A NEIGHBORHOOD IN CALIFORNIA - DAY It’s a bright, clear, sunny day in suburbia. Modest to high-end homes and cars line the perfectly manicured streets and driveways. KIDS (all ages/races) are ushered off to school, daycare, doctor’s appointments, wherever, by their PARENTS or NANNIES. Trendy, early morning RUNNERS and CYCLISTS, rocking the latest workout gear and accessories maneuver the roads. We pan the neighborhood until we spot-- TANAKA CONSTRUCTION & RENOVATIONS vehicles taking up most of the space in front of a beautiful two-story contemporary house. CREW MEMBERSCUT fileTO: in and out, removing debris and adding renovation tools, paint, etc. INT. TANAKA HOUSE - MASTER BATHROOM - DAY ANNABELLE MATHERS (36, BLACK, magnetic, resourceful, deceitful, intimidating) sits inside the waterless bathtub, dressed in workout gear. Minus socks and shoes. Phone in hand. The closed door mutes the sound of POWER TOOLS and PEOPLE TALKING and LAUGHING downstairs. She scrolls through INSTAGRAM. Someone aggressively turns the door knob again. SOMEONE (O.S.) (whiny) Mamaaaaaaa? Annabelle closes her eyes, inhales. Deeply. Holds it a second, exhales. Climbs out of the tub, tucks her phone in the waistband of her pants. Doesn’t respond to the text. FLUSHES the toilet, walks into-- INT. TANAKA HOUSE - MASTER BATHROOM/BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS Annabelle opens the door. DEIDRA TANAKA (12, BLACK/KOREAN, star baseball player, digs shows from the 80s and 90s, loves graphic novels, can be irresponsible) stands in front of her, dirty baseball uniform in hand. Annabelle stops at a bedroom door, peeks in, sans knocking. DEIDRA I won’t be able to practice if I wear a dirty uniform. ANNABELLE Then I guess you’ll be riding the bench. JONATHAN TANAKA (16, BLACK/KOREAN, musically gifted, stronger than he realizes, insecure at times, thoughtful), dressed in blue jeans and a crisp black tee, checks himself out before a floor length mirror. 3 Annabelle tosses the cellphone to him. He catches it with ease. ANNABELLE (CONT’D) (to Jonathan) Don’t for- JONATHAN Forget to give it back to you or Appa after school. We’ve been doing this for three weeks, Ma. I got it. TANAKA HOUSE - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS RAYMOND TANAKA (38, KOREAN, soulful eyes, radiant smile, charming, recovering compulsive gambler) dressed in a Tanaka Construction button up and jeans, reviews a set of BLUEPRINTS at the kitchen table. Annabelle kisses Raymond, playfully fusses with Octavia’s hair. Makes a protein smoothie. Deidra’s fraternal twin, OCTAVIA TANAKA (12, BLACK/KOREAN, passionate about STEM, SCI-FI and fantasy films, studious), eats a bowl of cereal at the kitchen island while she reads. She slides Deidra a bowl of oatmeal and a graphic novel. DEIDRA Daddy- Spots dirty uniform-- RAYMOND Nope. Off Deidra, defeated. She sets the dirty uniform on the counter. Sits behind Octavia, also reads while she eats. Jonathan enters, preoccupied with his phone. Texts a full body picture of himself to TROY. INSERT TEXT ON-SCREEN: GM. Sry I’m l8. Jus got phone back. Fills a glass with the rest, hands it to Raymond. 5 DEIDRA He forgot all about Buggy the second school was over. JONATHAN No he didn’t. DEIDRA Keep telling yourself that. Off Octavia, amused. Jonathan flips his sisters off “Friends” style. ANNABELLE Flip your sisters off again and see what happens. Jonathan feigns ignorance. RAYMOND Friends isn’t a Netflix original, son. We know that’s how Ross and Monica flipped each other off when their parents were around. OCTAVIA/DEIDRA Burn! JONATHAN Shut up. Jonathan’s phone PINGS, a reply from Troy. He checks the message. INSERT TEXT ON-SCREEN: No dummy. Jonathan turns to leave. RAYMOND (to Jonathan) Where are you going? JONATHAN To change. Everyone shakes their heads, like this is a regular thing. 6 ANNABELLE I’m off to the gym. Annabelle plants three kisses on Raymond’s lips. Octavia and Deidra extend their pinky fingers to Annabelle. DOCTOR’S OFFICE - WAITING ROOM - CONTINUOUS Annabelle enters. A handful of PATIENTS sit in the standard issue waiting room. Some read while others distract themselves with their phone. 7 A RECEPTIONIST, who looks like she hasn’t slept in days, shoots a quick head nod to someone we don’t see when she spots Annabelle. A nurse, MALCOLM, opens the door a second later. MALCOLM (to Annabelle) Ms. Stillwell. Come on back. AMARA STILLWELL, the alias Annabelle uses when visiting this office, smiles at Malcolm. Heads for the door after signing in. A few Patients glower at Annabelle and Malcolm as they disappear behind the door. INT. PRIVATE OFFICE - DAY The doctor’s office is modest in size. Medical degrees and achievements hang on the wall, contemporary, but functional furniture complete the space. Annabelle meets with DOCTOR PATRICK VICKERS aka POPPER (30-40s, WHITE), impeccably dressed, bedroom eyes, earth shattering smile, strong jawline, full of himself. Patrick slides his rolling chair away from his desk. Drags the area rug a few inches to access a hidden floor safe. PATRICK Why do you keep fighting it? You know we’d make a great team. Patrick kneels, uses his fingerprint and six-digit pin to open the safe. Retrieves a LARGE BAG of OXYCONTIN. ANNABELLE And you know I don’t mix business with pleasure. He walks around the desk, stands in front of Annabelle. PATRICK I’m happy to cut the business aspect. ANNABELLE Hard pass. Annabelle reaches for the bag. Patrick hides it behind his back, moves closer. 8 He runs his fingers down Annabelle’s bare arm, her eyes trace his hand. PATRICK Imagine what we could accomplish if we really teamed up. ANNABELLE That would be tempting if I didn’t like my meat a little more... pigmented. Patrick scoffs. Annabelle holds out her hand. He hesitates a beat, hands the contraband over. Annabelle drops it in her purse.

He scrunches up his nose, taking it all in as he’s done countless times before. “We all have desires, we all have wants...for once in our lives, let us try and achieve these goals,” the tape coos. “Let us reach our full potential, in whatever field we choose. Let us make our advances!” And as ridiculous as all this sounds, our hero really needs it. He has to fill his head with something before a job. He can’t just stroll into the funeral parlor and begin; he’s not a miracle worker. Well, we know he’s not a miracle worker.

  • Death, Mourning and the Expression of Sorrow on White-Ground Lêkythoi
Portraits of Grief: Death, Mourning and the Expression of Sorrow on White-Ground Lêkythoi Molly Evangeline Allen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Molly Evangeline Allen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Portraits of Grief: Death, Mourning and the Expression of Sorrow on White-Ground Lêkythoi Molly Evangeline Allen In Athens in the early 5th century BCE, a new genre of funerary vase, the white-ground lêkythos, appeared and quickly grew to be the most popular grave gift for nearly a century. These particular vases, along with their relatively delicate style of painting, ushered in a new funerary scene par excellence, which highlighted the sorrow of the living and the merits of the deceased by focusing on personal moments of grief in the presence of a grave. Earlier Attic funerary imagery tended to focus on crowded prothesis scenes where mourners announced their grief and honored the dead through exaggerated, violent and frenzied gestures. The scenes on white-ground lêkythoi accomplished the same ends through new means, namely by focusing on individual mourners and the emotional ways that mourners privately nourished the deceased and their memory. Such scenes combine ritual activity (i.e. dedicating gifts, decorating the grave, pouring libations) with emotional expressions of sadness, which make them more vivid and relatable. The nuances in the characteristics of the mourners indicate a new interest in adding an individual touch to the expression, which might “speak” to a particular moment or variety of sadness that might relate to a potential consumer.
