Edited by Coral Howells, Paul Sharrad and Gerry Turcotte. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017. Publication of Australian novels and discussion of this phenomenon have long been sites for the expression of wider tensions between national identity and overseas influence characteristic of postcolonial societies. Australian novel publishing since 1950 can be roughly divided into three periods, characterized by the specific, and changing, relationship between national and non-national influences. In the first, the 1950s and 1960s, British companies dominated the publication of Australian novels, and publishing decisions were predominantly made overseas. Yet a local industry also emerged, driven by often contradictory impulses of national sentiment, and demand for American-style pulp fiction. In the second period, the 1970s and 1980s, cultural nationalist policies and broad social changes supported the growth of a vibrant local publishing industry. At the same time, the significant economic and logistical challenges of local publishing led to closures and mergers, and—along with the increasing globalization of publishing—enabled the entry of large, multinational enterprises into the market. This latter trend, and the processes of globalization and deregulation, continued in the final period, since the 1990s. Nevertheless, these decades have also witnessed the ongoing development and consolidation of local publishing of Australian novels— including in new forms of e-publishing and self-publishing—as well as continued government and social support for this activity, and for Australian literature more broadly. -

Australia and Its German-Speaking Readers: A Study of How German Publishers Have Imagined Their Readers of Australian Literature OLIVER HAAG Austrian Research Centre for Transcultural Studies, Vienna Australian literature is marketed not only to a national audience but also to an overseas readership, who consume it both in English and in various languages of translation, of which German seems to be the most common.1 The publication of translated Australian books thus undergoes marketing processes similar to those in Australia. One of the most immediate publishing mechanisms is the physical appearance of a book, or what Gerard Genette terms the ‘publisher’s peritexts’ (16); that is, the texts that ‘surround’ the actual text, such as book covers. Dust jackets in particular establish the first act of engagement between an author—or more properly, the author’s words—and his or her prospective readers: ‘Your potential reader will form an impression of your book while looking at the cover—before they even decide to look inside’ (Masterson 161). Thus, in making a particular book palatable for a prospective readership, publishers2 shape the story with a vision of the reader in mind: first, they advertise the text through its cover illustration and blurb, both of which usually reflect and summarise the content; secondly, in so doing, publishers develop an image of prospective readers. They evaluate readers’ tastes and assess their target readers, including their age, level of education, and gender; then, based on such assessments, they develop strategies for marketing a book to this particular group of intended readers. Furthermore, Genette argues that such practices are ‘made up of a heterogeneous group of practices and discourses of all kinds and dating from all periods’ (2). -

That same year Louise E Rorabacher wrote a book-length study - Marjorie Barnard and M Barnard Eldershaw, after agreeing not to write about Barnard's private life. This led to many studies of the pair's joint literary output and short biographical studies and much misinformation, from scholars beguiled into believing Barnard's stories which were often deliberately disseminated to protect the secrecy of the affair that dominated her life between 1934 and 1942. A re-examination of her life and work is now necessary because there have been huge misunderstandings about other aspects of Barnard's life, too. Her habit of telling imaginary stories denigrating her father, led to him being maligned by his daughter's interviewers. Marjorie's commonest accusation was of her father's meanness, starting with her student allowance, but if the changing value of money is taken into account, her allowance (for pocket money) was extremely generous compared to wages of the time. -

Overlay this map with one which shows holy sites, as identified over the years by Christian theologians. There's God in the centre, some where around Uluru, Ayers Rock. -

In 1981 Manning Clark claimed that Furphy is ‘the author of a classic which few were to read and no one was ever to establish clearly what it was all about’. Julian Croft observes that Such is Life is a ‘cultural monument’ which is ‘more often referred to than read for pleasure’ since it ‘tests the skill, patience and endurance of those who attempt it’ (TC 275). The demanding nature of the novel, with its unusually complex narrative structure, inter- textual references and playful use of language, can be off-putting to many readers but it has attracted a small number of dedicated followers, who have been largely responsible for the efforts to memorialise Furphy and his contribution to Australian literary culture. -

There were (usually $2,999) now only $1,500 twenty-six authors involved, including Rodney Hall, Kel Richards, To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the publication of the first edition of the Marele Day, Vikram Seth, Joanna Trollope, James Gleick, Colin OED, the price has been dramatically reduced for a limited time. This is the Wilson and Carol Shields. When Peter lowest price it has ever been, so if you've always wanted to own all 20 Carey won the Booker Prize for Oscar volumes and 22,000 pages of this magnificent dictionary, here is your and Lucinda, he came here and sat chance! The NSW Government is committed to increasing public engagement with the arts. Administered by the State Library of NSW, the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards provide an opportunity to highlight the importance of literacy and to encourage everyone to enjoy and learn from the work of our writers. These annual awards honour distinguished achievement by Australian writers, contribute to Australia’s artistic reputation, and draw international attention to some of our best writers and to the cultural environment that nurtures them. Past winners have included such notable writers as Peter Carey, David Malouf AO, Elizabeth Jolley, Thomas Keneally AO and Helen Garner. Total prize money in 2016, including sponsored awards, is $305,000. Writers and illustrators whose works are nominated must be living Australian citizens or persons holding permanent resident status. The NSW Premier’s Literary Awards are presented by the NSW Government and administered by the State Library in association with Arts NSW. A review of the mechanisms for promoting Australian literature including literary prizes, databases, surveys and texts included for study in senior English classrooms in New South Wales and Victoria provides a background for considering the purpose of Australian texts and the role of literature teachers in shaping students’ engagement with literature. In taking the pulse of Australian literature generally it is worth pausing to think about some of Australia’s literary prizes and their accompanying guidelines and criteria. Many texts set for study in classrooms first appear on our radar through these prize lists. One of the most prestigious and oldest awards is the Miles Franklin Award which commenced in 1957. The winner of that year was Patrick White for his novel Voss. In the 54 years since the prize was established it has been won by female writers on 12 occasions, including four-time winner Thea Astley. Given Thea Astley’s repeat performances, the prize has been awarded to nine individual female authors. Male authors have won the award on 39 occasions including repeat wins by Patrick White (2) Kim Scott (2) Alex Miller (2) Tim Winton (4) Thomas Keneally (2) and Peter Carey (3). Overall, the award went to 30 individual male authors. -

Reviewed by Jean-François VERNAY Tim Winton has written his way to become the darling of Australian readers who enjoy his rich prose evocative of the south-western landscape which he calls home. He can be regarded as a left-leaning writer who has a close affinity with the people and es- pecially the land which he celebrates in his stories. His coastal narratives invariably viv- idly depict rural communities functioning in harmony with the beach culture. Winton’s focus is domestic, if not personal, fathoming the cultural and psychological impact of the Australian land. -

Most of their staff are engaged in direct service to the present university community or in acquiring and making the basic finding records for books, periodicals, tapes and other information sources. Compiling a catalogue of manuscripts is a different type of operation which university libraries can all too seldom afford. It is a painstaking, detailed, time-consuming operation for which a busy library and busy librarians find difficulty in finding time and protecting that time from the insistent demand of the customer standing impatiently at the service counter. Yet a collection of manuscripts languishes unusable and unknown if its contents have not been listed and published.
