GREENSBORO URBAN LOOP With the completion of the 2-mile section of the Greensboro Urban Loop between Lawndale Drive and Elm Street, only the 3.5-mile section from Elm Street to U.S. 29 is needed to complete the entire 44-mile loop of interstate-grade highway around Greensboro. Planning for the Urban Loop began in 1969. This final northern section is scheduled for completion in 2022.

ORANGE COUNTY PROJECTS Major mobility and safety improvements are scheduled along the Durham-Chapel Hill-Hillsborough corridor of Interstate 40 in Orange County. NCDOT plans to widen I-40 to six lanes between I-85 and the Durham County line, with construction to begin in 2021. The N.C. 86 interchange will also be improved as part of the project.

WIDENING OF OLD N.C. 86 Several planned projects will change how people travel in southern Hillsborough. NCDOT plans to widen South Churton Street/Old N.C. 86 from I-40 north to the Eno River. The goal is to relieve congestion and travel delays and provide north-south pedestrian and bicycle connectivity. Construction is scheduled for 2028. Starting in 2028, NCDOT also will help fund construction of a Hillsborough train station on the North Carolina Railroad line, to give the area a new stop for the Carolinian and Piedmont passenger trains.
