The Migrating Art Academies (MigAA) project was realized between 2008 and 2010 with the support of the European Commission Cultural Program, and was a collaboration between the European School of Visual Arts (ÉESI, FR), the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM, DE), and the Vil- nius Academy of Art (VDA, LT). It unequivocally provided a unique opportunity for both creativity and reflection as well as a remarkable teaching laboratory for the students and the teachers who accompanied them. Issues central to the final third of the 20th century were globalization and the increasing phenomenon of migra- tion – notably affected by changes of both an economic (delocalization), ecological (desertification, droughts, deforestation, salinization), and political nature (persecu- tion, famines resulting from war, population expulsion). Chan’s architectural and design experience crosses multiple fields and scales, all guided by the simple philosophy that architecture and aesthetics are part of the same impulse. Chan is the principal of Zarch Collaboratives - one of Singapore’s leading architectural studios established in 1999. The objective of the studio is to practice and fulfil architectural projects but also cross disciplines and approach the means of spatial design. They have worked on a series of exhibition spaces, stage set designs, art installations, world expositions and catered for private and public housing plans. Additionally, Chan is the creative director of Singapore: Inside Out, an international platform featuring a collection of multi-disciplinary experiences created by practicing artists. It is a platform with a global intention. It accommodates and presents the creative talents of Beijing, London, New York and Singapore. Artistically it combines the varying disciplines of architecture, design, fashion, film, food, music, performance and the visual arts. Hubertus von Amelunxen Professor Dr. Hubertus von Amelunxen was born in Hindelang, Germany in 1958. He lives in Berlin and Switzerland. After studies in French and German Literature and in Art History at the Philipps- Universität, Marburg and the École Normale Supérieure de Paris, he wrote his Ph.D. on Allegory and Photography: Inquiries into 19th Century French Literature. He was professor of Cultural Studies and the Founding Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at the Muthesius Academy of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts in Kiel between 1995 and 2000.

At the center of this shakeup was the modern structure par excellence : the State. This dissertation analyzes the dissolution of the bond between architecture and the State through a double lens. First, this study is framed by the workings of an architect, Aldo Rossi, whose practice mirrored this transformation in a unique way, going from Mussolini’s Italy to Reagan’s America, from the Communist Party to Disneyland. The second lens is provided by a set of technological apparatuses ii that, in this pre-digital world, impacted the reach of the State and the boundaries of architecture. Drawing on the multifaceted root of the term “State,” this dissertation sets out to explore a series of case studies that addressed the need to re-state architecture – both in the sense of relocating architecture within new landscapes of power and in the sense of finding ways to keep reproducing it in those uncharted territories.

  • William Engelen's Score 32 Bpm and the Trans-Sensory Nature of Sound Sculpture
    WILLIAM ENGELEN’S SCORE 32 BPM AND THE TRANS-SENSORY NATURE OF SOUND SCULPTURE With “32 bpm”, William Engelen has created an artwork for the Kunsthalle Mannheim that consists of four formats: from the graphi- cal notation of the score, via the ephemeral performance and the subsequent presentation of the recordings as a video and sound installation in the BOX, to the album with a booklet in which this text is published. “32 bpm” is a site-specific composition for percussion performed for the first time by the musicians of the Mannheimer Schlagwerk in cooperation with the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts. Engelen’s works are based on scores for who- se compositions the artist integrates cer- tain characteristics of the venue, objects, or also the musicians. Be it the instru- mental interpretation of a park in “Stadt- garten” (2003) for the Neuer Aachener Kunst- verein, the performance in a former iron- works in “Partitur Belval” (2016) in Lux- embourg1 or playing music as a conversation with a house plant in “Jochen” (2011) — the composition always includes an alienating and cunning element that goes beyond the mu- sic and belongs to the artistic concept. Engelen uses the instruments not to repro- duce melodies and conventional pieces but as sound sources that make a situation visible and audible. In this respect, Engelen does not work as a musician but as a conceptual artist and composer whose oeuvre builds upon the achievements of New Music and the artis- tic neo-avant-garde. For visual art in modernism, the engagement with performance, body and sound is linked to the experiences of music and the performing arts.

The "Migrating Reality Project" organized between 04-05 April 2008 at GdK, Galerie der Künste in Berlin is a live platform to discuss the mixing and remixing of art forms and digital data flows within the context of the current worldwide reality of migration. From 01 March in cooperation with the online zine balsas.cc for media and technology (http://www.balsas.cc) we are initiating a focused look at the migration between reality, media, technologies, art, spaces, disciplines, politics, and networks. Migration interests us in cultural and technological aspects as well as in aspects of the movement of different objects and subjects. Balsas.cc has been publishing online in Lithuanian and English from Vilnius, Lithuania since 2005. Every fourth month it announces a new topic and as of now "Migrating Reality" is open for your interpretation. We invite the submission of texts, sounds, and visuals (photo, video, etc) which will help us to delve deeper into the subject during the Berlin project. Balsas.cc is stimulating interest in the generation and publishing of ideas online -- the most interesting of which will be published in the printed catalog at the end of 2008. We are interested in not only pure texts but also in migrating formats, interdisciplinary discussions, interviews, and the meetings of artists and theoreticians.
