Potter’s new one highlights her trademark howly-growly belt as she rips lyrics like “You wanna get a reaction / You want everyone to listen to you” to measly shreds. The big leagues suit her well.” - SPIN Singles Mix, April 8 2015 Rolling Stone profiles Beth Hart’s fight and Better Than Home “It’s one thing to say you want to tell the truth,” says singer-songwriter Beth Hart, “but it’s another thing to figure out how to tell the truth.” The Los Angeles native with the battle scars on her soul and a voice that testifies is speaking from experience. Hart has just cut two studio albums back to back, the first of which – the soulful and sometimes scarifying Better Than Home – is released this month as she plays Byron Bay’s Bluesfest and enjoys her first headlining Australian tour. As a songwriter she’s been living on coffee, cigarettes and a personal history that for too many years appeared in the throes of a downward spiral. “The floodgates were open and I dived back into the past,” admits the 43-year-old, who has a husky edge to her speaking voice and a ready laugh. “It’s not depressing, but for me to get to those points of truth I have to be vulnerable and live with it.” Hart sings with a mix of arresting power and lucid vulnerability, qualities she shares with forebears such as Janis Joplin, and it’s fuelled by an adult life where the marker stones are often despairing: an older sister who died from complications from AIDS when Hart was a hopeful 20-year-old, initial music industry success that was felled by addiction, and a long struggle with bipolar disorder. The odds of reaching where she is now, including a burgeoning career, a happy marriage to her tour manager Scott Guetz- kow, and a reconciliation with troubled figures from her past such as her father, looked slim at times, but Hart is keen to grasp the second act of her career. “It’s been a long road, but in my family we’re survivors and fighters,” she notes. “Previously success meant something to my character, whereas now if I have success or I don’t have success it’s not a symbol of my character and it’s not a symbol of my work. My best effort has to be good enough for me. I make the best music I can and if they like it that’s good.” Producers were lining up to work with Hart in the 1990s, but after a pair of well-received major label albums, a hit single, 1999’s “L.A. Song (Out of This Town)”, accentuated existing addiction issues. Despite her growing success her label let her go, much to Hart’s retrospective gratitude. “I had such a bad drug problem that I screwed up my life,” Hart recalls. “Atlantic Records dropped me, which is the best thing they could have done: it scared me straight. I had to face the fact that I had to get my shit together.” Drugs and alcohol were put aside, and she began to rebuild her career. But even as Hart found a foothold in Holland and Denmark, where she would tour for months on end and topped the charts, she was ignoring her mental health issues. She would still spin from manic episodes to depression because she wasn’t medicating her bipolar disorder, and eventually a break- down took her to a psychiatric ward. A medicine regimen and intense therapy followed. “I can work and tour and have a marriage and have fun,” Hart says with pride, and her barroom belter music has embraced soulful emotion, bluesy celebration and even jazz’s release across a succession of records, including two recent collaborations with blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Hart has also learnt to balance her musical instincts and lyrical outlook, so that each complements the other. “The music is that beautiful girl you see across the bar that you’re attracted to, but if she doesn’t have anything to say you might hang out with her for the night, you might fuck her, but you probably aren’t going to call her back,” Hart explains. “It can’t just be about the music and it can’t just be about the lyrics.” Unlike some musicians whose recovery from past lows becomes the foundation of their creativity, Hart looks forward as much as she looks back. There’s a celebratory side to Better Than Home that offsets the dark memories and unequivocal plunges. “Even last year I had some self-destructive moments, which is part of my shit for beating myself up over feeling stuff,” she says. “But I made it through that and now that it’s all tied up instead of feeling heavy and laden, I feel so much beauty and power in this record. I like that. I like that a lot.” - Rolling Stone, April 14 2015 Coming up... 5/18: SOAK “Sea Creatures”... June: Phases, ZZ Ward RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 5/6/2015
