Norms and rules existing in the target language and culture (Italian) are in fact often prioritised over an author’s own writing technique and elements specific to the source culture. Accordingly, unmarked structures are also often preferred to marked structures, with the result that Australian literature is often homogenised, its Australianness blurred. On the other hand, a small number of Italian translations of Australian literature excel in their attempt to be source-oriented, oriented towards the original, its cultural and stylistic peculiarities, rather than target-oriented. Translations done following this approach inspired my academic translation into Italian of Elizabeth Jolley’s Mr Scobie’s Riddle. In my doctoral thesis I translated Elizabeth Jolley’s Mr Scobie’s Riddle into Italian in its entirety, aiming for the preservation of culture-specific elements and Jolley’s stylistic peculiarities and using compensation strategies wherever the cultural gap between Australia and Italy, or the structural differences between English and Italian, could potentially cause a loss in translation. In order for the specificity of Jolley’s novel to be maintained in translation, three types of analysis were undergone: the first, a narratological analysis of the novel; the second, a translational analysis of the novel to translate, a type of analysis carried out before the beginning the translation process; finally, an analysis of the translated text and the main issues stemming from the contrast between the two languages and cultures involved. This publication brings together the translation and the analysis, the practice and the theory behind it, in an attempt to show the thought process behind my translational choices. In order to be successful in my attempt to preserve culture-specific elements and stylistic peculiarities across the translational process I adopted a method oriented towards the source, which prioritises the source text’s peculiarities and culture-specific elements while being transported into another language. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The three years spent on my doctoral thesis at The University of Western Australia have been a path of discovery: not only have I learnt and discovered in the discipline of Translation Studies, the main discipline of my doctoral research and an ongoing interest since my undergraduate studies, and Australian literature, a newfound interest, but I also discovered my vocation to teach at tertiary level, an extremely challenging yet gratifying activity, from what I can gather so far. None of this would have been possible without the international scholarships allocated by the Graduate Research School and Postgraduate Association at The University of Western Australia. I am extremely thankful for the incredible opportunity to study a doctoral degree and to live life in Perth, Western Australia. Publication of Australian novels and discussion of this phenomenon have long been sites for the expression of wider tensions between national identity and overseas influence characteristic of postcolonial societies. Australian novel publishing since 1950 can be roughly divided into three periods, characterized by the specific, and changing, relationship between national and non-national influences. In the first, the 1950s and 1960s, British companies dominated the publication of Australian novels, and publishing decisions were predominantly made overseas. Yet a local industry also emerged, driven by often contradictory impulses of national sentiment, and demand for American-style pulp fiction. In the second period, the 1970s and 1980s, cultural nationalist policies and broad social changes supported the growth of a vibrant local publishing industry. At the same time, the significant economic and logistical challenges of local publishing led to closures and mergers, and—along with the increasing globalization of publishing—enabled the entry of large, multinational enterprises into the market. This latter trend, and the processes of globalization and deregulation, continued in the final period, since the 1990s. Nevertheless, these decades have also witnessed the ongoing development and consolidation of local publishing of Australian novels— including in new forms of e-publishing and self-publishing—as well as continued government and social support for this activity, and for Australian literature more broadly.

    Australia and Its German-Speaking Readers: A Study of How German Publishers Have Imagined Their Readers of Australian Literature OLIVER HAAG Austrian Research Centre for Transcultural Studies, Vienna Australian literature is marketed not only to a national audience but also to an overseas readership, who consume it both in English and in various languages of translation, of which German seems to be the most common.1 The publication of translated Australian books thus undergoes marketing processes similar to those in Australia. One of the most immediate publishing mechanisms is the physical appearance of a book, or what Gerard Genette terms the ‘publisher’s peritexts’ (16); that is, the texts that ‘surround’ the actual text, such as book covers. Dust jackets in particular establish the first act of engagement between an author—or more properly, the author’s words—and his or her prospective readers: ‘Your potential reader will form an impression of your book while looking at the cover—before they even decide to look inside’ (Masterson 161). Thus, in making a particular book palatable for a prospective readership, publishers2 shape the story with a vision of the reader in mind: first, they advertise the text through its cover illustration and blurb, both of which usually reflect and summarise the content; secondly, in so doing, publishers develop an image of prospective readers. They evaluate readers’ tastes and assess their target readers, including their age, level of education, and gender; then, based on such assessments, they develop strategies for marketing a book to this particular group of intended readers. Furthermore, Genette argues that such practices are ‘made up of a heterogeneous group of practices and discourses of all kinds and dating from all periods’ (2).

I'm not going to wheel out a theoretical approach through which to interpret the text, as if the reading I could produce by that means were somehow more authoritative than any other. Instead, what I will do is situate Winton's career and this particular novel in what can be called the field of Australian literature. In using this term field, I mean to indicate the whole system involved in the production and reception of Australian literature. This is now a very broad spectrum of institutions, personnel, practices and values that is surprisingly complex and diverse. It is now so extensive that it isn't even confined to Australia. And academic literary criticism — in the sense of theoretically-driven textual analysis — is only one part of that field. Many would say that it's not even the most important part. This idea of a “field” derives from the work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu.1 Much of Bourdieu's work was done on French art culture of the nineteenth century, but it has been widely used in recent years as a tool for thinking about how other culture industries work, including print culture, cinema and music.

Forster, Howard’s End (epigraph) To give a truthful account [. .] is beyond the powers of the biogra- pher or the historian. [. .] Fiction is truer than fact. Virginia Woolf, Orlando (ch. 4) Three things emerge: The first is that the mother always forgives. The second is that it is often not possible to write about events until they are over or sufficiently of the past [. .] in that twilight between the fact and the imagined. [. .] And, thirdly, secrets, if they are revealed completely, become mere facts. Secrets, if partly kept, can be seen as relating not to some kind of imitation but to something extra to real life. Elizabeth Jolley, The Georges’ Wife (8) This long early passage from Elizabeth Jolley’s The Georges’ Wife—the final vol- ume of her major work, the Vera trilogy—evokes the ethos and aesthetic of two other great modernist fiction writers: E. M. Forster whose conviction was that one should “only connect” and that friendship is the superordinate connection be- tween people; and Virginia Woolf whose metonymic lyricism is kin to Jolley’s deployment of “sophisticated spaces” (“Habit” 124). Moreover, they function as a point de caption, a quilting point for what has been worked through in the previ- ous two volumes of the trilogy and what will be concluded—something to do with mothers and fathers, with mothering and fathering, and with friendship. And, finally, this passage is significant for what I wish to explore here through the figure of Mr Berrington in Jolley’s writing—the way in which Jolley’s fiction 67 68 JASAL 3 2004 negotiates connections between life and work, and the equally significant ways in which we as readers (and biographers) experience and reproduce that connection.

I have never watched much sport. But in July 2016 I had a three-month old baby to look after, meaning I was spending a lot of time on the couch watching daytime television; and when the Olympics are on, there’s not much other daytime television on offer. And for someone who doesn’t watch a lot of sport—indeed, for a sleep-deprived parent—the Olympics are perfect. You don’t have to know much about the individual events; you can switch on and off whenever you want; and perhaps most importantly, you know your team— in my case, Australia—and you can understand the scoreboard: how many medals do we have? My Olympics watching activities might seem a long way away from the place of women in Australian literature. But sitting on the couch, watching the pole vaulting and feeding my baby, it occurred to me that there is a degree of overlap between my watching of the Olympics and an increasingly prominent means of understanding and advocating for women in literature: metrics regarding women’s representation. As is the case elsewhere, in Australia shortlists and awards for literary prizes invariably generate discussion about the number of women featured. In 2013, the Stella Prize was established in response to the low number of women awarded Australia’s most prestigious literary prize, the Miles Franklin.
