ABOUT THE AUTHOR Cathy Ruse is Senior Fellow and Director of Human Dignity at Family Research Council. She has devoted her professional career to promoting the dignity of the human person. Her professional experience spans the fields of education, communication, public policy, and law. Previously, Mrs. Ruse was Chief Counsel to the Constitution Subcommittee in the House of Representatives where she had oversight of civil rights and human rights issues, as well as religious freedom and free speech matters which came before the House. She received her law degree from Georgetown University and a certificate from the National Institute for trial advocacy during her work as a litigator in the District of Columbia. She holds an honorary doctoral degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville. She has published scholarly legal articles on a variety of constitutional issues, has filed “Friend of the Court” briefs with the U.S. Supreme Court in cases involving abortion, euthanasia, and pornography, and has testified as an expert in congressional hearings in the U.S. House and Senate. Mrs. Ruse has made national and international media appearances, including PBS, CNN, and Fox News, among many others. Later renamed after the notorious riots in New York, the Stonewall Center has provided the campus and surrounding community with cultural and educational programming through speakers, films, video and book library, Speakers Bureau on LGBTQ issues, referrals and support, advocacy and community outreach. The records of the Stonewall Center include documentation of day to day operations, including phone logs, memos, and budget information, as well as posters and press releases for events, publications, campus and external reports, training manuals, surveys, newspaper clippings, and ephemera such as banners, tee-shirts, and buttons. Foreword Caroline Gorski Group Director, R2 Data Labs at Rolls-Royce At Rolls-Royce, as is increasingly the case across the entire Engineering sector, we recognise the benefits of creating a diverse and inclusive place to work. Not only is this simply the right thing to do, but it is also necessary for the sustainment of our business. After all, diversity leads to a more innovative way of working – critical for any Engineering company – and not to embrace difference will only set limitations on our capabilities. For this reason, I was delighted when I was invited to speak at the InterEngineering Midlands workshop on Bi Visibility in the Workplace. I’m not one for labels, but as someone who could from the outside be labelled as bi, I see Bi Visibility as about having an identity and not being hidden in plain sight. It is entirely possible for those in the bi community to not need to surface themselves – simply put, we’re often categorised as gay, lesbian or straight based purely on the type of relationship we may be in. Sometimes being visible can lead to being judged, including by the gay and lesbian community, as someone who either can’t make up their mind or who continues to be in an adolescent phase of indecision. Outside of the gay community, bisexuality often generates a notion that bi people are greedy or want everything, which can lead to antagonism with an underlying element of sexism, particularly for bi women.
