National Day of Silence: The Freedom to Speak (Or Not) Frequently Asked Questions, Answered by Lambda Legal March 2018 April 27, 2018 is the National Day of Silence, a student-led action sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in which thousands of students around the country will remain silent for all or part of the school day to call attention to the harassment and discrimination faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. Over the years, GLSEN and Lambda Legal have heard from hundreds of students, parents and allies who have encountered resistance from their schools and school officials in response to their efforts to participate in Day of Silence activities. The purpose of this FAQ is to provide information about the rights of students to participate in the Day of Silence and what to do if school officials interfere with those rights. Existing law designates specified days as having special significance, and specifies how the days of special significance should be observed in public elementary and secondary schools and educational institutions. This bill would express findings and declarations of the Legislature relating to Ronald Reagan. This bill would designate February 6 of each year as Ronald Reagan Day, and would encourage public schools and educational institutions to engage in exercises remembering the life of Ronald Reagan, as specified. PLANNING FOR ACTION LGBTI RELEVANT & INCLUSIVE ACTIVITIES & RESOURCES FOR SOCIAL SUPPORT & ACTIVITY PROGRAMS BACKGROUND In mainstream social support and activity programs for older people, services aim to provide a range of activities to meet the needs of an often diverse range of participants. In order to provide a welcoming environment for older lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people, services need to provide some activities that can demonstrate welcome and relevance. While not all older LGBTI people will be out to the service, the provision of LGBTI relevant and inclusive activities are a visible and meaningful message of welcome and inclusion to LGBTI participants. This resource includes a range of possible activities and resources that could be included in a mainstream program that will be of interest to not only many older LGBTI people but mainstream service users too. Of course, there are likely to be much more content that is relevant and inviting, so undertake some research and seek ideas from participants through consultation and feedback, and any other ways your service plans and develops your program FESTIVALS There are a range of Victorian LGBTI specific festivals including some of the regional festivals – of course everyone can attend so consider scheduling a trip or session in your program. The Network was launched as part of a comprehensive plan to empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) and allied students to combat bullying in their schools. To support these student efforts, the Colorado GSA Network has developed tools and resources for Gay-Straight Alliances to educate their schools and communities.
