I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This dissertation is about influence which is defined as the ability to move ideas forward within, and in some cases across, organizations. More specifically it is about an extraordinary organization called the Club of Rome (COR), who became advocates of the idea of greater use of systems analysis in the development of policy. The systems approach to policy required rational, holistic and long-range thinking. It was an approach that attracted the attention of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Commonality of interests and concerns united the disparate members of the COR and allowed that organization to develop an influential presence within Canada during Trudeau’s time in office from 1968 to 1984. The story of the COR in Canada is extended beyond the end of the Trudeau era to explain how the key elements that had allowed the organization and its Canadian Association (CACOR) to develop an influential presence quickly dissipated in the post- 1984 era. The key reasons for decline were time and circumstance as the COR/CACOR membership aged, contacts were lost, and there was a political paradigm shift that was antithetical to COR/CACOR ideas. -

Introduction When the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes – from 1929 Kingdom of Yugoslavia – was formed in 1918, one of its most important tasks was to forge a common collective identity. Intellectual elites in the young state with great optimism agreed that education would play a crucial role in this process. It should come as no surprise, then, that a relatively rich tradition of scholarly research into the representation of collective identities in Yugoslav education has originated, precisely to account for the failure of the Yugoslav project in the long term. Recently, a growing body of scholarly research has established textbooks as one of the more rewarding sources for studying collective identity in education, focusing on ‘what knowledge is included and rejected in ... textbooks, and how the transmission of this selected knowledge often attempts to shape a particular form of national memory, national identity and national consciousness’.1 For the Yugoslav case this emerging research field so far has primarily examined textbooks which were used in the period directly preceding, during and following the disintegration of Yugoslavia.2 However, as the present article hopes to illustrate, textbook analysis can also provide the historian with interesting new elements for the study of collective identities in Yugoslavia’s more distant past. As a young boy, Rastko left home to join the Orthodox monastic colony on Mount Athos and was given the name Sava. In 1197 his father, King Stefan Nemanja, joined him. In 1198 they moved to and restored the abandoned monastery Hilandar, which was at that time the center of Serbian Orthodox monastic life. St. Sava's father took the monastic vows under the name Simeon, and died in Hilandar on February 13, 1200. He is also canonized a saint of the Church. After his father's death, Sava retreated to an ascetic monastery in Kareya which he built himself in 1199. He also wrote the Kareya typicon both for Hilandar and for the monastery of ascetism. The last typicon is inscribed into the marble board at the ascetic monastery, which today also exists there. He stayed on Athos until the end of 1207, when he persuaded the Patriarch of Constantinople to elevate him to the position of first Serbian archbishop, thereby establishing the independence of the archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the year 1219. Saint Sava is celebrated as the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and as the patron saint of education and medicine among Serbs. -

Includes material such as photographs and newspaper clippings related to her modeling career and her work as a fashion consultant (1952-1970). The collection covers Sutton Straus’ career as a journalist with the Toronto Telegram (1971), The Toronto Star (1972-1979, 1981-1992) and The Toronto Star (1979-1981, 1992). This includes correspondence from readers, co-workers and well-known politicians, entertainers and dignitaries, as well as photographs of Sutton Straus during the course of her work. The material also includes clippings of her columns, interviews and articles preserved by Sutton Straus, as well as three oversized scrapbooks containing clippings from her time at the Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Sun. The collection also comprises material related to Sutton Straus’ career as an author of six books, and her long-term volunteer work with non-profit and philanthropic organizations in both Canada and the United States. The collection also contains a small amount of personal material related to Sutton Straus including media appearances, speeches, newspaper and magazines articles, invitations and correspondence. Vol. 6, 2002, 69-80. “USE” OF THE HOLIDAY FOR PROPAGANDA PURPOSES (The ‘Serbian’ Slava and/or the ‘Bulgarian’ Sãbor)* A concrete occasion, prompting the writing of this article was the “provocation” of my colleague G.Vãlčinova, who placed the ethnographic facts in “the field of tension” in relations between Serbs and Bulgarians, by studying the construction of a boundary-like phenomenon (Vãlčinova G., 1999). Since the basic study of Frederic Barth (Barth F., 1969), the concept of “boundary” in socio-anthropological terms can be interpreted on different levels: cultural, ethnic, and political. In this context the boundary is a state and a process, whose ethnic (or, to be more precise, ethno-cultural) dimensions intertwine with the social and economic factors and processes. The very concepts of nation and of cultural tradition that are identified with it can be regarded through the prism of the propaganda structure, whereby one of the research perspectives is the possibility of destruction of the “imagined” communities and the “invention” of traditions in the spirit of the works of Benedict Anderson and Eric Hobsbawm (Anderson B., 1991; Hobsbawm E., 1983). It is the objective of this article to show how in boundary conditions, when the ethnic or national belonging prove to be, by and large, open to “settlement”, agreement and manipulation, some individual ethnographic facts, detached from the cultural context, become ethno-identification markers, whereby the ideal construction referred to as a political boundary can be substantiated. -

Keywords: First I present historical revisionism regarding gender roles and the construction of gender identities in the nationalist dis- gender identities, courses of postsocialist Serbia.
