The Airports & ACAA Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) oversees and maintains Pittsburgh International Airport and Allegheny County Airport. Pittsburgh International Airport Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is in Findlay and Moon townships in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, about 20 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh. It is the second-busiest airport in Pennsylvania, after Philadelphia International Airport, serving nearly 9 million passengers in 2017. To manage growing passenger traffic, construction began on the original Greater Pittsburgh International Airport in 1946 and opened in 1952. Over time, as passenger traffic further increased, services were expanded both domestically and internationally. Allegheny County and ACAA undertook a major, nearly billion-dollar airport expansion in 1987. The new Pittsburgh International Airport opened in 1992 and has been ranked highly by travelers and industry journals. In January 2018, Air Transport World magazine named PIT its 2017 Airport of the Year, placing the airport in prestigious company alongside past winners Hong Kong International, London Heathrow and Singapore Changi. Travel + Leisure also named Pittsburgh International a Top 10 Domestic Airport in 2016. TripAdvisor ranked Pittsburgh International Airport a Traveler’s Choice Favorite for Shopping in 2016. Now, PIT is undergoing a Terminal Modernization Program which promises to positively change the air travel experience in and out of Pittsburgh for decades. Author: Stephan Bontrager, Director of Communications, Riverlife A Big Step Forward: Point State Park Pittsburgh’s riverfronts have undergone a long transformation from being used primarily for industry in the first half of the 20th century to the green public parks, trails, and facilities of today. The city’s riverbanks along its three rivers—the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio—are a patchwork quilt of publicly- and privately owned land, lined with industrial and transportation infrastructure that has created challenges for interconnected riverfront redevelopment across property lines. Despite the obstacles, Pittsburgh has seen a remarkable renaissance along its waterfronts. The city’s modern riverfront transformation began with the construction of Point State Park during the first “Pittsburgh Renaissance” movement of the 1940s and 50s by then- mayor David L. Lawrence. The 36-acre park at the confluence of Pittsburgh’s three rivers (the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio) was conceived as a transformational urban renewal project that would create public green space at the tip of the Pittsburgh peninsula. Championed by a bipartisan coalition of Lawrence, banker Richard King Mellon, and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Point State Park was created on land used primarily as a rail yard and acquired through eminent domain. Construction took several decades and the park was officially declared finished and opened to the public in 1974 with the debut of its signature feature, a 150-foot fountain at the westernmost tip of the park. After its opening, Point State Park saw near-constant use and subsequent deferred maintenance. In 2007 as part of the Pittsburgh 250th anniversary celebration, the park underwent a $35 million top-to-bottom renovation led by the Allegheny Conference, Riverlife, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources which owns and operates the park. -

For the Riverlife Task Force, the plan will also serve as a guide as we work with public and private stakeholders to develop long and short-term priorities. We are proud to present Connecting the Loop and we invite you to work with us to return Pittsburgh’s greatest asset to the public — its rivers and miles of shoreline. -

TOTAL ACTUAL COST: $104 million 2001 The site is completed. HISTORY The steel production on the northern region was owned by Benjamin Franklin Jones. In 1853 Jones merged his operations with the South Side’s American Iron Works, which was co-owned by the brothers Bernard and John Lauth. This resulted in the formation of the Jones and Lauth Company. When the Lauth brothers sold the corporation to a banker named James Laughlin in 1863, the company took the name Jones and Laughlin Company. In 1887 a bridge connecting the north and south shores of the Monongahela River was constructed to transport the hot pig iron manufactured on the northern shore to the processing facility in the south. This bridge known as the Hot Metal Bridge has been renovated for vehicular traffic presently. J&L was, by far, the major competitor to the Carnegie Steel, the top steel producer at the time. -

For Public Review and Comment: December 7, 2020 – January 12, 2021 2021-2024 Transportation Improvement Program Air Quality Conformity Determination for Proposed Amendments to SmartMoves for a Changing Region & 2021-2024 Transportation Improvement Program The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) is seeking your input for Air Quality Conformity Determination and proposed amendments to SmartMoves for a Changing Region (Southwestern PA’s Long Range Transportation Plan) and the 2021-2024 Transportation Improvement Program (2021-2024 TIP). U.S.DOT BUILD Grant: Butler County - State Route 228 Improvements The U.S. Department of Transportation has recently awarded $25 million of discretionary BUILD grant funding to Butler County to construct roadway, intersection, and pedestrian improvements along two segments of State Route 228 and State Route 3020 (Freedom Road). The region’s TIP and Long Range Plan need to be amended, and the region’s air quality conformity assessment needs to be updated before the project can begin construction. SPC is seeking public feedback as part of the amendment process. The project includes improvements on Freedom Road from Powell Road to Haine School Road, and on State Route 228 at the intersection with Three Degree Road. Various improvements include adding new travel lanes, widening existing lanes, adding turn lanes, converting intersections to roundabouts or jug handles, installing ADA ramps, adding multi-use paths and sidewalks, upgrading traffic signals, and adding pavement markings. HISTORY The steel plant on the site had operated since 1893 and housed open hearth furnaces and blooming and billet mills. In 1947, James J. Ling started an electrical construction and engineering firm in Dallas, Texas. Through a number of takeovers and mergers, the company that Ling established eventually became known as Ling- Temco-Vought (LTV). When LTV took over Republic Steel and combined with J&L to form LTV Steel Co., it became the second largest steel producer in the nation. LTV was set to have a large station in Pittsburgh as J&L is a Pittsburgh-based company. All three of its manufacturing facilities were located there, including South Side Works. At its peak in the 1960s, J & L employed about 8,500 people.
