In defining authentic artists as those displaying a true sense of themselves, others and their culture, multifaceted artists, who rarely boast these qualities, are at once dismissed. Yet to one’s mind, these sorts of artists are authentic and these definitions fail to do them justice. To tackle this issue, using David Bowie, a widely acclaimed multifaceted artist, as its case study, first the “traditional” definitions are introduced and applied. Through this it is concluded that they are applicable only in part, and so not applicable consistently enough to be deemed good definitions for multifaceted artists. Following this, the characteristics of the multifaceted artist that make it difficult to apply “traditional” definitions are identified, and alternative definitions of authenticity that complement these characteristics are brought in and applied. These approaches beg the question that perhaps the issue lies not in the multifaceted nature of some artists, but with authenticity itself. Subsequently, it is submitted that authenticity itself is a limiting concept, because of its polysemous nature, and that the definitions are problematic and subjective, because they are based on the self (including the other) and culture, both subjective concepts.

    David Bowie’s LOW: A Forty-One Year High January 1977’s LOW was the new soul of a refreshed career and the end of a drug- ravaged David Bowie. Coming off the schizophrenically bombastic/crooning STATION TO STATION, a flirt with the silver screen in The Man Who Fell To Earth, and a hungover 1976, the recording sessions were unimaginable. Primarily Americans made up the band, bringing driving live drums and a soul influence like on STATION and YOUNG AMERICANS. Brian Eno acts as a muse by introducing electronic elements. Bowie himself battled lawyers in Paris and constant back-and-forth summons aside a crumbling marriage. All company were packed into an allegedly haunted chateau in southern France and finished it off in Hansa Studios, adjacent to the Wall in Berlin. The album comes as two courses. Side B is the largest rebuke to STATION, treating Communist Europe as almost a referent object: a bulwark against the coke- fueled, fascist-tinged excess through minimalism and order. The expected character studies of previous records give way to atmospheric worldbuilding for an artist in need of a new habitat, not a new skin to hide in, and it contains by far the most hope for something new. Side A is a refraction of that status quo, made up of glass shards of writer’s block constantly changing stride against audience expectations and even themselves. Gone are those characters of his self-titled, ZIGGY, and already great oeuvre, so too are the twinkling stars of his younger eyes — what remains is a shattered pastiche.

    Chicana and Chicano Art: A History of an American Art Movement, 1965 to the Present Professor Holly Barnet-Sanchez University of New Mexico T/Th, 12:30-1:45 Course Description: The Chicano Art Movement began in the mid-1960s in support of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement (el movimiento). For the next two decades Chicana and Chicano artists throughout the nation created artworks in all media that addressed, celebrated, and critiqued the rich cultural heritage of the Mexican American people, the political and civil struggles of their communities, and their commitment to international contemporary cultural and political innovation. If the Chicano Art Movement ended in 1985 or 1990 (as is debated) what has been happening in the past 20 + years? This semester we will explore the history of Chicana/o artistic production from its beginnings in political struggle, aesthetic exploration, and community building, to recent developments in the art world and in digital/new media, among other areas of engagement. We will examine the critical role of collective art forms and practices and the relationship to other Chicana/o arts (teatro, cinema, music, literature). In addition, we will address the historical and ongoing debates within Chicana/o communities about the purposes and limits of art, how it can affect understanding and effect meaning, how it can or cannot change lives, social structures, and systems of control and knowledge. Within a structure that organizes the material both chronologically and thematically, we will study the work of individual artists, grupos (artists’ groups or collectives), and several of the key centros (cultural centers) throughout the United States in order to arrive at a hopefully extensive, if not exhaustive, overview of the myriad forms, transformations of traditional practices, iconographical and formal innovations, practices, issues, and debates that inform this movement.
