R. J. Edwards was the right man in the right spot for the Riverdale High School midget boys basketball team as he sparked them to a 48-43 come-from-behind victory over Westmount High School to capture the GMAA midget championships Wednesday afternoon. Edwards is a rare breed of basketball player, a talented, skilled player who lets the game come to him and plays within the confines of the team concept. And he does it very well. Edwards opened the game with a three- pointer and then faded into the back- ground as Westmount jumped out to a five point lead midway through the second quarter. At that point he began to assert himself and in a four-minute span he con- nected on two three-pointers and scored 10 points to give Riverdale a 27-22 half- time lead. As has been the case all year Westmount refused to quit and regained the lead, 37-34, with seven minutes remaining in the contest. Once again it was Edwards’ time to shine as he connect- ed on two more treys to put Riverdale ahead to stay. Edwards led all scorers with 25 points while teammate Hakeem Shaw-Campbell added 17 to the winning cause. Eijah Stewarr had an exceptional game for Westmount with a team-high 24 points while Quarry Whyne chipped in with 11. “I try to play a team game, the most important thing is to win and I try to do whatever I can to help my team win,’ Edwards said modesty after receiving his gold medal and MVP plaque.
