit last Saturday is that I was going to propose, as a matter of urgency, that this anachronistic practice be abandoned forthwith. Deprived of that opportunity, I shall of course become a resolute defender of this glorious tradition on September 25th. An associated aspect of this tradition is that the victim reflects upon the state of his or her discipline. I have chosen not to do that, in large measure because I am only a relatively recent arrival in South Africa, I cannot claim to be privy to any intimate understanding of how the academic study of Politics developed in this country. -

It was a deeply disturbing phone call with my elderly father… The Marikana tragedy - a massacre. Like Nelson Mandela he was born in 1918, at the tail end of the First World War. Like many young men of his age in South Africa and across the world, he answered the call in 1939 to defend his country during the World War II against the Nazis in North Africa, who were led by the famous German war officer, Field Marshall Rommel. 2. My father is a man of impeccable principles and unquestionable morality with proven credentials as a patriot. Having risked their lives for the British Empire with other having fallen, he and many other Black soldiers returned home not as heroes but as discarded lepers 1 whilst their fellow white soldiers were showered with distinguished honours. That’s my father. 3. He still lives in our home in Dube, which is named after the founding president of the ANC, John LangalibaleleDube, in Thabo Street, itself named after an old ANC and Communist Party stalwart Thabo Mofutsanyana. That’s the name Govan Mbeki chose for his famous son. Thabo Street also produced five death-row political prisoners. All ANC. Others survived and others died. 4. Again, the troubling Marikana conversation with my father weighed heavily on my shoulders. He had said: “No son of mine should become part of a government that has just killed with riffles its own people in the manner we saw on TV. -

The trade union movement and the 112 Tripartite Alliance: a tangled history Sakhela Buhlungu and Stephen Ellis The 2008 COSATU Workers’ Survey was conducted at a time of extraordinary activity in the Tripartite Alliance between COSATU, the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP). The fourth democratic elections were held a mere fifteen months after the ANC’s historic 52nd National Conference, held at Polokwane in December 2007. It was at this conference that Jacob Zuma had been elected as the president of the ANC in preference to the incumbent, Thabo Mbeki. Zuma’s election was, in effect, the culmination of a popular uprising within the ANC and was the prelude to the recall of Thabo Mbeki as State President in October 2008 and Jacob Zuma’s inauguration into the position in May 2009. There is general agreement that the leadership of COSATU was crucial in organising support for Zuma in the months before Polokwane, mobilising the wider Tripartite Alliance on his behalf. Reviewing events at the federation’s 10th Congress, held some four months after Zuma took the helm, the federation’s leadership gloated: We will not speak of the political investment we have made since we stood up against the encroaching dictatorship and Zanufication of the ANC in the late 1990’s and until the triumph of 2007 in Polokwane, where our ideological foes met their Waterloo. When the historians write honestly about the contributions the workers movement made in this period we are certain they will speak in glowing terms about COSATU. (COSATU 2009: 65) The consequences of those momentous events will doubtless be felt for years to come. -
Comparing Across Regions: Parties and Political Systems in Indonesia and the Pacific Islands1
centre for democratic institutions www.cdi.anu.edu.au CDI Policy Papers on Political Governance Comparing Across Regions: Parties and Political Systems in Indonesia and the Pacific Islands1 Jon Fraenkel & Edward Aspinall Abstract In contrast to Indonesia, politics in the Pacific Islands seems at first sight more parochial, more fluid and less party‐centred. Yet although party systems play a much more robust role at the national level in Indonesia, at the local level, Indonesian politics bears some similarity to those in the Pacific, especially in Melanesia. This paper seeks out patterns of similarity 2013/02 and difference in political competition in Indonesia and the Pacific Islands. We survey five major factors shaping the nature of the party systems in the PPS two regions: 1) broad context (size, geography and economic prosperity); 2) the role of electoral systems and the rules governing parties; 3) ethnic and CDI religious identities; 4) ideological issues or their absence; and 5) how patronage shapes political allegiances. Despite obvious differences, we find some similar patterns of loose and fluid political party allegiances at the local level. How do we begin to compare the political party systems of Indonesia and those of the Pacific Island states? At first glance, the differences appear immense. Indonesia is a single country, with (barring a few exceptions in special regions) a unified set of rules governing political parties, elections and parties. Its party system is relatively robust, with a moderate number of effective parties and considerable continuity between electoral cycles.
